Really!!! I am unaware of the French Canadian situation you mention Karl. I do know that the French Canadian 425 Alouette squadron was based at Tholthorpe (sp?) with my Uncle's 420 squadron but that is the extent of my knowledge of French Canadian participation.

Karl  Actualy the French Canadians and others who refused to go overseas where anti-conscriptionists  and their impact on the war effort was minimized by priminister Makenzie King's skillfull handling of the conscription question.

Quite a few French Canadians served overseas,   To my knowlege there were 3 French Canadian regiments at Normandy " Royal 22 Rgt,  Fusiller de Mont-Royal and Le Rgt De La Chaudiere".  Le Fusiller de Mont-Royal was also at Dieppe,  I'm probably missing a few I'm working from memory. The Airforce also had good representation of French Canadians as for the  Navy I would not be able to say.

I can't agree more with your statement that the efforts of other countries get lumped in with the UK effort and don't get the recognition they deserve.

Cheers

Dave, I only became aware of the French Canadian issue from reading about it in Max hasting's Armageddon. Apparently senior Canadian commanders on the ground were appalled at the fact that the equivalent of several divisions worth of men were doing little back in  Canada, when  all the Commonwealth  units serving in Northern Europe were sufferring from a drastic shortage of manpower, particularly infantry units.

Marc, I don't deny the contribution of French Canadians in WWII, however like their cousins in France there seems to have been a great deal of ambivalence toward the Allied cause, a subject Clostermann touched upon in 'The Big Show', with obvious repulsion.

Karl:   Sad but true.  This was due to the church and government officials preaching the affaires of Britain are not ours.  The Maire of Montreal Camilien Houde was arrested and turfed into jail for encouraging people to boycotte the draft.  That attitude can still be found today in Quebec despite all that a fair number ignored the powers that be and joined up anyway Ah! the joys of politics.

You guys sure do make for an interesting read!!  I haven't checked this thread for a little while now and well, the history just keeps on flowing.

Karl, did I hear it mentioned that you have read Max Hasting's Armageddon?  What's it like as a read because I have been interested in picking that book up for a while now.

Darren, I'm in the middle of reading it, but would recommend it to anyone. Hasting's views on the performance of the Western Allies make for interesting reading, and some of the events covered bring home the true horror of the final collapse of Germany.

Dave, you can count me in as a fer sure.  I just ordered the Academy 1/72 PBY-5a Catalina.  I'll be doing it as Fl/Lt David Hornell's Canso from RCAF No.162 that flew out of Iceland in the summer of 1944. Fl/Lt David Hornell was postumously awarded the VC in June of '44 when he died after attacking and sinking a U-boat.

Panzerwulf, while I didn't look very hard for Coastal Command decals, I did find Canso marking for Fl/Lt Hornell's Canso.  www.canmillair.com  I think I'll be ordering the 1/72 decals from this guy.

Mark, you should try the experience and satisfaction of making a "solid kit"....Approve [^], I say "making" for you actually have to make "all" parts!!!!

Well, I am ready to start. All parts of the kit are accounted for. Will start "cutting" the fuselage block to general shape and then sand. Wood is great, Mahogany, perfectly sanded.

Solid, the official start date for this GB is not until Feb. 1st but if you want to start now I'm willing to cut some slack for anyone willing to start from a block of wood.

That would be great Richard. Thumbs Up [tup]  It is my understanding that the Mk XV was arriving in units right at the end of the war with a Griffon motor and folding wings.  Is this correct?

Yeah didn't they encounter problems with that Mk of seafire owing to the torque of the Griffon makng it swing if the throttles were opened up to fastQuestion [?]

Mmm... the group build will start just when Revell is going to release their 1/72 Type VIIC/41 (see this forum thread)... Looks like some folks will be able to join us then! Personally, I'm gonna build one of those, but will wait a couple of months to get some additional PE parts! This new sub looks really awsome!!! Pictures (text in German alas)

This is what I could find on the Griffon installed in the Sweafire:

The Seafire XV was the first Griffon-powered Seafire. It combined the wing of the Seafire
III with the fuselage of the Spitfire V and the engine, cowling and prop of the Spitfire XII. The Griffon turned opposite the Merlin, but the "bend" of the airframe was not changed, which led  Griffon Spitfires to swing on takeoff.

I checked the kit and there are only a total of 41 pieces.  How long do you think it will take to build this thing?

To be honest Richard I wouldn't have a clue, If the kit has a good parts fit and goes together smoothly it shouldn't take long at all but if the kit is like my Supermarine Seaplane from testors with a horrible fit and no detail than it may take months, But with your great skill level in mind i would say that you will have it together fairly quickly.....

Rex Thanks for the linksThumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup] That is one cool looking U-Boat, looks like i'm gonna have 2 1/72nd scale U-Boats in the collection....

Speaking of the Revell monster U-Boat you all know that i'm doing it for this GB along with the Eduard set and i'm pretty sure that i mentioned the fact that i had already made a start on it before this GB came up but stopped work on it untill the official start date....

Anyways here is a pic of what i have already done, I opened up the hull openings by sanding them out from the inside which seemed easier to me than drilling and filing, the torpedo tubes are also painted and installed and the deck has been glued down, I havn't yet put any of the PE onto the model or done any sanding to make the deck seams go away, that will come next after the GB officially kicks off.....

I stuck a DVD case in front of the model for scale, the whole kit is 93:3 cm long

That looks awesome Jules, definitely have to add one of those to the collection as soon as I figure out where to put it.  I don't think the missus will let me put it on the fireplace mantel.Sad [:(]  I have my eye on the GATO coming out later this year too!  Need to clean out some of my stash though before I can justify buying it.   Thanks for the pic, looking forward to more.

Two and  a half weeks to go!!!  Propeller [8-]

And I don't have my kit or decals yet.Sad [:(]  Apparently the PBY-5a is a popular kit here in Calgary, as it is the kit to model any Canso used by the RCAF. The LHS better not sell to someone else once it comes in...Angry [:(!]

Yeah my missus said she wouldn't mind if i displayed it in the lounge pretty much where it's sitting in the pic but only if it has it's owm display case and only if the display case is stained the same colour as that lowline entertainment unit....

In hindsight it would have to be in it's own case because the little monsters i mean my wonderfull kids would trash it within a week......

Jay I bet you can't wait until your little one is old enough to destroy a couple of models.....
