Painted the MiG-29 MM neutral gray last night, and it turned out pretty good. The seams are adequate...not my best work, but not too shoddy, either. Once the blue goes on, Future is applied, decals are done and then dullcote is applied, I think it'll look pretty darn good.

No pics today, as I forgot to take my camera down to the workshop with me last night.

cj95, Micromesh pads are 2" square foam rubber with very fine grit sandpaper applied to both sides. They come in packs with grits ranging from 1500 to 12000 & sell for about $8 for a pack of 6. With care, they can be used to smooth out the rough spots in a paint job without going through to the underlying color. I get mine at the LHS, but they should be available at some of the better web stores.

Work on my Su-34 is progressing slowly, I am attempting to use the preshading method with this bird. I tried it once before and was less than impressed with my results. My airbrushing skills arent the greatest yet and my Testors compressor has a limited time that it can run before it overheats due to the voltage. Living in europe and trying to use 110v equipment through a transformer can be a pain in the butt. The voltage is stepped down from 220 to 110 but the Hz is still at 50 and that is the problem. Oh well - it all adds up to make me a more patient modeler in the end.

Looking forward to all the great red stars!!!

Due to a bad temper (Angry [:(!]) and the close availability of a power saw (Evil [}:)]) I will not be submitting a KP 1/72 scale MiG19. Instead it will be a Mig15 by Hobbycraft.

LOL, There's been more than one occasion when I've felt that way too, Joe. I thought I had lost the spinner from my La-7 to the carpet monster, and was about to chuck it onto the shelf and start something else instead. I found it yesterday, after a week or so missing, underneath a tool box that I swear has not moved in months. The good news is, I can probably start painting it now.

Good luck with the HC Mig-15.

I figured today I could show "in progress" pictures of my cleaning, organizing and setting up the hobby room in my new house - but it's such a mess I'd be too embarassed. Guess I'll have to wait till I start BUILDING something before I post anything!! Laugh [(-D]

OK, I have decided to make a minor change in the rules. Helicopters will now be allowed into the group build. I hope no one minds this change. let me know if you do mind.

As far as my build I am leaning towards a mig-27 now. What do you guys say? mig-27 or su-27?

YAY!!
After some real frustrating moments with cheap paint, and poorly fitting gear bays my MiG-19 is finished.

While my version isnt technically Russian, it DOES have Red Stars on it so neeners!Tongue [:P]

The only change is I may go back and reposition the ordinance as it looks a bit crooked to me.

My other project, the MiG-25 is going slowly but when I get further along I'll post more pics.

I'll be starting my Trumpeter MiG-21Monday when I get settled into my room at Sheppard AFB for 2 weeks. I won't be able to post any pix until I get back home since my laptop is FUBAR. Talk to you guys in a couple of weeks.

Interesting paint work on the Mig-19. The national markings are Chinese, rather than Russian.

Looks good cj95, but the ordinance does look a bit out of kilter.

Can some of you Russian A/C fans help me with some coloration? I am doing a Yak-7 for the OOB GB (sorry… I committed it to that one before I saw this one) and a have question. What color was used for interiors like wheel wells, inside of LG covers and the LG struts? Also, I am using the kits decals, ICM, and they say the camo is black and green. I can’t find any color reference and given other “inconsistencies” with the kit I am wondering about the black. Is that correct or a typo?

Marc, Interior colors varied, but a grey similar to RLM 02 is pretty close. The Black is not a typo. Many were painted in a disruptive camo scheme of Top Side Green & Black. War time Russia was woefully short of materials, but they had a large supply of paint from their tractor factories. The Black was actually paint intended for tractors.

Marc, It's called research Smile [:)]. I've been modeling for many years & have read many books & articles on WWII Aircraft. Today you can most of what you need on the Net, but I still buy books on subjects that interest me.

Ok, i'm in! I got a Mig-15. It's a simple kit. Now, i've just painted it silver

Don't criticize: It's late, my airbrush just spilled all over the floor, and my clothes smell like laquer thinner. and as I type, i'm leaving silver fingerprints on the keys. an this is my first (yes, FIRST...count em...1) attempt at airbrushing. In my current state of sleep-deprived delirium, It LOOKS EXCELLENT!!!!!!!
It's late and i don't feel like doing any more. I want to make this a North Korean bird, but for the purpose of this build I will alter my wishes slightly.

OK, new idea: I built this one, but don't put the decals on yet. If i get another kit, I'll build that. If not, i'll find some red stars (the decals for this kit didn't come with any) and slap em on.

Oh, and don't tell me that it doesn't have a cockpit...I KNOW, DAMNIT, I KNOW!!

Seems you missed a few spots... well first attempt as you, say first attempt... you might consider a second coat.... (and cleaning up that fuselage seam line Smile [:)])

not bad for first crack with an airbrush, but I do agree with Tankmaster that another coat would really help even things out for you!

Marc,

Just a quick follow-up on the camo for your Yak, the black they used was a semi-opaque looking color, not just a flat black, if that makes sense. I like to use MM acryl Nato tri black for this color.

Check out this site for some great info on WWII Soviet a/c:

Sergei, Not too bad for your first try. Airbrushing takes a lot of practice & experimenting to find what works best for you. Should clean up the seams before you paint though.

Daniel- Guess what I found when I did a Google of “wii russian fighter camouflage colors” it brought to the IPMS Stockholm site and it says about black, “Used together with "Tractor" Bright Green in the oft-publicized "tractor" scheme. 1941-1943.”

Lt. Zogg- I got some Humbrol Coal Black to try… 1st ever time trying Humbrol. I did a quick brush of that next to MM flat black. That Humbrol took about 5 times as long to dry and when the MM was Futured they were both equally shiny and black. I am going to play around with a bit of white, a drop of blue maybe and white/grey pastels.

You kidding? IT's perfect! Perfect!!Propeller [8-]Sigh [sigh]Yuck [yuck]
Ok, so it sucks a little. and I was too lazy to sand those huge things on top down. I did get it all with the paint though, I just got some areas more than i got others. It was kinda hard to see on a light gray surface.
Now, i've painted the nose and black stripes on the wings:

Currently, i've just attached the missile struts and landing gear. Next: Landing gear flaps and Droptanks.

Advice: should I put the missiles (rockets, actually) on, or not? Also, should I put rocket assisted takeoff pods on the fuselage? The kit comes with them. They're a little ugly (not helped at all by my psit job), but It might look wierd if I forget them.

Carl,

If I may make a suggestion; consider washing your hands or wearing some type of soft glove when handling a BMF/Silver finished bird. I thought I saw some finger prints on the right wing. It has been eons since I did a BMF and in fact thats due to my frustration level with it. I actually stopped doing any BMF, until this Group Build that is. So keep soldiering on (KBO!)

In regards to the tanks etc. make it how you want it...from photos I have seen of flight lines you can see a wide variety of aircraft in differing states of readiness...biggest thing is to have some fun!

Sergei,
not bad for your first airbrushing attempt. My personal practice is to be able to see straight when i airbrush, and perhaps you should spray a light coat of a primer, in this instance white, before the silver. The primer should help you see where you have missed on the first go round. Keep up the work and before you know it you'll have perfected the daunting task of WWII german mottle camo!!!

Love the classic lines of the mig 15 and 19!!!!
