Hey thanks Erock for the info on the Tiger kit. I just dunno about that kit.

I'm leaning towards calling D4W this evening and talking to Dave.

I use a real similar method for when I wash. I'm about to do my roadwheels on my 1/35 Tiger and they've been shot in base color with ambush colors. Next I'll shoot them with future. Then I'll do a wash with soap, water and acyrlic paint. After it dries a little I'll wipe off the excess leaving the grime behind. Then do a drybrush to add a little highlite. And add chips. Then do flat coat.

I found that before when I didn't use a clear coat before a wash the wash would sink into the pours of the paint and darken the color too much. At 1/35 it just made my tanks and vehicles look too dark.

Thanks for the help on the sequence of events. Yeah, DC got tore up pretty bad. They got caught with their pants down. But then, they always seem to get caught unawares whenever a storm hits. I saw the thread about "Two fools loose in Edmonton". Great pictures of everyone. That means I'll have to add a picture of myself along with the many pictures I already owe you.

We didn't get much here in Pittsburgh. Just a steady rain. But I have friends in DC that I haven't had a chance to talk to. I'll try to call them tonite Smile [:)]

I've been lookin at Erocks pictures of the wonderfully huge Aber set for the Tiger 1 and it looks very much like some of the larger pieces of PE will be tough to bend even in an Etch mate.

How are you going to tackle that?

Also what are the brass tubing pieces for?

For bending the larger PE parts, you turn the top plate of the Etch-Mate around, giving you a large straight edge.

As for the metal rods and and such, some are used for the hinges on the working hatches, another is used for putting a center bend in the PE wingnuts. The wire is also used for smaller hinges, making the hinge springs (yes, you actually have to twist the wire around a metal rod and make the springs) and if you want, to make untapped screws.

The set comes with small screws (real) that you would use if tapping out the plastic. [:0]

I would also add a quick tip in here (as I just finished the dull coat on the wheels)

After spraying the Dull coat, I have a normal hairdryer ready. I Quickly go over the parts just sprayed. The hairdryer speeds up the process and makes them "Duller" I have it on the highest heat setting but never closer, to the parts, than about 15 inches. Always move the dryer (as if spraying)

You will notice a big improvement on how the parts turn out.

Erock, when you get a chance, would you post a picture ( or describe to me) how Aber makes the two front hull hatches operable? I'd like to scratch build mine to work, but I'm at a loss as to how to go about it; authentically.

Thanks!

Thank you again bro! And no, I don' t think I could handle the periscopes!
And here I thought I was going above and beyond with re-tooling the upper deck and adding
clear plastic to the periscopes on my new cupola. Ugh, you are a better man than I!

Kumakichi I plan on starting mine in the next couple of weeks hopefully. I'm close to finishing my Marder, then after some serious rearranging the Tiger comes out to play. Big Smile [:D]

Kuma :

Unfortunately , yea , thats what I'd do ~now~ . I'd ask the Zagi people about the timing advance though before I bought one of each . And if you don't know what 'timing advance' is , you aint raced RC ( if ye all wanna know , ask )

That eBay sale is a 56011 Tiger DMD ~basic~ , and those are getting ~rare~ . This kitty has steering & throttle , thats it .

Beware , it may have the old Type 1 boxes : if they have black covers , they are Type 4's . It can be upgraded to full-function , but its more expensive than upgrading a static Tiger !

Why did ye think we were discussing metric taps ? Its for the micro-bolts . You guys that aint using the bolts , wanna sell 'em ? I'm gonna need some ...

I've got the static Tiger 1 , what ya wanna know ? I can show you the hatches , engine deck , air-cleaners & commanders , as those are the 4 major differences , on top of the 'toy' gearbox . I could even sell/trade you my spares ...

Okie :

I'm not 100% positive on the Zagi's ... see my reply to Kuma .

As for Dirk , why not e-mail him and ask the status ?

On the hull hatches , lemme look at the static sprues , you may want to order the parts if they are all on one sprue . The periscopes may be there too .

Woofie ( catching up in bulk )

PS : Aber set closed at $162 USD , to Mike McFall in Franklin Lakes NJ , he's already paid & its off tomorrow morning .

Report : Static Tiger detail parts :

Ok guys , you're in luck .

The forward hull hatch detail , including all the hinge parts , is on the K sprue ( #0113024 )

This also carries the following alternate parts : fronts , backs & tops of both types of air cleaners ( bottom cone-shapes is on E-sprue ) ; footstep & handle for the front , mantlet facing , and exhaust guards for the Tunisian Tigers , 9 wingnuts for tiedowns , and the DAK commander half-figure .

( PS : in case the labels are different , E sprue carries the plastic barrel & side-fenders )

K sprue adds almost all of the missing detail . The only parts it does not have are the altered engine deck intake hose parts ( Aber set shows how to mod these on page 39 )

To be plain ... buy the RC Tiger & add this sprue !

Wishing he'd done this ...

Man, this is nuts. Work, work work! I am busier than one armed NY taxi driver this week. Unfortunately, none of that work will be on my Tiger. Angry [:(!] Dead [xx(] Disapprove [V] WWMcB, I e-mailed Dirk today regarding my order. So we'll see. He asked me to send the payment to his girlfriend's address, so here's hoping that he got it. Angry [:(!]
As for the Zagi's, no re-wiring will be necessary as the gearboxes are configured just for that. I've spoken with a couple R/C tankers who have upgraded their tanks to Zagi's and the hardest part is getting the 10 spoke gears off of the old motors. (But I've ordered a gear puller, so I'm not sweating it.Wink [;)] ) Thanks for the info on the hatches. Time to call Tamiya again!

