Wasn't that coined by McNamara after Tet? I'm trying to remember, it was so long ago, but there's a connection to that war I think.

On a lighter note; here's a project that I'm working on for the Matchbox Mayhem GB; the Supermarine Stranraer in 1/72. This model is a real gem, and if the quality is any indication, I'm really looking forward to building the Privateer for the War in the Pacific GB, after John and I crawl to the finish line dragging Mach 2 Mariners. At least mine is one color.

But I digress. The Supermarine Stranraer was the last biplane seaplane commissioned by the RAF, and served ably for the Coastal Command all through the war. She also flew for airlines, primarily Canadian into the '60s which as those of you who know me, presents a certain warm feeling.

A three color Matchbox classic, I dunno, the decals probably won't work but I plan to paint the markings anyhow. Always looks better, just a little bit of a chore.

So I spent a little time tarting up the accomodations, and looking at that rear compartment, it seemed a real thirties thing to put in a few long range petrol tanks.

My favorite saying about that headlight has to do with tunnels.  As in, that's not the light at the end of the tunnel you see, it's a train coming the other way.

Going to start on the Beaufighter next week, gotta go work on the daughter's house the rest of the week.

It's the same set of misconceptions that lead people to think that the bright white light up front on the locomotive is a "headlight", in the sense that the crew uses it to see where they are going and swerve to avoid obstacles, rather than what it is; a warning light.

No I have had only a one minor derailment while switching in the yard. A part of one of the cars fell off into the track switch mechanism and tossed the front wheels of the Engine I was in right off the rail.  I had 20 gondolas loaded with steel rebar with only Engine brakes to stop with. I was only doing 10mph but still the ride was on.  I can't imagine seeing that thing coming at you like that.  Most of my scares come from people trying to beat the train which happens every day many times over.  I guess they think we can slow down or something? Dead [xx(]

I was like great a flippin tornado like there isn't enough to watch out for.

Do you ever check your PM's Guy? Laugh [(-D] You must be busy!

Great pics Frank, You optivisor wearing loon. An its about time you got to mowing that lawn, its a damn disgrace i tells ya. As for the corsair, Im loving it. I do the patchy worky effect similarly to you i reckon. Loads of light coats so as not to obliterate the pre-shade? You use a lighter colour for the pre-shade i see. I always go with black or Nato black. Your way is probably a darn site better as id need less paint to cover it. I lighten the centres by just dabbing a drop of white in the cup with a paintbrush and mixing it about.

Aaron, I thought that vid was one of your trains. Christ i bet the driver (s) shat there respective selves. Especially when they noticed the tanker rattling its way towards them.

Ah Great looking Engine Spike 190!  Gotta love adding all that wire to those pistons!

Sorry I got that footage in my E-mail here is the 411 on it.

Train hit by
tornado.  Occurred in Illinois earlier this year -- camera is on rear
locomotive.  Watch, especially to the left -- watch the trees bend, debris
in the air, and you can actually see the tornado pass from right to left.
The trestles was moved out of alignment to the eft 18 inches -- the tank
car was a load of Ethylene Oxide -- nasty stuff ---

I thought it was kinda interesting as We all thought that the momentum of a moving loaded train really was too heavy for a little thing like a tornado to effect.  See a lot of tornado's tracking cross country but have only seen standing cars pushed along the rails before.

Well the fact that the engine stopped rather quickly but not the train was probably just physics.  I wish Nam were here as he could break out the chaulk board and explain it better,

Once the airline ( trainline) was broken the 90lbs of pressure escapes all at once causing all the breaks to emercency apply to maximum stopping force. Since the train was cut apart by the tornado the 2 engines that have more breaking power  dragging just one box car would have stopped within 200ft probably.

My guess is the cars that flipped were all likely empty box cars which are used to give some cover(distance) between the Crew cab and the Hazardous Material tank car in case of accident. Also probably why the tornado was able to flip them right off the rail.  So the rest of the train even though in Emercency braking still had all the momentum and ker powey!

Had the cars remained together this momentum would have just meant the train would have pushed the Engines along. During an Emergency break application the procedure actually requires us to release the engine brakes called actuating or the difference in braking power causes an effect similar to being rear ended at a stop sign by a semi truck doing 55 mph.  The wet rail from the rain also would reduce the friction.

To give some perspective on the forces involved a loaded coal car weighs 120 tons multiply that by a hundred cars give or take and the weight of three engines traveling at 50 mph on flat  dry rail takes every bit of 2 miles  to stop in an emergency sparks flying the whole way.

