I'm off to a slow start. My 7 year old daughter wants to help so that adds considerable time to the process. I clip a few pieces of the tree and then I let her assemble them with my guidence -it's tough trying to get her to stop guessing how they go together and use the pictures on the instructions.

Last night after getting a little to agressive with my kit (she wanted to complete it before her bed time) I got an old Gundam F-91 (the Dahgi Iris) kit from the basement I had gotten form my son 8 years ago. She was ecstatic, especially when she found out the pilot was a girl (Anna Marie Bourget). The fact many Mobil Suite pilots from various series were women definetly grabs her interest in making these kits.

We went from working on the legs of the kit to printing out a line drawing of Bourget from the internet so she could color it (It was sheer luck I found one the first time I looked up 'Anna Marie Bourget' in Google).

I better wait try to build my stuff until after her bed time.

Can I switch to 1/144 Freedom? I realized the red poly caps on the Astray aren't going to look good unless it's well, red -__- Why couldn't they be grey??......

No problem. I'll make the change in the participant's list. How many polycaps are we talking about? What about using the red ones from the Astray in places where they'll be almost completely covered and the grey ones from the Freedom where they might be exposed? If they're similar to the point of being interchangable, you might be able to get by with the red caps.

I actually have this model somewhere, I need to dig it out and build it!

I've been wanting to do the Freedom as well...

And the Freedom would look just as awkward with the red caps :p

Wow. When kids get determined to get something done, they get it done! That is a really cool model too. Do you think she could handle colouring in the panel lines with a marker? Or is your little modeler ready for painting yet? I remember making a big sticky mess out of an F4 Phantom when I was 7. I refused to wait to let the paint dry before I went on to the next colour-- it was great!

Aurora-7 tell your daughter great work on her Dahgi Iris. She gets the official "smile with hand sticking out of ear award" for that Smile [:)]Thumbs Up [tup]

Still waiting for my kits, should be here soon but I'm psyched now that I seen some stuff happening.

Blah, I really need a CLEAN lineart to do what I want, but I guess this will do. Here's an idea of what I was thinking the "Custom" Wing Zero Custom would look like in an alternate scheme:

I really like that colour scheme. I'm also in the minority of Gundam fans as well-- I think the wing designs are some of the best.

Yeah, the other Wing designs I want to get are the Tallgeese III, Serpent Custom and HeavyArms Custom. Wendy (My beloved wife) has the Sandrock Custom waiting on her. No rush... whenever she gets to it. If I don't get to it first. LOL

She does want to paint it. I think the reason she has more patience with this than her brother is because she has always been into more craft oriented things like coloring with pens, markers, water colors and cutting things out of construction paper and gluing things togehter.. She likes art projects so she can sit at a table and work on more relativelty tedious projects - And she says she wants to enter in the next model show I go to.

As for Daddy's project, I've got the arm assemblies together and just started on the legs. I'll put the hole thing together as a snap together first, post an image and then pull it appart for seam filling, painting and post those images as I go.

my kit choices have narrowed down to 2:
Strike Dagger or Mobile Suit GuAIZ, both in 1/144...
since this is my first try at this Gundam thing,, i'm not
sure exactly what i'm in for, but maybe i can manage 2
do them both ?
congrats 2 ur daughter, Aurora-7 !
first one finished & a nice looking model, too !

HGUC kits. Good fitment. The colors are great. Price are pretty low. Less parts. Pretty big assortment.

Hmmm... since he just started to look into these things. he probably had just started to watch Gundam Seed that's played on Cartoon Network. Kids are very specific on what gundam from which series of the Gundam anime they want. You gotta ask a bunch of questions to figure that out first.

I agree with ArchAngel on this one, find out which Gundam the child is interested in, then go from there. There's a surprisingly large assortment of Gundam to choose from.

Go to Amazon.com and do a search for Gundam, it'll bring up a huge assortment of kits. Kits labeled MG are pretty complex, and PG are definately not for kids. You should be able to find plenty of Gundam Seed kits for the youngun' to whet their appetite.

@frosty - I love the SEED Mobile GINNs & GuAIZs. Excellent designs. That's what I'd do first. If you want something with more traditional Gundam stylings though, the Striker Dagger would be the way to go. Either way, I'm thinking you'll find the kits pretty simple given the content of your signature file! I love the roden fokker. I'm new to Gundam kits myself-- while I've always been a fan of big stompy robot cartoons and sci-fi in general, I've primarily worked with WW2 armour and a lot of scale historical figures.

@jay12472 - I think the 1/144 scale stuff is a great place to start. The very simple kit I'm doing (link below) is a 1/144 non-grade kit. You can also get 1/144 High Grade kits that are about twice the cost and twice the number of pieces/complexity. I'm starting with the 1/144 non-grade but am already looking forward to the HG. As you can see from Aurora-7's daughter, kids can even manage complex 1/100 scale kits as long as there's sufficient guidance and motivation. If you can't find any in the local model shops, I'd recommend http://www.gundamstoreandmore.com as a cheap place to get a couple 1/144 kits. You may want to snag one for yourself and join us!

Speaking of people joining mustangs102 will be joining with a kit-bashed/custom creation of a MSZ-0018 Triple Zeta Sentinel - I'm not sure if it's made from a combination of kits, scratchbuilt parts or what (nor do I yet know the scale), mustangs102 will have to fill us in. Either way, welcome! It's cool to see such an ambitious project!

