Waiting on some parts I didn't know I needed - turns out the kit ECS vents (inboard of the vertical stabs) aren't right for the block of Super Hornet Airframe, so I've got some resin replacements from Steel Beach on the way.  Also turns out the kit drop tanks and pylons are also "not quite right" but a fellow regular at ARC has some spares from Revell on the way.

sirdrake- awesome work!

For the record I'm still in the build with my second submission - a 1.72 Gripen.  However things have slowed down as I've hit a wall with paint selection - the gray I have for the darker of the two shades is WAY too dark and I haven't found out which one I should go get....

...so if anyone happens to know what paint to use for the darker (upper surfaces) shade on a Gripen, I'm all ears!

Thanks for that, i will get attacking the plastic next week afetr telford (UK IPMS NATS) for the what if i am thinking of doing the Chipmunk with the canadian hood as a whif in Swedish airforce colours, probably cammo'd as i don't have a cammo Chipmunk in my built collection.

all the best.

Hi Greg, Sign - Welcome [#welcome]

I'm it's ok if you still like to join - but I don't know if you'll have much company. This GB has ben pretty quite recently... Not sure who's still around.

Tadaa! It's done. Finished with the Avro. The model is kind of hard to handle now, wiring everywhere (a total of 70 rigging / control wires, my personal record!)

Swedish Air Force, "Marinens Flygvaesede", 1924. Decals gave me a hard time, some of them (as you can see...) desintgrated under my hands. Or mybe that's just me?

Hope you like it.

Riggin:

I used 0.005" straight titanium wire. More difficult to handle than my usual 0.008", but a bit more in scale. Also, I avoided superglue - I developed an allergy gainst it, and one afternoon of rigging gives me two days of sneezing. So I used crystal glue instead.Works very nicely, because it gives you time to adjust the position of the wire - but it takes also much longer to harden, and when you have to rig 32 interplane wires, that is a factor.. One wire before breakfast, one wire after breakfast, one before dinner....

No some decals, and then the control wires and the landing gear.

Here's my second one, the Revell 1/72 Gripen.  Panel lines are OK but fairly overscale IMHO (though sometimes I can be heavy handed with the paint, so it might work out alright!!)  Fit is fairly decent, squadron green needed only around the intakes and some gap filling CA at the tail joint.

It will be in 2-tone gray and TwoBobs markings - found out that the gray is not my familiar USN combo of light ghost gray and dark ghost gray, so I've got some paint on the way from Squadron.  Hopefully here soon! Dabbling with the ordnance and such in the meantime.

Here's some paint on the Avro504K, and the upper wing attached. Now the fun part starts: rigging. And I do like rigging!

Here's the Viggen, all done!  Good learning experience for me using Alcad!
In retrospect, I'd have done something in the way of a seatbelt/harness set up, but I didn't figure the seat would have been so visible through a closed canopy!

Hi there,

I about to start the Airfix Avro 504K for the Airfix farewell group build. It comes with a set of swedish markings, which I wanted to use (something different for a a change). So I'd be glad to join - the build is still open ended?

Well guys, I confess the Viggen had to sit on the back burner for a bit while I wrestled with the 1/48 Prowler.

But in the last few days I've gotten to work again on it.  It was pointed out that the Hasegawa kit represents a prototype that evidently only wore NMF, so I was compelled to face a bit of a 20 year demon, as I've always been intimidated away from doing NMF!

But after doing some of most fastidious surface prep, I hit it with Alcad gray primer then aluminum.  For the record, I didn't really like the Alcad primer.  I found, in my experience at least, that it tended to pebble  out on the edge of the spray pattern or on nearby perpendicular surfaces.

After cleaning that up, I found the aluminum to be actually MORE forgiving and covered most of the primer gaffs.  Still, it's pretty obvious (at least I think) that it was my first hack at NMF - no contests to be won for this number! Clown [:o)]  And next time I will try another option for priming (a kind contributor over at ARC clued me in on a process he uses featuring PPG Automotive acrylic).

But, I'm definitely glad to have attempted the NMF and breaking the "stranglehold" it had on me - a whole new world of model finishing options now awaitsMischief [:-,]

I would very much like to get in on this group build. I am currently awaiting detail sets for my 1/48 Italeri Gripen.

I am currently busy building a large Russian aircraft. I've no idea how long that build will take. I really do want to get the Gripen done though. But first things first.

I hope I don't run out of time.

Thanks for the compliment!

yes, the chopper is around.  I got mine from Micro-Mark (http://www.micromark.com/).  You could probably order direct from Northwest Shortline here: http://www.nwsl.com/

I'm finally getting going.  Anyway, here's the heinous tailpipe as it stands in the kit.  Though this was originally meant to be purely out of the box, that flat wall of plastic with the body seam just had to go!
(sorry, the picture IS a bit washed out, but I'm sure you get the idea)

So, with the help of some pictures, I sketched out a rudimentary facsimile of the business end of the engine, then pieced it together with Evergreen styrene (the spokes cut in bulk thanks to my handy-dandy "Chopper" - something akin to a modelling-sized radial-arm saw (but with a razor blade) that can be set to cut pieces of a uniform length).  Not a perfect scale replica of the engine, but I feel an improvement.  Something that will at least suggest the presence of an engine, if anyone ever takes a notion to peek back there.
