Finished Pics
Posted by Jabbe on Monday, July 10, 2006 2:00 PM

Hi all,

I finally finished my second bird. It's the Revell 1/72 model. Second one I've built, I really like the kit. I'm a little upset though, cause I broke the front windscreen while masking it off for painting. I'm happy with how my first Alclad II paintjob came out, but I think next time I'll put in a little more time. In fact, I think my modeling is at the pint where I need to take more time with each and every part. Anyhow, here are the pics:

I'm sure you'll notice there is no tailwheel. It was a casuality of the Carpet Monster. Also, the guns will get painted black next time I've got the black paint out.

I've got this individual IP decal thing down pat.  This Waldron Punch set is perfect!  And it's so easy to then put the decals on.  I will never put on an entire instrument decal again, it will always be individual instruments.  For those of you that have been afraid to try this, it's way easier than you think.  Smile [:)]

Yup Scott that is about the way to do it.  Get your Optivisor out... yer gonna need itWink [;)]  I have done it that way and also setting the decal in a drop of water on the my trusty decal cuttling piece of glass and "floating" it on to the end of a number 00000000000000000000 brush and getting it into a tiny drop that i put in the dial on the IP.  After every thing dries, a drop of Krystal Klear and it's done.

Good question.  I was just discussing that very subject with my wife.  I'm not sure how I'm going to handle it.  I am thinking about putting a drop of water where the instrument is supposed to go, then carefully setting the instrument in the water, after it loosens up taking two toothpics and gently try to seperate the two with the instrument hopefully staying in the water drop.  Then just wick the water away with a paper towel.  Anyone else ever try that?

After a bit of a hiatus from this project, I'm back working on my P-47.  I think I've figured out how to use this punch and die set properly.  I'm beginning the process of attempting to install each individual instrument decal.  Man these instruments are tiny!

Hey, thanks anyways, guys! I guess I'll just order one from Tamiya, I just thought I'd check here first. Now, let's just see if I can get it before the build ends, that's the only thing I have left to finish.

Sorry Geoff, I have two pristine bubble top canopies (don't ask, I kept losing them and having to order more..  then one day I found them all) but not a razorback..

glad to hear you're better, at least on paper...

oh and I looked at the kit online and it looks pretty accurate, even the hanger deck was done well, I could remember the whole setup in my mind when I saw the plans...

Looks good Tom, glad to see you got it done.

Go back to work tomorrow, first time since 4-12, doc thinks I'm a little better, still need to keep working on my BP. Have seen that post(re: kinnda sad) for awhile, will go check it out. Hope they did a good job modeling her, especially for that price. Great wife you have there, a diffanate(sp) keeper.

oh yeah here's a preliminary shot of mine until I can get to that school this week... I cut the students out, then thought better of it, and since I didn't have Nadia's (the teacher) permission to post her pic on the web so cut her out too:

about the only difference from the US P-47's you can see in this small shot is the Mexican AF symbol on the starboard wing and the colors of the Mexican flag on the rudder instead of the Red White and Blue...

(edit - it's just tacked to that wood base with clear parts glue so it didn't get knocked around on the trip.  I have a really nice set of decals for second P-47 that I will do at the end of summer for the same class (different set of kids) and I will stain the base and put grass/runway etc on it and permanently mount that plane...)

John - looking forward to it!  Glad you are nearing the finish line!!!  Off topic, but did you see they came out with a 1/350 USS Guam LPH-9?  (re: "Kind of sad tonight" post from the ship forum waaaayyyy back when?)  it's in resin and costs $495 dollars but the wife ok'd it.. I think I'll need a bigger desk first...

Check on pages 11 and 21 of this GB.. there are two different takes on how to apply it... both of them are right.

You can either paint the body gloss black enamel or lacquer then shoot the alclad on or shoot future on till mirror glossy and put the Alclad on... either works just as well from the pics I've seen here.  I go the future route and have no problems... the biggest trick is to only apply light coats of Alclad until covered.  If you try to put it on too heavy you'll get rough spots and such.  As you apply each coat you'll still see unevenness in the paint but by the thrid or fourth coat it will be a nice even sheen.

Good luck!!!

DISASTER STRIKES!

Ok, so maybe it was only a minor catastrophy. Last night I got the final paint / weathering done and most of the final assembly stuff, only thing left is the canopy (Future is curing as we speak) and the antenna. I had just put on the fuel tank and wouldn't you know it, I DROPPED HER FROM 3FT UP!!! Censored [censored]Sad [:(]Angry [:(!] I almost cried. Luckily, I escaped with only the right side gear strut, rocket pod, bomb, and tail wheel breaking off (all rather cleanly I might add). Oh, and a little tiny scratch. So, after I got everything re-attached, I can say I'm back to being 99% done...Pics soon.

Joshua - I think you just forgot me...  Disapprove [V]  haha it's ok, I didn't notice anyway...

Oh!!! Good news!  I went to the school where I gave the airplane to that class, and there it was on top of a high shelf.  I'm bringing my camera tomorrow and try to get some shots of it... till then!

Geoff I couldn't agree more.  With the last Tamiya T-Bolt that I built, the only kit decals that I used were the stars and bars around the vents on the side of the fuselage.

Cheers

Got the D-day stripes done Yeah!! [yeah] and most of the decals are on. I was planning on finishing this week, but I have to take a trip to Texas for work, so I guess it'll have to wait. Pics soon...

By the way, for anyone that hasn't used AeroMaster decals, they're awsome! I used both the kit decals (Tamiya) and the AeroMaster on this build, and I think the AeroMaster laid down better than the Tamiya ones. My 2 cents [2c]

Wow, it has been quite some time since I have checked in here too. Things are looking great. Lots of good progress and builds going on. I'll try to be a little more consistent.

Grandadjohn, I have a site of fonts in my favorites at work. I'll see if I can find it through a search, otherwise if I can't locate it and nobody posts one sooner, I try to post a link on Monday.

Hope all is well with everyone.

Long time no see guys! While I was at the beach, I took a little trip to see the USS North Carolina. That was a cool experience, and I'm glad I was able to make it.

tho9900: you sure the girls didn't just find you cute? I think we're all looking forward to seeing finished pics. Although, feel free to supply us with nude pics (of the airplane, not of you) :-p

ModelNerd: That's an excellent looking build! The figure really adds to the size of the jug. Here's your badge: (be sure to save it and host it on your own site)

gedenke: That's a nice NMF job. Keep us posted!

P.S. ModelNerd and tho9900, did you guys change your names when the forums changed over, or did I just fail to add you guys onto the build list (seen in the very first post)?
