I have purposefully avoided D-Day A/C for awhile because of that... too much masking.. the next one I do,  I am going to make a 1/48 mop and do it like the guys in the field did in 1945!!!  Wink [;)]

Ok, Alclad is finished, and I did the anti-glare panel last night. I had to do a little "spot fix", which was relatively easy by carefully sanding the spot, re-Futuring, and then re-applying Alclad. Also finished are the landing gear/doors along with all the final assemly stuff (cannons, antenna, pitot, armament, etc.). Now I have to tackle the d-day stripes Dead [xx(]...ugh!

Ok, now that we have ridden ourselves of students for the summer I can get started on my interpetation of a P-47.  It seems that other things have gotten in the way of me starting this one.

Darren - I do have a pic of the teacher and a few students looking at it, maybe I can suitably enlarge it so something can be seen of it at least...

Oh... Floquil Silver did a mighty fine job on the NMF.. I might consider trying it on another model to make sure but it looks nicely metallic and is a lot less fuss than Alclad.. I'm glad I went out looking at reviews of P-47's when I started the second one....(where I learned of the Floquil). if it wouldn't have been for the lacquer thinner needed to clean the airbrush for Alclad, I would have been done with this a long time ago!  Mineral spirits wouldn't have wrecked it like that...

Geoff rather than pre-shading when using a NMF you could maybe think of priming the airframe wings, flaps, panels etc with different materials.  For instance shoot flat acrylic primer over some panels and the flaps (gloss over the rest) and then when you apply the Alclad it comes out a different shade. Just my My 2 cents [2c].

Tom I'm glad the kids liked the T-Bolt after all the work you put in it, well some of them at least.  It's a darn pity you didn't manage to get any photos though, I was looking forward to seeing the kit finished.

MN Congrats on a fine looking build, nice job Thumbs Up [tup]

Cheers

Nice work MN!

As for mine, I tried preshading for the first time last night, and I think it turned out alright. I painted the flaps solid black in hopes that it will give a slightly darker shade than the rest of the plane when I shoot the Alclad. A coat of Future goes on tonight.

Don't I know the feeling... I was under a deadline as tomorrow is the last day of school... so I wanted to present it today as tomorrow is a half day for students... I was up late last night doing all I could and BAM!!!  It hit me about 3pm I hadn't taken pics for here... it wasn't perfect but it was good given the speed I was having to model at to get it to them before school closed...

Ironically they were more impressed with how I "invisibly" secured it to a wood base than the actual model or history it represented itself... Kids!!!!!  Wink [;)]

Well gang I finished my P-47... problem?  I went and delivered it to the classroom for new immigrants I was going to give it to, and???  I forgot to take pics first!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Banged Head [banghead]

I'll try to stop by tomorrow and get some pics hopefully.. it is the last day of school so I am not sure.. The kids did like it though.. ironically there was a crowd of about 14 girls around it asking a lot of relevant questions about what did it take to get all the little pieces in the cockpit, was this what the 201st flew in WWII, even relevant historical questions about the unit and their duties.. the boys????  sitting in their chairs twiddling their thumbs... just odd ...

...wings, h. stabs, and bomb/tank racks are on, flaps are assembled, working on the landing gear tonight. Getting close to starting the finish painting. I might mention that this kit has required zero putty Cool [8D]. More later...

Goeff - I forgot to add... with the future, should you get a spot you need to touch up... just refuture on top of it, let cure and spray again.. you won't notice it.  This works especially well anywhere Alclad goes on too thick in one pass.  It will create a dark spot in the finish that won't go away no matter how many coats you put over it or how long you let it cure before another coat.  future provides the surface to get it back one color again..

Geoff - I had similar results when using the black krylon... obviously it works based on the pics at Swanny's site, I have never mastered it though... I found just plain old future works best for the non-shiny types of Alclad... I did a test on a Do335 I was working on recently and painted one half of the cowl with just future, the other half had a black acrylic base with future on top.  The non black side won hands down.  It had a better sheen and actually shone brighter than the black side.

On a side note I have been reading a lot about Floquils "Old Silver" which is what I bought for my 201'st esquadron P-47 pt. 2...  (after I messed up the other with lacquer thinner)  I am finding it gives results close to Alclad with half the mess.. no primer, goes down flat and dries in a minute or so.. nice sheen and only slightly less "metallic" looking than Alclad.. I might have found my "happy medium" as far as NMF's go.. at least for now.  I will post a pic tonight so you can see it... oh yeah and masking does not seem to affect it...

Ok, a little update anlong with a question. Got the fuse halves and the the engine cowl together last night.

Now for the question: I shot the area behind the cockpit with Alclad II Aluminum and to tell the truth, it didn't live up to it's reputation. I first primed it with gloss black (decanted Krylon) let it cure about a day and then misted on a couple coats of Alclad, and it looks like...well, plain old silver paint. Did I do something wrong or is this what I can expect out my $8 bottle of "miracle NMF paint". Judging by the rave reviews of I've read of Alclad II, I guess I had high hopes. I'll keep trying.

Tom, you may already know this, but the squadrons of the 42nd BG are the 69th, 70th, 75th, 100th, and 390th.

Darren - he was with the 13th Army Air Force, 42nd Bomb Group.  I haven't narrowed it down to a squadron yet, but once I do have that I will have a picture of a plane.  Evidently inthe S. Pacific the same crew hardly ever flew the same plane due to the number of raids going on.  In fact crews really weren't always the same.. as if you were up to it, as soon as you got back from a mission you could volunteer for another the same day, on a different plane and get your 'discharge' points faster and be home...  It's been really interesting researching this..

As far as the kit I am finishing up sanding the putty as we type, and will be ready for exterior paint tomorrow.  On this one I am trying Floquil Old Silver as the NMF.  I saw it in several kit reviews for NMF planes and it looked pretty good.  If it looks good enough I might switch to it, I'll have to see...

Geoff I just wanted to say thanks again for the seat, it arrived today and was promptly put in the paint shop so that it can catch up to the rest of the cockpit.

Tom what unit was your uncle with? I have some decent references on Pacific B-25s I can always try and dig up something for you.

Also, I looking forward to see some more photos of this kit that I have heard so much about.

Cheers

Geoff - that cockpit looks sharp!  I do love those Tamiya Bubbletops.. a nice build for its intracasies...  And I think you'll love the Alclad!!

Progress on my end is very slow.  I spent the last 72 hours (almost straight, even doing it at work) researching info on my uncle who was a B-25 gunner in the S. Pacific.. but tonight I got the wings on and ready to put the tail on in a bit... I might wait and stop there for the night as I am a bit exhausted from all the looking at the monitor...  if I can pick up the rate at which I am building I should be near completion by the coming weekend if not finished...

That's an excellent looking office gedenke!

All my modeling stuff is packed away in storage (moving home over the summer), and I'm headed to the beach for a week. Feel sorry for me, I won't be doing any modeling :-p

I hope everyone's builds go well while I'm gone. See you guys in a week!
