Scott, looking forward to seeing some pics.

The splinter camo sounds cool.

You know how I said was going to pick up Hasa's 109E in Civil war markings.......

......well I went to the LHS, and it was there, sitting on the shelf, when I saw.....

......ICM's Polikapov I-15 in 1/72.

Before I knew it, I'd bought it and was out of the shop.

This is my first stab at a limited run kit, and I must admit I'm quite impressed. Detail is all recessed, and very fine. Of the 53 parts in the box, 19 of them go into the cockpit!

It's not Tamigawa, having plenty of flash, and somewhat vague instructions, but nothing scary.

Oh, and it's tiny, all of 3 inches long!

I may change the scheme I'm doing on my Bf109.  I bought a nice Cutting Edge decal set a long time ago for this kit that included a single color scheme for Werner Molders Bf 109D-1 "Luchs" 6 ' 79, with the Mickey Mouse emblem and I had planned on doing my Classic Airframes Bf109D in that scheme.

I started on the resin parts last night and I guess I had always known but didn't really put two and two together, but the kit also includes a resin nose for a Bf109B.  My decal set has a great scheme for a Bf 109B-2 flown by Uffz. Wilhelm Staege 6 ' 30, with a gorgeous splinter scheme of RLM 62/RLM 63 topside and RLM 65 on the underside with the cool black "top hat" emblem on the side.

The more I think about it, the more I want to make the Bf109B with the splinter scheme.  Whistling [:-^]

I'm also going to try and do my Cr. 32 at the same time I work on the 109, but won't start on the Fiat until my P-40E is in the final stages.

Man, this X-Acto razor saw set is very nice.  It works fantastic for removing those resin blocks!  I should be able to make short work of the resin goodies and get some painting going soon.  Smile [:)]

Just test fitted the engine cowling (kit came with two.... for a 109B and a 109D).  The fit is "interesting".  I can tell already that glueing the fuselage halves together and attaching the cowling are going to be a bit tricky.... good thing I just got lots of seam fixing experience on my P-40E!  Shock [:O]

I finished my Panther for the Italeri build, working on the seams on my P-40E, and once I get it primered I'm going to start cutting the resin bits of my Bf109D for this build. I hope to have some pics worth posting no later than tomorrow afternoon.  Smile [:)]

Now it's time to go outside and try to make some good pics of the Panther.  Cool [8D]

Rick, stunning job on the 109.

The NMF looks perfect, how do you manage it?

Scott post some pics soon.

Jay, looking good on the little 109.

Well seeing as everyone else is building a 109, I guess I might as well join the party, in my case it will be Hasa's Spanish Civil War E.

Saw it in the LHS earlier in the week, and would have bought had I not gone to work with without my wallet!

I'm not actually part of this build but I thought I might check up on the builds.

Rick your 109 is looking simply superb.

Scott, be sure you use a dust mask when cutting resin as resin dust is not a great thing to be breathing in.

Cheers

WTG Scott.  Good luck with your first cuts. Smile [:)]

More progress on mine.  The decals are now on & the rudder added.

Next step is detail painting & then final assembly. Around the turn & into the home stretch Big Smile [:D].

I picked up a very nice X-acto razor saw set with 3 saw blades and some other blade tips.  I hope to try it out tonight.  Smile [:)]

Hahaha. Besides taking the parts of the sprues and cleaning them up, that is the only thing I did on that kit. I'm going to take a trip to my dad's house on saturday and borrow a camera to take some pictures of my progress on the Ar-68E and Ar-95L.

Dave,  Thanks for the comments.  Alclad is a great product & easier to use than some seem to think.

Scott,  I got the block off the cowl without any problem, but it's a bit of a white knuckle task.  Do not remove the back part of the Pit insert, it kinda locates the pit in the fuselage & is one of the major attachment surfaces.  It won't be visible after you button up the fuselage.

Nice paint on your 109 Rick. Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]  I really have to try some of that Alcad one of these days.  Your NMF paint jobs always look so amazing.

I have a dremel, just need to find it.  After all the home remodelling not everything made it back where it was supposed to be. Shock [:O]

The only part I'm a bit nervous about is removing the casting block from the cowling without damaging the the delicate lip that attaches to the fuselage.  Dead [xx(]  Did you have any issues with that?

And man was I relieved when I looked back at your cockpit photos and saw that I wouldn't have to remove all the resin behind the cockpit backing.  Whistling [:-^]

Scott, when cutting the casting blocks from the resin parts, just work slow & keep the cut straight.  You'll still have to do clean up with sanding sticks/paper, but cut as close as safe to minimize clean up.  When you get to the wheel bay inserts, you'll also need to thin the plastic on the upper wing halves to get a fit.  If you have a Dremel Tool, that will be fairly easy.  If not, gonna take a lot of elbow grease Smile [:)].

I have some other kits with resin parts in them (more Classic Airframes of course Wink [;)]) like my Fiat Cr.32 and I have a 1/32 Trumpeter P-40B with a Cutting Edge cockpit set, so I'll be doing lots more resin in the near future.  I'll pick up both as I'm sure I'll need them!  Thanks again for all the great tips.  Smile [:)]

Thanks Scott.  The Razor saws will most likely be found in the Hobby Shop.  X-Acto makes some nice ones.  You'll need two sizes eventually, but if you only want to start out with one, get the 1" deep blade.  Eventually, you'll also want the 1/2" deep blade for finer work.  Get both now if your planning on doing many Multi-media kits.

I'm going to pick up a razor saw tomorrow.  Is that something you get at the hardware store or hobby shop?

Scott, a real good razor saw is the only way to go with resin IMHO.

Anyhoo, got the main painting done on mine.  Almost ready for decals Smile [:)].

I'm new to resin so I'm slowly trying to learn how to cut this stuff out without damaging it.  Some of it's going to be a bit tricky.  The PE set in this kit is really cool! Cool [8D]

Rick, you have good eyes and are very perceptive, right on both accounts!  (big gap and the wing is not glued yet). With all the dry fitting I've done for the Heller kit, I noticed what will probably be some nasty gaps so I bought some mr.surfacer 500 to try.

Thanks Jay.  Yours is looking good, but that's a nasty gap at the wing root... or is it not glued yet ?

Awesome looking build so far rick, you are an inspiration to us all.  I just hope my little 1:72 looks half as good.  Finally here are a few progress pics.  These are from 2 weeks ago and no more progress has happened as I am finally finishing my Spitfire Mk9 (remember the one from the Allied Aces GB?).  Have a gander, the one with the resin tail is a Bf109 G6 I am doing for the Axis Aces GB as one of Hartmans birds.