Okie :

Hope ya bought a super-fine one , as most pullers won't handle anything that small . Unless you're hyper-careful with the stock motors , for some reason they develop a ~lot~ of slop in the shaft during the pull . I'm tempted to open one to find out why .

Kuma :

Okie's calling Tamiya , hold yer horses and wait for his cost-report , eh ?

Anyone :

Anyone have a local hobbyshop that carries the LRP "Truck Puller" motor ? The nearest I've found is ~Germany~ ! And to be honest , with the Tamiya semi's and the older tanks ~begging~ for ~that~ 540 motor , its amazingly stupid that no-one over here in America has begun carrying it . not even the the US Robbe and Wedico dealers are carrying it ( and their trucks beg for it too )

It comes in 7.2 & 12 volt versions , and runs about 6500 RPM ( versus 12,000+ for even a stock Mabuchi ) Its the 540 match to the Zagi's for our DMD gearboxes .

Anyone know of a similar motor for a similar price ? ( 32 Euro )

I'm almost tempted to ask one of the locals that does rebuilds to make me a few .

Relax, the gear puller is from Tamiya, so it's small enough for their motors. (I don't do anything without a plan. Wink [;)] ) Dirk finally got back to me and the parts are on the way. Tongue [:P] As for Tamiya, I don't know if they're open on Saturday, so we'll see. I guess today ain't so bad after all. At least now I know that my parts are on their way. Once I get the turret re-tooled, it will be time to shoot some paint! Big Smile [:D] Big Smile [:D] Big Smile [:D] Erock, after I get off work today I'll get those pics on disk and send them to you Monday. Wink [;)]

Who makes them? LRP expands to?

LRP is the maker name . Dunno what it stands for .

It appears Associated carries ~some~ of its line in NA ... just the electronics , as Associated has its own line of motors .

I may have to buckle down and order it from Mr. Hafner at truckmodellsport.de ( check out his 8x8's )

That or a custom-wound one ...

Nice job Erock! Those look great. Maybe this week I'll get something done as well. Have you primed and painted the hull and turret as well? Will you also wash parts of the hull and turret? (When you removed the excess wash 6 or so hours later, did you use a Q-tip with alcohol, or the same thinner used to apply the wash?)

Roy,

Nothing primed on the hull or turret yet. Going to be a while because now, all the PE parts come into play.

I will be doing the wash on the entire turret and hull (not as dark as the wheels though) As for removing the wash, I let it dry for 6 hrs, but you can begin removing earlier. The reason I waited, is that I applied at night, after work. I then removed the excess in the morning. The key is to find a happy medium. If you wait too long, it's tough to remove the wash (without really scrubbing)...too early and you wipe most of it away.

I used the very same Mineral Spirits to remove, as I did in the initial mix. You WILL go through a lot of Q-Tips. After a few wipes, they start to come apart and leave little strands. I usually use both sides, of the first Q-Tip, to wipe with the spirits. I'll then use another, which is dry, to clean up the part a bit.

Thanks Eric,

Once the weather clears up and I have some time, I can paint the road wheels and then get a wash on them. Since my cables and turret parts are on the way, I'll be able to finish the last of the build and focus on the details of painting. My wife is working on transferring the digital pictures to disk as I type this, but she is having problems
compressing the pics to fit on the disk, and we don't know what else to do. The camera she is using is Sony's newest DSC-10, 5.0 megapixel. It's detail is excellent.
It stores the pics on a memory stick that she can plug directly into her printer and from there send to the PC. Her computer doesn't have a modem though, so she has to send them from her work. Any suggestions with getting them onto disk?

FLAGS !

How many of you would want flags for your tank whip antennas ? That red onw with the 'stika for the Kitties , stars & Bars for the Pershing , and Ol' Reb for the Sherman ...

Or for you Allies , perhaps a Union Jack (Brit) , Stars on Blue W/ Jack (Auzzie) or perhaps you can think of one obvious one i've missed ... Wehrmacht ? SS ?

I have found a guy that makes stickers ... he might be interested in making us flags , so I'm getting a guess at demand so I can give him a # and get a guess at cost .

I know I'm dying for a Reb to fly from my Sherman ... and maybe a DAK one for the Tiger and Kubel ...

Let me know ( interest & quantity)

Hmmm, I had seen a flag or two on previous models and thought about it. But somehow I've gotten the impression that most of professional soldiers of the Wehrmacht didn't care too much for the political goals of the Third Reich. I'm currently reading "Tigers in the Mud" by Otto Carius. I am curious as to how much one would cost though. I still have to pick up a battle unit. Evil [}:)]

Howdy, folks!Smile [:)]

Just got back from Saipan. No Tigers there, but I saw a few Ch-has and Ha-gos, a Zero, and bits of B-29.

looks like you fellas have been busy! You put up 5 pages of posts in the 5 days I was away!

Looking good, Erock.

WW, you always amaze me with all the information you can provide! Thanks for all the tips.

Erush, the Big Chicken brought a tear to my eye...

Everybody else, looking forward to your pix and prose!

My Tiger still lurks in the closet...statically, of course.