As for my own kit, I have 3 more seam lines to sand smooth and I'll be on to puttying. Things are going at a good pace considering the simplicity of the kit. I wasted a session on modifiying the ankles to get more mobility but it ended up being not worth the trouble on such a simple kit.

well i just joined and saw the custom color scheme for the wing zero custom. i really do like it, i myself did one out of the three 1/100ths i had, and then did a battle scar as close as i could to the movie,i still am doing it, updating as i get better photos.
well anyways here are some pictures of my MSZ-0018 Triple Zeta Sentinel Version Custom(its a mouthfull ain't it, lol) that i am building right now. and i find it easier to just post the few pics that i have right now on my photobuck. and i am looking for some suggestions for both feet coverings for the front of the legs. i am getting redy to modify the insides of the legs to try and get the Zetas' feet to work in it. the strike feet were only temporary substitutes. the legs have to still fold and fit the feet in there.
but from the pictures of the Zeta can anyone come up with a part that i could use to cover the legs and increase the size of the legs so it ballances out a little better on looks. my buget is straped so i have to use what i have got.

also i was wondering if anyone has a color scheme that i could use that would still leave the shoulders blue i kinda like the decals and want to leave them.

anyways here is my photobucket

Welcome to the forums mustangs!

Nathaniel recommended going to http://www.colorblender.com to me, where I put in a color I wanted to build off of for my scheme and it suggested some other shades. I just worked off of that. Try putting in your blues and see what other shades are recommended.

Since I'm at work I can't see your builds, but once I get home I'll check 'em out. Once again, welcome!

mustangs102: Maybe try the lower legs from an RX-78 GP01-Fb or from a RX-78 GP02.

Wow. That's pretty impressive. I find scratchbuilding and modifying kits enough of a challenge without having to worry about them staying transformable!

That's a tough call. I don't think I'm familiar with how they all fold together well enough to suggest anything as a good foot replacement. I do think the Strike's feet are too small.

I do have one suggestion-- it may be a bad one though. What about some sort of shoe/sabot foot? When it's in armour mode, it would be a thruster or an armour plate or something (there'd be two of them). When it transforms, they'd come off of their location and would be mounted on it's feet for greater stability and whatnot. It might not work or it might be too much of a stop gap solution, but it's all I've got for a suggestion.

QUOTE: also i was wondering if anyone has a color scheme that i could use that would still leave the shoulders blue i kinda like the decals and want to leave them.

They are pretty nice. It's just a medium blue right? Would the blue be the main colour or be pretty much just on the shoulders and on a few highlight spots here and there? A brown that's almost an equal mix of red and green would probably work-- but it would be strange and rather earthy looking which might not suit the really high tech look. The yellow that's already on the kit looks like it works. Shades of grey usually work with most colours. A darker blue could also work. A medium blue is actually suprisingly hard to find a good match that still suits the feel of the kit. Perhaps the typical gundam colours would be a good way to go. A dark/blood red would also work, as long as it wasn't right next to the blue-- I find that ends up looking strange.

Welcome to the Group Build!

I finished sanding my kit tonight. Tommorow I'm going to putty it up-- hopefully the primer I ordered will arrive early next weak. If it doesn't, I'll have to start on the Zaku Gunner kit for something to do while I wait.

well i have done as much on the feet as i can for now and did some modifications that really made a nasty mess(learn as we go, huh). and i found that my suite has one Extremely!! nasty flaw.... it's back heavy like no other. soooo i have to do the same thing that bandai did for the ex-s sentinel... build a stand! so i get to go onto trying and building one. i will try to get some more pics of the proccess onto my photobucket soon. i have to keep barrowing my friends digital camera.

Darn, that tri-Z included superior gundam, ZZ, Z, super gundam, Strike, Buster canon from wing zero and the shoulder armor from a Deathscyth Hell??!!! are those shoulder canons from freedom or double X??

Oh well, kul design with a ridiculous amount of energy drain and small feet. but it's still kul.

legs from Mk II, which is slightly bigger and bulkier with two pretty big booster pod might bring some balance to that superior gundam upper body form.

well okay lets start off here i did some moding and the zeta feet somewhat work now, but yah i never thought about the gp01 or gp02 legs to go on but i then run into the problem of transforming into mobile armour mode (MA), and even if i could get the supergundams' legs on here they are actually smaller than the legs that are on the ZZ. but it was a very nice suggestion, i had never thought about the suites that are actually from the same series. i will soon have a photo up of what it looks like so far. i actually don't have any supergundam in this kit right now since i don't actually have one, and can't afford to get one either. the cannons on the shoulders on the other hand are actually from the Double X. nice eyes hardly anyone who has seen this kit has realized that. i also figured out a little bit of a way to get the Zetas' cannon and shield into this thing it really doesn't look to bad in the armour mode nore in regular mode. ****** for the main color i was really looking at having a flat red be the main color, i would also paint the shoulders that way if i had another set of decals to put on to the shoulders but alas i don't... well not it is off to build the stand out of spare part trees. wish me luck i should have some photos posted by mid saturday. see you around. thanks for the suggestions. i will still try the gp02 and gp01fb feet and take a pic for laughs though.

oh yeeeaaa... ic. took another look and that white flyer thing on the backpack was definitely different from the flyer in the supergundam set. my bad. you are missing out on another battleship class canon and two giant missile/booster pods though. hehehe. then again your gundam is already crazier than the FAZZ.
