I gave up on using very much PE stuff, my eyes and figures just don't co-operate with me much anymore

John, I feel your pain with the photo etch, that stuff drives me nuts. I'm actually on the final approach with my build. Unfortunately, I can't post any pics till I get back home.

Cheers,

Jerry

I'm the same way with the PE. In theory it is all great, but it is so hard to cut / attach / etc. without glue problems, pieces flying, or my frustration setting in. I usually end up more or less just using the seatbelts and instrument panels.

I'm a little embarrassed to say this, but I am almost done with my pre-GB build. I had hoped to have it completed before the new year, so I could jump right in to the actual build, but it is such a nice kit, I seem to be daudling to try to get every thing right. Hope to have it done and pictures posted by the end of the week, so the 'real deal' can start.

Hope all is well.

KINGTHAD: There's plenty of room and time. Welcome to the build. What kit will you be building?

grandadjohn: Your office is comming along well. I'm with you though, I don't invest much time into my cockpits. In 1/72 scale, if you can even see what color the cockpit is through the clear plastic, then you're doing good.

dragonfly and gwaihir: You guys win the award for jumping in and getting started. No, there is no prize, but at least you get to post pics of your finished builds before everyone else.

I know I said that the badge would be ready before school started, and boy did I lie. I haven't had much time to put torwards the build, but I did make 2 badges. Anyone else can submit a badge, I won't be offended. Let's have a vote, and we'll use the most popular badge. The only stipulation behind the badge is you must finish a P-47 (and post pics if you have the capability).

The second one dosn't say P-47, but I can slip that in if everyone likes it. Furthermore, I can omit the "Nice Jugs!" if it's not acceptable in the forum. Tell me what you think guys.

I like the pic in the 2nd one but the nice jugs may not be appropriate... but there are "3" in the pics so.. maybe...Evil [}:)]

And while I have not started it yet... everything is in the box... kit, PE details, AM decals... all ready to go.  Getting close on the my 1/24 190D-9 for the BOG GB... close as in there is an end in sight.

Jabbe,
I wish I could get an award for jumping in and getting started, but the one that I am almost done with is a "practice" build. When you did one before the build started, I was inspired, thinking that it would be a great way to try out some weathering, painting techniques, etc. However, the kit I chose to practice on (Tamiya 1/72) is so incredible, that I ended up really taking my time on it and tried to 'build it up right.' So, I will be done, but I started early on this one, so it is only for fun and enjoyment :)

As for the badges, purely by the look of the plane, I like the first one a little better, but both are great and would be fine badges!

Well guys, I'm not going to appologize for finishing early, but I've had alot of spare time out on the road and was able to push thru this build fairly quickly. It was a challenge with just the tools I thought I'd need, but fortunately there was a hobby shop nearby. I was able to get one pic into my friends laptop that I've posted, but I have to wait till I get home to show you the rest. I can't get the pics out of my camera without a special cable that's connected to my pc back home.

Anyhoo....this is the Hase, 1/48 kit. I used a resin CP and wheel wells. Also, alot of PE, all Tamiya paints, and kit decals. So here's what I guess I'll call, for now, a teaser. btw, this is a checker tail.

Looks great Jerry! I really like the slight variation in the OD color. It really adds a nice touch! I can't wait to see the rest of the pictures.

I'll be back home the first week of Feb. I took several photos of the CP and engine before they were installed. Those pics are stored in the internal memory in my camera. I now have purchased an SD card that I can transfer pics to just about anything. I don't want to show more finished pics without the early shots. Kinda like the cart before the horse. I'm looking forward to seeing everyones work.

Cheers,

Jerry

Jerry, your Razorback looks superb! Your OD finish is excellent, can't wait to see more. As for me, I now have the wings glued together after spending a couple of hours finishing the PE bits. Personally, I now think all the extra work is not worthwhile as once painted, it does'nt look much. Still, I'll carry on, the experience will do me good!

Darren, I'm sorry to hear that about the pe. I often feel that way - spend a lot of time on some little detail and then realize no one will ever notice or care. I'm sure it looks great though and please remind us about it when you post pics so we can admire it :-)

Well, I finished my 'practice' build and posted pictures. Now I can move on to the real thing. Tamiya 1/48 razorback, with lots of extras. I'm really excited and figure it will probably take me, well, forever to finish, but it's going to be great fun. I'm glad I can finally really join the group :-)

Oh by the way if you are interested (shameless plug), my practice build is posted here: http://www.finescale.com/FSM/CS/forums/575605/ShowPost.aspx

Hope all is well. Leon

Guys, don't forget to tell me your preference for the badges. So far I only have 2 votes.

Wow, I think that makes the first time one of my builds has "inspired" anyone.

Dragonfly: You're right when you say it's a "teaser" pic. Judging from what we can see, it looks excellent. What color red is that on the cowl? I airbrushed a red cowl on my last T-bolt, but the color was way off.

