Bob,

Nothing wrong with the photo or the work, great looking office! I am interested to see how your fade job turns out.

Mark T Gold Coast,

The Goose served in all the theatres of the war.  However, the information on the aircraft is not very deep.  If I may suggest the straightforward three tone scheme and the typical US Insignia.

NucMedTech,

Nice Widow.  Way to go on the detailing set!

To All, especially Espins1

Thanks for the patience, I am back and will try to get the list updated as soon as I can.

bump....and while I'm here....I made a great deal of progress on the Zero today.  The Tamiya kit offers a fair amount of detail for a low price.  Some my not like the mix of recessed & raised panel lines, but this one is going to be my 'test bed' for some weathering techiniques that I'm considering-flat aluminum undercoat with 'faded' green on top.  Might be fun.  There are also a couple of seams that are worse than I would have expected from Tamiya (especially around the cowl area, but it is an old kit.  btw-the interior looks better than the pictures, at least imho

Nice job on the Kate Silentmodeler!  That's one of the few built Kates I've every seen, which is surprising considering it was such an important aircraft for the Japanese.

NucMedTech-love that engine-that P-61 is going to be an impressive build.  Looking forward to more progress pics.

Silentmodeler-nice work-good weathering.

I broke out the airbrush and painted the interior bits of the Tamiya Zero-I used the Tamiya recomended Flat Green-I think it may have been a bit too dark.  Gonna try to lighten it a bit by dry-brushing.   This is going to be an OOB-I need a quick project to boost my morale.

Okay, here is the port side engine with mount. First time doing an exposed engine so a lot of learning as I go along.

The rear (transmission?) of the engine will be buried in the boom of the airplane so I'm not to concerned with those details, but if anyone has any advice or tips please let me know. It will be a little while before I attach it to the plane. I know I need to file the engine mounts on the ring, will work on that later.

Pics may be slow coming from me - my digital is in the process of being replaced. I have a good 35mm though and always get a CD with it!

Weekend update,

I got some work done on the p&r 2800 engine (I'l post pics soon). Still trying to figure a way to make the engine mount, but made some headway on that. Other than that I'm slowly plugging away.Cowboy [C):-)]

I'm thinking we may need to find a book that is specifically about the Goose, then maybe we'll have a little luck eh?

I did some digging around myself, and could find very little in the way of detailed info on their war time use other than just vague references to them.  It's a shame really Sigh [sigh], I think it's a story that needs to be told, although there seems to be an abundance of information on their civil use.

Thanks Scott for the effort.

Research isn't really my forte' but normally you can just google it and something like an F-15 has pages of images etc. I just seem to keep getting the same speil about civil development blah blah, 2 lines on the fact it was used in the war and then more about it's stellar civil record.

From what I have been able to gather, and this is pure speculation, is that there would have been one or two here and there as reserve transport/supply aircraft and a few employed in maritime patrol/SAR duties. I don't think it played a major part in any theatre it was deployed in but it would have been a handy tool to have in ones war chest all the same.

I would love to know more about this plane and it's service as I'm sure it'll be an interesting tale.

The RAF used them a fair bit too.

Thanks agin mate

Hi Guys,

I have to say, the quality of the models that are being built here is amazing.

I'm just about to start my Czech Model 1/48th Grumman Goose so it won't be too long till I've got some pics up.

I'll be building it as a USN bird in the 3 colour scheme.

Okay, now I understand.

My suggestion would be to flatten the paint if it is already not so, then get out the pastel chalks, not the oil based ones mind you.  Get yourself one of the aforementioned blending stumps.

Now you can mask panels with Post-It notes if you want to, select a lighter color pastel chalk, powder it and very carefully begin rubbing, with the airflow.

It will take as many applications as your taste suits.  Not only is this good for lighter but darker is just the same.

Good luck.

thanks joe ill do that on my next build

what i was looking for, if suppose you leave a fresh painted aircraft on the carrier and fly around it and be on carrier for more than 6 months,  the paint will change in to different colors because from the salt in the air/ocean. so im just wondering how to make the paint fade since i have see it on Top Gun Tomcat in the Fine Scale mag in Nov 2006 issue. they use two different types of grays over light gull gray.  so im wondering how to do it on green   i hope its clear up.  Smile [:)]

update:  boy i was battling against the decals since i usually do it one by one then accdiently spill on the decals so had to put the wet decals in the water and trying to put it on before too late and i won the battle  whew.  it comes up pretty good   will post up the pix when its final done.

Thanks Joe.  I'm in agreement with you regarding the staining-I would expect color variations where the paint had chipped and the BMF had weathered at different rates.

Bob,

Personally I think it is a good thing.  I have never seen in person a really beat up aircraft.  However, from the color photos I have seen there seems to be a fading and chipping in some sor of gradient, for lack of a better term.

Then again I could be a...

Joe-is the "staining" effect around the salt a good thing or a bad thing?

Thanks

Regarding salt staining...

I like your Kate...but I think you may have missed the chance for salt staining and chipping.  If I totally mis-understand your intention, my apologies.

Try this link from Swanny's page.  http://www.swannysmodels.com/Salting.html

It describes chipping, but I have found an interesting side effect in most cases.  If you put the salt on over a regular (no future or clear coat) base metallic then lay on a flat acryllic over the salt, there will be a "staining" effect around the salt.

The other method which I used on the P47 is to use an artist's blending stump and pastels.  I used it to lighten panels.  The stumps are cheap, I paid $1.20 at the local art shop for a pack I will never use up.

Hope this helps.
