Gundam GB 2005 - To March 1, 2006

Welcome to the first ever Gundam Group Build here on the FineScale Modeler Magazine forum.

Subject: Gundam Model Kits -- Any series, scale, medium & grade. Including SD kits, Resin kits, and anything else "Gundam."

Start Date: October 15, 2005 (late entries are acceptable as well)

End Date: March 1, 2006

As different scales and grade are allowed, some people may complete
a much simpler model early in the group build. Those who do are
encouraged to build another if they are so inclined. So if you want to
slap together a simple non-grade 1/144 to see what this Gundam thing is
all about and then want to do a more intense kit, feel free!

If you've ever wanted to give building a giant robot model a try,
this would be a great opportunity. As there are so many different
grades and scales available, ranging from simple snap togethers to
complex kits with thousands of pieces, there's something for every
skill level.

I don't have any problem with that. The point of a group build is to share ideas and get a kit done alongside other people doing similar things. Sounds like it would fit to me.

As for the start date, it's just to give people some time to finish off a project, clear their workspace or go shopping for a kit. If you start a little early, it's not like one of us is going to send the Gundam Group Build Police to confiscate your model and break your fingers Big Smile [:D]

COOL! I'm in!

I've never done a Group Build so this should be fun. The hardest part for me is picking which kit to build. I've literally got a closet full of Gundam kits ranging from 1/144 to Master Grade to Perfect Grade. I've also ordered a crate of paints and supplies that should be here just after the build starts. I should know by then what I'll build first.

I just finished a Master Grade RX 78 GP-01. No paint, just different marker types for panel lines and some coloring to test out different techniques. I may strip it down again and paint it at a later date.

did u putty those seams up for the GP01? Only kits so far from just looking at the parts that doesn't need much putty will be the rx79 ground type (last time i looked at master grade gundams was 3 years ago...) My master grade MkII ended up getting half melted on the arm pieces thanx to my trial run to sand the putty with a dremel.... terrible idea.

hehe. but come on, it's Mk-II!!!! aside from Zeta Gundam this is my favourite one. I mean there are cooler and higher powered gundams out there, but being the first multi-purpose one to NOT to have the whole combination between core fighter and crap stuff, it was just awesome of a design. Well there is also the NT1 Alex and GP03 Stamen with that 360 degree view cockpit, but they didn't really go through a lot of combat. MkII was combat proven till the end of zeta series. Included with it there are also its wave rider for earth atmosphere combat/re-entry, the mega beam canon rider thing, and the whole Super Gundam outfit with the battleship class canon n missile pods. It is not as ridiculous as those feather armored wing zero, sword silouette impulse, or any of the close combat weaon equipted ones in Gundam Wing. Let's not even mention the whole G Gundam thing... sheesh.

hehe, enough bashing for the series other than universal century stuff. i really don't mean them since i thought they were cool while watching them. but the point is that.... MK-II is something that defines the whole gundam thing for me, so i will be using exposy putty to repair the wounds and finish it up.

Haha, I was talking in a battlefield practicality sense. Truth be told, I LOVE wing zero in endless waltz. The design was bold and just simply cool. Same goes for the D.Hell custom. I hated the 1/144 HG model kit for it though. Crap of a kit.

ok, I'm not at all familiar with the cartoons, but I do like the models, so I've accumulated 4 or 5 over the years but never finished them.

I'm in with the 1/144th Mobile Suit Gouf Flight Type MS-07H8 by Bandai, or at least I think that's what its called?! I started it years ago and never got around to finishing it. I can already see mistakes I've made before, with uneven filling of seams and what not. but this will give me incentive to finish this and some of the others as well.

Oct 15 to March 1, 2006 is actually about four and a half months. Do you think that's too short or too long?

Nice to see another simple 1/144 being done. Are you planning on getting it done quickly, converting it, spending a lot of time finishing and painting it? Think you'll have time for a second before March 1? I'm contemplating either heavily converting mine (make the leg joints work for starters) or just getting it done fairly quickly and getting on to my HG Zaku.

It should go together pretty quickly but I do want to take my time to get a nice finish. If I make good progess then I'll also do the Blue fram and put them in a duel diorama.

Here's a site with some amazing work with tips, how to's and links to other sites with more amazing work. This was my single biggest influence in 'Going Gundam'.

If gundamstoreandmore.com sold internationally I'd order all my stuff from them. However, they only ship within the US. I find I have a pretty decent selection being on the west coast of Canada though. So far I've been able to find every kit I've gone out to find. I pay a bit more though than if I could order 5 kits at a time from gundamstoreandmore.com

@Aurora-7 - Awesome link! Thanks for sharing it.

I'm going to definitely be spending a lot of time getting the surface nice. My main decision to make is whether or not I want to cut and rebuild the knees to make them posable and if I want to stick with the Duel's colours or come up with my own scheme (I'll be airbrushing it either way). If I do stick with the colours, I may want to get a Strike and have a Kira vs. Yzak diorama.

Hey you all. I'm interested in this group build but I don't want to build a Gundam figure. I was thinking one of the big ships instead. If there are any good drawings/diagrams out there a paper model might be a good choice for me. Does anyone know of any such drawings out there or a list of the ships that there are kits out for already?

There are a few ship kits available. The cream of the crop are the Banda EX kits. They have crisp detail and the parts fit well.

Alright, Nathaniel, I'm giving into an impulse here but I'm going to change my build from the 1/144 Gundam Astray to the 1/100 RX-178(G) - the ground type Gundam form the 08th MS Team series (my fav, too). I just ordered a 1/100 hover truck model from the Starship Modeler web site - just saw it about 10 minutes ago and my just got to excited. Plus my son just bought the DVD to the series so guess what I saw last night. Propeller [8-]

Aurora-7, I updated the participants list.

That's a pretty cool kit. It'll be perfect for the hover tank/truck that is the recon part of the 08th MS Team.

While I love the 08th MS Team cartoons, my new favorite is SEED & SEED Destiny. Both excellent series where some of the beloved designs of the Universal Century Zeon forces are actually decent fighters. In SEED Destiny, the Zakus and Goufs are the top of the line mass production units of ZAFT. It's great to see Zakus and Goufs kick but instead of just being shredded all the time. The only thing that's bad is that none of the underwater mobile suits are anywhere nearly as cool as the Gogg and the Z'Gok. Those things are amazing:

Hey Aurora-7,

I think 08th Team is my fave Gundam anime also. I'm very tempted to get that hover truck, but I'd like to see a revew of the kit with better photos. You can't tell what you're really getting from that ad.
