Battle of the Atlantic Feb. 1 to Aug 1, 2006

JAY im definatly going to dress up the pit a bit but i'm REALLY going to do a number on the gunners positions as they have those large greenhouse blisters the cutaway site is going to come in real handy

do you have any info  on kingfishers ? have found out a pair of kingfishers from VS-9D4 from Cherry Point N.A.S.  North Carolina  were credited with sinking U-576 in the Battle of Diamond  Shoals 15 July 1943 am currently looking for squadron photos and markings have found out about the pilots. kingfishers played a part in damaging U-576 in the beginning of the battle and at the end with the coup de gras in sinking the U-576. killer birds!!

Thanks  im looking forward to my first GB have found the markings and diagrams to the first kingfisher to sink a  U-Boat in the Battle of the Atlantic the kingfisher was a U.S. Navy OS2U-3 Kingfisher A/C #5771 was used by the U.S.Coast Guard flown by Pilot Lt Loren Perry and was the first U.S.Coast Guard Aircraft to sink a U-Boat on 15 May 1942 am looking into the U-Boat # And location of the battle i also have started on my little killer bird  thanks for giving me a chance to show my skills and being part of something great.

well, for those of you not in the BoG GB... this weekend was spent in an eternal wince as the in-laws were staying the weekend.  More than once the time period it has taken me to do various repairs related to Hurricane Rita or just plain remodeling were mentioned, as was the time I must have spent modeling instead based on the number of kits I had displayed that were not there the last time they visited. 

Actually it was fun and beyond a few moments of biting my tongue I enjoyed it thoroughly...

Hillbilly - I'm from down in your neck of the woods originally... I grew up over in Groves, a couple of miles from Port Arthur and the bridge over to your side.  I moved up here a few yrs ago but still got hit by the hurricane!  (Up near Dayton and Liberty, TX)  I only got a 100 foot tree on the roof and it rolled of and squashed the AC... other than that we did ok...   ---I am also a huge Kingfisher fan and plan on hitting ebay soon to get another.  I wish they would come out with it again, it doesn't even have to be a retool... a rerelase would be fine so I don't have to pay ebay sized shipping costs!  Hmmm.. I wouldn't mind doing the one that rescued Ediie Rickenbacker when he was flying in a B-17 over the Pacific on some sort of publicity thing...

I have been doing some Schnellboot research and plan to do one of three S-boats captured in 1944/45 and eventually brought to the US for testing.  There's an interesting history to each, especially post war... and from what I can tell from the research, one might even still exist as the Navy surreptitiously sold it to a private interest (re: a millionaire)

I did see one interesting camo scheme I am interested in.  Reminiscent of a cross between Luftwaffe mottle and Tiger Ambush Scheme.  If anyone has a ref with a color plate of this I would appreciate a shot of it... looks challenging!!!

heh the last time I built a Kingfisher was in 1979 it was the old lindberg kit 1/72 i thinkwhat did i care it was blue (my fave color) it had wings and floats thats all that mattered to my 9 year old exitement now I'm looking at the new 1/48 seamew from czech model i just love the lines of it

Tom that is one neat looking paintjob on that S-boat if you cant find the colors WING IT I'm sure it would look cool anyway call it "historical artistic licence"

Thanks Rick and Marc I am enjoying a simple build for a change.  Jay it is the 1/48 Hobbycraft of Canada.  There isn't an aweful lot to it as far as detail and number of parts are concerned but it seems to be a nice kit with no fit problems to speak of.  I have now assembled it, primed and painted the upper and lower surfaces.  More to follow.

no more work on the guns at the moment streched sprue is not going to cut it for the barrels.it's way too weak I'm going to pick up some fine brass wire and try that . I hope that works as I have already chopped off the barrels of the guns I'm converting lol

thanks am looking forward to this GB have all ready got started on my little killer bird and found out my version spotted and assissited in the sinking of U-176 along with the subchaser CS-13 from the cuban navy in the battle in nicolas channel the Bahamas on 15 MAY 1943 im looking forward to making this project totaly authentic as humanly possable for my first GB i think the greatest complament a modeler can receive about his work is how real and authentic are projects look!! my kids try to tell me that i have OCD Obsesive Compulseive Disorder because im such a profectionist when it comes to my kits i build i dont think so i think im a builder of true scale realistic repleicas of historic objects and that makes me very proud of the work i do!! were all saving history by the research we do on our projects and letting people see them as for what they are a view into the past and not to be forgotten!! thats just what i think and i say we are a special group of people to produce kits at this level of realism we are true artestins of our craft why is this true because it takes years of work and dedication to get to our level or everybody would be as good as us im glad the younger generations are grabing the torch that we are passing and running with it to help keep our hobby alive for the future generations of artestins to learn and enjoy as we do today its a great time to be in modeling

Progress update:  Painted the base coat on the main components of my two O-class destroyers.  Now to attempt the crazy camo!

Some great progress so far-- kudos to you both Richard and Solid.

I sprayed the interior green on my Dauntless the other day and have started assembling the interior bits....hopefully I'll get some pics up soon.  It feels good to dive into another AM SBD kit....I have a hoard of them, but try to spread them out and savor them.  This is the Dash 5 version I am doing now and I plan on the Atlantic Dark Gull Gray over Insignia White scheme.

One question though-- my LHS only has MM semi-gloss white and flat white-- is there any real difference between these and the Insignia White??
