Welcome back J-Hulk!

Hope your vacation was a good one. Check out the post titled "Two fools loose in Edmonton" for some serious laughs. I have loads of pics, just can't get them transferred to disk to send to Erock. I've contacted Moses for some help.

Hi, Roy!
Thanks for the welcome.
Yup, great vacation!
I checked out that thread: hilarious! Great pix! I added one, too.
Looking forward to seeing your pix!

Yeah, my pics. That's kinda funny since I can't get them onto a disk!! It's ticking me off dude! Angry [:(!] Sadly I won't be able to post a pic of myself, for reasons you can guess. Wink [;)] I'd be happy just to show you guys what I've done so far on my Tiger!
But if it's any help, after seeing your pic, I was amazed at our physical similarities. Our hair is about the same length and color and the only glaring difference is my lack of facial hair.

Separated at birth!
Are you a hulking beast like me, too? I'm 6' 5", 260 lbs.
Well, about 270lbs after all that good food in Saipan...

Hulking beast? Me?! Sorry, the USMC built me to a different configuration! Wink [;)] I'm 6 foot even at 185 lbs. But someone seeing our faces would be likely to mistake us for brothers. So when you were home in Brunswick did you spend any time at St. Simon's or Solomon's island?

You're a lean, mean, Tiger-building machine!

I spent a lot of time on St. Simon's, Sea Island, Jekyll, and some on Cumberland, but I don't know Solomon's Island. Lots of Islands along the Georgia coast, though. Is it up closer to Savannah?

What (and when) were you doing in Brunswick? Anything to do with NAS Glynnco or FLETC?

And just to keep this a Tiger-themed post, Osaka's baseball team, the Hanshin Tigers, just clinched the Central League pennant last week. It's the first championship in 18 years, and this town went nuts!
I hear the phrase "Go Tigers!" a hundred times a day, and each time, I think of our build!

Yeah, I was there while in FLETC. That was back in the Summer of 99'. You are right, I always thought that Jekyll island was named Solomons island for some reason. Don't know why. As for my Tiger, I'm all excited that my final parts are on their way to me finally. (The loader's pericope shield, new turret ventilator fan, and tow cables.) I also just ordered a Tamiya battle unit so I can participate in the local tank battles! Tongue [:P] Tongue [:P]

I made some pretty good headway this weekend. I also did some studying on which upcoming kit parts I will be replacing with the Aber set and which ones I'll keep. An example: I will be using the jack holder-braces from the stock kit (they are sturdy metal U brackets) and will be using the Aber for the jack detail and handle brace.

I sat down with the different parts and looked at the detail between the two. I also tried to determine which will be the most likely to get damaged from being handled. I have to say, after looking at both very closely, Tamiya did some fine detail work on this kit Approve [^]

I have finished the frontal armor and have used some stock parts on the rear and exhaust. I will now start adding the PE parts to the rear.

I updated my completed steps at the site.

Even though this is a large kit, it doesn't mean there aren't some teeny-weeny parts. Check out this assembly for the rear. I have bent the clasp and the bracket (note the little piece of wire that will be the hinge) Those little things are the heads of the bolts Evil [}:)]

The toothpick is for size reference:

Ouch! Once again I'm glad I didn't get that set. I would have gone insane! I painted my road wheels with the base color this morning. They look great. Another coat and I'll be ready to gloss coat them and give'em a wash. So did ya'll check out the special last night on the Discovery channel? Man, that was awesome just to see the heavy metal rolling around the countryside. Too bad it wasn't a REAL Tiger though...sigh. Hey guys, I have a question regarding our respective projects. Is it better to paint the jackstand separate and glue it to the deck, or is it better to glue it to the deck and paint it all at once? I ask because I'm curious as to whether the jackstand should be painted the same color as the tank, or should it be painted to look like a block of wood strapped to the tank. I've seen it done both ways by various modellers.

Okay, I deserved that. Sometimes my typing can be off, but you know what I was talking about! So what do you do with your tanks?

As for me, I'm leaving off the smaller add-on details (tools and such) until the end. This is just to be safe. My tools have a bad habit off jumping off the model and onto the floor Wink [;)]

Roy,

I knew what you meant. Just havn' a little fun with ya. Hope I didn't offend. (But, I do glue the occasional part to the work surface. You should see what I did to the outside of the driver's hatch for my Elefant!)