I finished sanding down the Academy Razorback this evening, and I also glued the wings on the RM bubbletop. The razorback will get a nice OD/Grey coat, while the bubbletop has 3 bottles of AlcladII waiting for it.

Thanks Marc. I tried to get a shot of the wheel wells. I should have done it before installation. The Aires set really is an improvement, although you can't see much here. Sorry for the over exposure.

Also, forgive me. I couldn't resist posting another finished pic. I took the model outside to take advantage of the natural light. It was very windy, and fifteen seconds after this photo was taken, she went airborne. That's right...off the table and three feet down to solid concrete. Fortunately, the damage wasn't too bad. Lost a bomb and starboard stabilizer and a few scratches.  I should have known better when I could actually see the prop spinning when looking thru the view finder of the camera. Anyhoo...I've preformed suceesfull damge control. It could have been much worse. Very scary!!!

Hi Everyone,

I have put the wings on my Razor back an noticed a big mistake:( Where I have superglued the wheel well wires, I can see globs of solid superglue. Any ideas on how to take care of this without ruining the detail?
Apart from that err on my part, every else looks good so far, I'll be putting some paint down tonight, starting with a light colour coat. After this dark mottle and final colour coats will follow. I am copying this technique from the osprey book. I hope it works for me!

Joshua, I like the first GB badge with the single aircraft, it just appeals to me.

Leon, just saw your finished T-bolt in the Air forum-absolutely superb! A real masterpiece, I wish I could do that!

Jerry, thanks for the pics for your build, another masterpiece for sure. Sorry to hear her "maiden" flight did'nt go as expected! I'm glad you did'nt suffer too much damage.
I must say the standard of these builds is quite high, I'd love to be able to produce a model like that. I hope you guys give me lots of pointers along the way.

Regards,

Darren.

Jerry, Wow, those wheel wells look great! Very nice. I'm glad your damage wasn't too bad and you were able to fix it. I'm looking forward to seeing the rest when you post them, because all that we have seen so far look excellent.

Darren, I'm not sure how it would work, but they do make superglue debonder or remover (or something like that) I wonder if you put a little on a q-tip and almost used a dry brushing technique on the 'globs' if it would remove some but not all. I'm not sure, and I would definately practice first, I don't know if it would work / remove paint / or what other negative effects it might have. Another possibility (?) would be to use a needle file and try to sand away some? I'm just thinking outloud and am curious to see what others come up with. I wish you the best of luck on it and hope it turns out. BTW good luck with the mottling. I'm curious to see how it comes out (hopefully as well as in the book Smile [:)])

Darren, sometimes, because of the brittle nature of CA glue, you can get it to pop off the un-wanted areas in one piece. I've actually done that a couple of times. I carefully took a hobby blade to the blob and it scraped right off right down to the bare plastic. Worth a try. Good luck.

I also tried the mottling paint technique, and it seemed to work well. I only wished I wouldn't have second guess myself and gone with a little more contrast, cause the end result was very subtle. Before the clear coat, I thought it looked overdone so I toned it down with another shot of the thinned base color. Then after a gloss clear coat, it almost disappeared. I now wish I would have left it alone and stayed with the original results. The effect will definately diminish after a clear coat. Something to keep in mind.

Thanks Jerry,

I sprayed the mottle on a couple of hours ago and then sprayed the OD colour on top of that. The effect is there, but I can bearly see it. I'm thinking of doing the mottling with a darker colour to get the desired effect.

I'll try taking the CA glue out when I'm done painting, thanks for the good advice.

Hi everyone,

I was'nt happy with the paint job I did yesterday so I put a darker mottle colour on the model followed by a thinner OD colour. The effect is better than before, the darker shade showing through.
Here's a pic, the lighting does'nt pick up the effect very well, but if you look closely you can make it out. Let me know what you think,

Darren.

Thanks Marc,

this technique is new to me so its nice to know that its looks OK! I now need to do the same process on the grey undersides and then start the dreaded (well, I'm dreading them...) invasion stripes.

See you later,

Darren.

Darren – I just noticed your jug is sitting in front of a Helldiver box.  I have the Accurate Min. Helldiver just a couple of builds down the list and I think I read or was told that it is a re-tool of the Monogram kit.  How is the canopy in you kit?  The one with the Am kit is as close to unusable as a canopy can getAngry [:(!]  Amazing how that could have even ended up in the box of such a nice kit... looking as bad as it does.

Marc,

I have two versions of the monogram kit, the one in the picture is the horrid first issue which I cannot find anything good to say about. The other one is the new tool with etched brass and lots of details, i.e. ressessed lines, good cockpit. I looked at the canopy on this one and it seems fine to me. The AM is a re-box of the later kit, what is wrong with your canopy? If its a production fault, they need to know about it-especially for the price they are charging for those things.

Darren.