Engines alone probably 100 to 200 ft to stop. What a diff a few thousands of tons make. Dead [xx(]

Bill from hat I can gather, when the first car jumped tracks and tipped over and broke the train apart, the locos shot forward from being relieved of the extra weight before going into emergency braking and because of the weight relief did stop quickly, however the train itself still had momentum and LOOK OUT!!!!! That's how i saw it anyways lol!

Dang, the sight of that oilcan coming up trailing sparks 'd be with you for a while. At the least, death by corn syrup! What's the 411? It looks like the units that the vid were taken from stopped really quick, and the train just kept a'rolling.

Spike I think it looks great, no worries.

Those food pics set the mood folks.

Hi everyone,

Many apologies for my absence but just been very busy at work and home etc and not had much bench time. I've had a look back at all these posts and theres some great stuff going on, oh and some slightly mad stuff to Blindfold [X-)]! Next time I cut the grass I will rustle up a piccie.

Just a few progress shots of what I've managed.

I was quite pleased with this untill I found some pictures of the real thing, when I do my other Hellcat I think I shall try some extra detailing or maybe some resin.

This is where the magic happens....

Forgive the mess!!

Cheers...

Quilted look? I only see flannel. Yes the same flannel shirt you have always on. I am betting if you have more than 1 shirt it is a duplicate or even triplicate of the same!  FRank!!!! Somebody send that feller to  Walmart! Now Cpt Bondo we know why he could not participate in the Miss Hawaii shirt contest! Blush [:I] But the optivisor pic with the mower is a great touch!

Shock [:O]Cool [8D]

Man now I have an idea on how to rid myself of that annoying Nose hair!   Dee will be pleased as most the time I just use her old leg shaving razors!

The Corsair really looks the part! Thumbs Up [tup] Gonna have to ask how you mix the paint or how you build it up as to not completely erase that preshading.  On of my banes in that process!

You fellows like the Target pics. Good thing I do a nice safe job now!

Now if you think that woulda made you poop yer panties then you must first ask yourself these two questions?

Why is Frank lighting the grill with a can of gasoline?

Why is his fire extinquisher a tiny squirt gun on the porch?

Those brave crew are the real meaning of fear!

What's that?  Confused [%-)]

I did some work on the FAA Corsair today, finishing the bottom colors.  Over the preshade, I sprayed a darkened version of the sky color around the exhaust areas, gun muzzles, shell ejection ports, and oil coolers.  I also lightly sprayed it over the pre-shaded areas.  After that, I sprayed some thinned sky out of the bottle and lightly blended the darker areas into the center of the panels for a shaded effect.  Finally, I added some white to the sky color and sprayed it in a cloud pattern into the center of the panels, and also blended the other colors together.

The weathering to come will help finalize the blending and reduce the "quilted" look to the panels.  Thumbs Up [tup]

Lewbud have you been digging in Dee's closet again? Mischief [:-,] I wonder where that Nurse outfit went off too! Laugh [(-D]

No food to show off here. Noise from the fireworks just woke me up.  Missed most the Holiday but have the night off as they don't want to pay the overtime.

5 engines 120 cars 8700 tons, 8100 feet long through downtown Houston last night and no relief crew today so just got it all put away in the nick of time. Would have been a mutany to block all those roads on the holiday! Dead [xx(]

Well hope everyone had a great holiday!  Sometimes I think getting a good nap is a grand celebration in itself! Alien [alien]

John- Great to see you, it's been a long time!  Sorry your shoulder is taking so bloody long to heal, hope it's completely healed soon. Thumbs Up [tup]

Buddy- ACK!!!  I feel an illness coming on as well, better send that nurse over. Mischief [:-,]  I checked in with the NRO, and so far nothing has shown up on their photos.  It appears that the CAG takes TSWSIE's security VERY seriously, and has taken measures to conceal it's identity from prying eyes.  Perhaps it's time to send in the Special Task Force again...

Gentleman,

I have it on good authority that several TR-1's and a SR-71 that has been pulled out of retirement are headed towards merry olde England.  Their task is to find any evidence of home remodelling going on.  The NRO will then feed said info through their black boxes in the hope that the CAG's secret lair will be secret no more.

Per Captain's orders here's a pic of lunch (sorry dozed off after)

I didn't feel well, so I went to see the ship's nurse.

Dinner will consist of similar fare.  May need to see the nurse again.Mischief [:-,]