I like to do the jack, jackstand, tools, etc. off the tank. So far, I've made the jackstands wood color. (Not very effectively. I'm waiting for the woodgrain painting article in FSM that's coming up.) Anyway, I paint the "wood" parts brown, then with a small brush, paint the straps, handles, latches, etc. the base color of the tank.

Let us know what you decide to do, how it works, and let us see it!

Bill,

No, no offence taken. I was just givin' you some back in return. LOL Relax bro.
I was planning to paint the tools the base color of the tank and then paint the details
like the metal for the axe, hammer and pliers before glueing them to the deck. I'll do the same with the jackstand block. I just wanted to know what you guys did with that block.

Thanks again,

Roy

Roy,

Okay, I guess we're "even"!! LOL

With a tank this big, you could try using a real piece of wood for that. I understand the Super detail set form Aber has a piece of wood to replace the kit one. Maybe someone on here could give you some ideas on that.

Have a good night;

Erock :

Please tell me ya documented all your painting methods on the site ? I wanna pick yer brains on it , as I've never been able to do that kinda detailing .

How'd you get those rivets to look so good ? They look real ! Did you use the wire , or plastic sprue ?

More Aber talk :

I've been discussing ordering with Great Models (they have the frets I want on sale) & they want to f*ck us Canadians over . Listen to how :

They want $17-20 to ship it parcel-post (NOT Air), and it only cost me $10 to ship the whole set to the US ! I'd also have to deal with the Customs assessment ...

The way around it ? Get someone in the US to order it for me , and then send it back in a CD-mailer . Is anyone game ? I can shoot you the $ (price of the order+shipping to me) instantly via PayPal .

Wittman Tiger Alert :

Verlinden's late steel-wheel'd Wittmann Tiger kit , for those of you that want a shelf-display Tiger .

Note : The R/C guys say its good for assisting on modding a Tamiya , but is ~not~ convertable in itself , as the resin is too fragile for R/C operation .

I noticed the 4 screws on the rear of your Tiger. I'm wondering what the 2 screws by the mufflers are holding? Your planning to putty over them? Or do they need to be exposed for some reason?

Let's try this again, my computer froze up on me Sad [:(]

The Screws at the top hold an inner shelf or "lip" that secures the top of the hull. I don't see a need for these to be removed, once the kit is complete. The Aber set comes with 2 covers for these.

The 2 other screws hold the jack brackets in places. They are covered when the jack is finally installed. The brackets also come with 2 holes on the bottom for screws that hold the jack secure.

Thats slick that the Aber set addresses this. And the shrouds would probably also help to conceal the 2 bigger screws.

I keep thinking in terms of static models but I am seeing that RC models have to be more robust and have more screws and bolts.

And now for today's progress....

I know it looks like I was slacking but, I have gotten quite a bit done. I have added the PE exhaust valves, PE holders (under the fenders so unless I have them folded up, it's tough to see) and I added my own chain for the left and right air cleaner access covers. I am surprised Aber didn't include this. I attached the 2 PE parts that hide the rear shelf screws.

The jack is complete but will add at the end.

You're moving right along Eric!! Question on the chains, what size are they and where did you get them? That's definitely a detail that needs to be on there. And on the rear fenders, aren't they included in the Aber set (or is it just the front) and are you not going to use the Aber ones?? Just curious.

Eric,

I asked the wife if she had any older necklaces and she gave me this one. It wound up being perfect link-length for this Tongue [:P]

As for the fenders, yes, Aber includes both front and rear in the set. I have built them and will get them painted. The kit fenders (rear) are not glued on yet, just in place with sticky fun-tack (they have to be removed to add the rest of the PE) After they are both painted, I will see which ones look better.

I was guessing to myself that you used a necklace chain Tongue [:P]

I was wondering about the Aber fenders as well. I just thought maybe you wanted the sturdier Tamiya ones for heavier duty RC usage.

Do they make glues specifically meant to glue metal parts together? How about metal to plastic? Are you using some sort of CA type glue?
