You are right Dave... when the GB is about 1 specifc a/c you learn a lot about it.  Since this is your 1st... go nuts on the buildSmile [:)]... but don't let it ge to the point where you fell pressured to do all the stuff that flies arounf in here... no pun intendedWink [;)].  I let tha happen to me last year an I ended up pulling out of some of the GB's I was in.  I never want it to have feel like I have to build something... always should be want to.

You can always count on ED

Dont get me wrong I am enjoying the build. Im just one of those people who says ohh ill just build this one out of the box. It never happens. For example I built the Pro Modeler me 410 cause I thought it looked cool. Its a nice kit but before it was over I had cut the cowling open and added a resin engine. Cut off the supercharger intakes and replaced them with correct shaped ones made from aluminum. Re sized the canopy that did not fit wth shims etc.... I think you get the point. Once i saw your radio and how cheap the kit radio looked I had to do something.

Dave, that's the beauty of modelling, and you're never "wrong" for doing it how you want. I'll even go so far as to call it "ambition" (as in "Go West, young man!")

We're lucky these days to have so many option in the aftermarket. I was talking with my Dad the other day, and he said you use to get colored plastic and glue. If you were lucky you got chrome plated wheels and bumpers (for cars). Most people just left the model unpainted, and those who painted brushed it on. He would fiddle around with ignition wires and what-not, but the point is he never had the resin, PE, etc. to the level we do.

So I say go for it! Since we've got all of these goodies, we might as well use them!

Jaypack.... yeah I thoiught I had sent you something beofre.  Sorry but did not save the address, so email me and I iwll get they off to you.

Dave I know what oyu mean.  But sometimes things can go backwards.  As in there is no way the resin engine Iplaned on using is going to fit in the space given.  I can't carve off any more before I start to get into the engine compartment.  So it may be one less detail to worry about... but is sure was a nice looking engineAngry [:(!]

Oh yeah, does anyone know of any references on the radios installed in a P-39D? I want to replace the kit one, and since some of you guys are, too, I fiuredyou'd know something about them.

Looking great jaypack. I like the belts and those gun chargeing handels look fine. I think the photoetch ones I have look to thin. Is that the preprinted color photo etched gauges. I have never seen them before they look really nice, wish my kit came with them.

Hey guys Ive been thinking about this radio (dangerous I know) anyway does anyone have any good pics of any p 39 radios behind the seat I cant find much at all? I did a google search and the first two results were this thread. I personally found it kinda funny that my search for information led me back here. So anybody got anything?

Dave the books I have don't have too much either but the clear pics show it looking like the Eduard kit radio.  I am wondering what CE used as their reference.  When you google it... try P-39 and also Airacobra, then click images and you get lots of pics.

After looking at Jaypack's cockpit I am reluctant to post my pictures. I've been working hard to deal with the fit issues on the MPM P-63. I have to fit every part several times on the interior pieces, and it is hard on the little resin bits not to mention the paintwork. Lots of redoing, multiple put the pieces together in the fuselage halves and then study where to remove resin or plastic so things fit, everything is straight, take it apart, more filing and sanding, add one more part and then go through it again. So far I think everything is straight, and with everything in the interior I can close up the fuselage sides and there is no banana shape to the nose. I'm not getting the results I want with the digital camera, either. I think I will take more pictures with the SLR tomorrow. Anyway, at least the pictures show I'm working on the little beastie.

Edit: OK, here are some new photos. Still have some work to do on picture taking. Looks like I wore the paint off the top of the stick grip. Is that weathering? I thought the seat belts were too prominent so I lightly over shot them with the cockpit green, need to hit the metal bits again with silver.

John, from what I have read about the kit you are building it is a challenging build, and it lloks like you are up to the challenge.  I know what you are talking about but I kind of like the "make it fit" part of the build... as long as it does not go on for too long.  Sure does feel nice when GIT 'ER DONE though (that was for you EdWink [;)])

Well guys another hold up. No this one wont require an investigation, a probe into the west coast office (still pending by the way) or a press conference. I went to the local hobby shop to get my olive drab for the exterior of my P 39. Well I found it but....I found three different shades. Or at least threee different numbers on the bottle. (Polly Scale.) So anyone got a guess as to what shade I need. Im doing the olive drab and white paint like "Snooks", you can see what it looks like on our group build badge or on the decals wingnut posted he was giving away. (thanks wingnut) or a google search. This may turn into the whole interior green color debate. Which means Ill just go pick the one I like. Thanks.

That's is the correct shade to use.

That, and which ever one is cheaper Laugh [(-D]

As far as my P-400, got started on the 'office' and some basic painting of parts.  No other progress as of yet.

Like Matt, just some cockpit work so far.   As long as the AB was loaded with green I also shot as much of the interior parts as I could.  The nice thing about the Eduard kits have zero ejector pin marks, this can be done while still on the tree.  I picked up another dual combo today tooBig Smile [:D]

Note the big hole cut in the fuselage... I figured a way to get the engine to fit.

Dave:

Some of the Polyscale paints have different "part numbers", but the same FS#. I am fairly certain form my own experience searching that several of the Olive Drab family share this characteristic in the Polyscale line.

But as mph has said, the one you likr or the one you already have may the be the best choice. Just thought I'd pass that tidbit of info along. Cancel the West Coast press conference...

Looking very nice, Marc! The PE detail really stands out. Keep the pics coming
