Oh boy...... Darren I have been trying to get Dee to say that for over 22 years now. She's asleep so at least I have until morning before she reads that. Maybe I should put the kibosh on her computer? I'll never hear the end of that. LOL Could be worse I suppose you all could be referring to me as lower than salamander poop on the bottom of an ant's foot.
Thanks all for the compliments ...... I think.
Roy isn't that just as nostalgic as smacking the wife's behind during the Sunday Serman? It's not the newest most awe inspiring kit but the cool factor of holding and building a kit I had at age 10 is just off the scale for me!
Bondo! Ye scoundral of the Italian Boot! Which way is starboard? Left I think.. anyways I read an article about this fellow who really did this kit up. Added all kinds of stuff and scratched a bunch. A real stellar job and he did just as you suggested. This kit comes with the flaps molded in the open position already. I pondered the idea of redoing them as they are a little off in the proper count. What I decided was not to deviate too much from the original look but to enhance what existed. I thinned down and opened what was there. Then I heard that voice in my head... Do this ... add this.... make it look like this.... I was kinda spooked out! But then I noticed a Wisconsin License plate out front and remembered Frank has been MIA all day.
So coping Franks steller Corsair work I added some scratch made actuators and pullys out of Scrap Photo etch frets and stretched sprue.
Also used some staight pieces to place in the cowling to give the illusion of a support on each side. How Frank did this in 1/48 and drill holes and thread it evenly is still one of the universe's greatest mysteries.
The inside of the cowling was painted the underside color in most F4U-1A's so no zinc interior green whatever there. I purposely let accelerator run to give a dirty look and a little weathering prior to attaching. Well maybe not on purpose but I am not to worried about it.
While lacking the finesse and precision of Frank's incredible efforts it doesn't look too terrible and will be very visable for a change. Kinda nice when you think about how long it takes. That's one of my goals , to worry about what you can see!
