♠ Allied Aces GB (WW1 -WW2) April 2006 Start - Sept 2006 Finish
Posted by jboutin on Wednesday, December 14, 2005 10:18 AM

Welcome to the Allied Aces Group build!

We are underway!

Rules:

- Starts April 2nd, 2006 and ends September 30th, 2006 (6 months!)

- Open to anyone interested in building an AIRCRAFT flown by an ACE (5+Victories).

- Any scale

- AM, PE, resin - what ever you want to put on your airplane to make it more authentic.

- Have fun!!!

- History on the ace you choose is highly encouraged!

- This covers all Allied Aces from WW1 and WW2.  That means, British, Canadian, American, Russian, Australian, French - anyone who fought against the Kaiser/Austro-Hungarian Empire for WW1 and for WW2, Nazi Germany, Japan or any of the axis powers.

- Generally, an ace has been defined as a pilot who has shot down 5 or more enemy aircraft.  For WW1 it started at 10 but for WW2 it was brought down to 5, not sure why though.  For this build I am going with 5 or more victories.

To help you out with your choice of aces there are numerous websites out there with lists, two of my favourites are these:

http://www.theaerodrome.com/

http://www.acesofww2.com/

Here are the badges you can use, please down load them to your own website if you can.  Also if you are serious about joining this build, by all means add one to your sig, otherwise please refrain from doing a badge grab.

I am in with two P51 Mustangs...one B and one D, both for Yeager...I know the B was the model he was shot down in, but why not!  The D will be in the OD finish with the "5" model fuselage (sans fin fillet)...

Great Call Jay !!!

Hmmm… I heard rumors of this build somewhere and now here it is.Big Smile [:D]

Could you put me down please for a SPAD XIII flown by Capt. Eddie Rickenbacker. I don’t have a kit at this moment, but I’m planning to go with a Hobbycraft in 1/32 scale.

Jay, I'm in.

Not sure what I'll go for, possibilities at present:

  • Roland Garros' Moraine Saulnier N type. ( I think he qualifies as an ace?)
  • Pierre Clostermann's Tempest, 33 victories, probably the 1/72 offering from Academy.

Having typed that, it may well all change.

This is shaping up to be a good one!....One question for everyone...does anyone have  two spare 1/72 black 6 decals for Yeager's NMF Glamorous Glennis III? (you know the funny looking "long necked" one)  I checked my research material last night and found I will need these for the OD Green P51D-5 model I plan to do...I do not have these in my spares and have a hard time justifying purchasing an entire sheet for two small decals...trade would be good and I will cover postage for sure...

How did I know you'd be the first...Don't underestimate yourself Tanky. You had an idea on the last one and your idea was correct, yes I picked Bong's P-38.  What you get is my undying adoration and praise for being an excellent study of all things about ACES!

Now for the second part of the challenge! you forgot their mounts!Wink [;)]

Well Jay you know i'm in on this one and you know i was planning on doing the Sopwith Triplane flown by R A Little but i've changed my mind since the last SQD order and decided to do the Triplane for the next Aussie GB, for this one and i think you will like my choice i'm going to build the Roden 1/48 SE5A flown by the Great Canadian Ace Billy BishopThumbs Up [tup]

Nieuport scout (later switched to SE5)

P-51D mustang "Glamorous Glennis III"

La-7

F6F Hellcat "Minsi"

Hawker Hurricane (also flew spitfires occasionally)

P-51D Mustang "Big Beautiful Doll"

Spitfire MK IXc

P-38 Lightning ("Marge" and picture of his wife on the side)

Nieuport 17

I think that about covers it. Big Smile [:D] Oh BTW, if I do do my La-7 for this build it might be for soviet ace Alexei Sergeivich Kumanichkin -35 victories.

Someone really should do Eddie Rickenbacker for this build.

BTW (again) is anyone planning an "Axis Ace" GB? I mean someone needs to build Richthofen, Hartmann, Galland, Bar, Marseilles, Wick, Hahn, Immelman, Udet, Lowenhardt, and of course Boelcke.

Hey there Jay, found the site.  I think I'll do Adriano Visconti from Italy.  TheCraftworks Macchi 202/05 was the first kit I got on my quest to aquire all the aces aircraft. I just love the lines of the Greyhound especially in that mottled grey camo.  Plus I got that book on how to build resin models which features the Craftworks kit.  I figure its a perfect time to tackle the resin beast figurin since three other of my kits are resin also.  The buffalo, P-51B, La-5 are all resin as is the conversion kits for my three different Spitfires.  All I'm waitin on is a 1/32 Tempest so I can do Closteterman.  I could do another Spit but I've got three different ones as it is. Sorry to ramble just stoked to be amongst brethren.

Jules - Right on, will add you to the front page.Thumbs Up [tup]

Tanky - Wooverstone8 is doing Rickenbacker, and actually Nungessers is a Spad XIII.

Deathbringer, Sorry but Visconti flew for Fascist Italy, allied with Nazi Germany so he is not valid for this build. You must pick an allied ace.

This looks interesting and plenty of time to start. I would like to join with something different, a 1/48 Classic Airframes Curtiss Hawk III bi-plane in the markings of pilot Arthur Chin - Chinese/American Ace (born in Portland, Orgeon) with 9 kills before he was shot down and wounded in 1939.  Recoginzed as one of America's first aces in WWII by  Hall of Fame of the American Airpower Heritage Museum. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in 1995.

Waikong, that is such a cool and interesting subject! I've never heard of him.  That is why I love these GBs!  You get to learn all sorts of neat things.  I will add you to the front page!

Tanky, don't be so hard on yourself, I didn't realize it but for being such a Famous French ace of WW1 he only had 13 victories, he was a pow for part of the war though.

Did you know that all of John D. Landers's aircraft had the name Big Doll or some sort of deriviative? His P-40 in New Guinea was called "Big Doll".  I would love to build that P-40 but I have never seen a decal set for it.  I guess I should look a little harder.

Oh my bad, I looked right at the "Allied Aces" and ignored it.  Since its allies, I'll probably do the Czech ace Karel Kuttelwascher's night fighting Hurricane or NZ Falkland Grey's Mk XIV Spit.  I've got warbirds conversion kit including the wings which would give me good resin experience.
