Thanks Joe. I'm going to take part of tomorrow to run down to the LHS tomorrow before heading to the airfield (I'm on standby in the afternoon) and see about getting some needed shades of paint i need. Still wrestling with the friggin compressor, but at least i can use the rattle cans until i get it fixed. I'm ready to get to the bench. I've yet to start, but i've already cleared the spot on the bench, i'm that psyched!

At least in the downtime that i have here in the maintenance shed, at least i have a chance to catch up on all i've missed. Seeing the other P-40 here come to life is really got my blood pumping!Big Smile [:D]

Warmest regards,

Roger

Well guys, I humbly submit my aircraft for this GB: Ken Taylor's P-36 as it might have looked before he valiantly hipped in and shot down aseveral D3A Vals. Historically he has been credited with 2 kills at Pearl, but recent Japanese records show that he actually may have shot down 4. Either way, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. Mr. Taylor passed away in 2006.

It's the 1./48 Academy kit...a nice kit,if a little sparse. My first resin was used here, the Legend set. What a great resin kit. Itw as easy to use and seemed like high quality resin. Unfortunately the IP dislodged after I installed it into the sewn up fuselage, to be buried forever. I didn't feel like opening up the fuse after I had the seems smoothed.

It went smooth again from there...until the flat coat. I tried to remedy a bad batch of Polyscale Flat Clear (I had a major disaster previouslywith this bottle) by  heavily diluting with windex. It worked nicely on a test piece, but for some reason came out chalky again. The bottle has since been tossed in file 13 and a few new bottles ordered for future builds.

Here is Mr. Taylor's bird:

Thanks for looking and thank you, joe, for the great GB once again. I'd like to participate in next year's Pearl Harbor GB as well, and am already excited about it. If I didn't have a full list in the "To Build" stack, I'd build a B5N for this GB.

I'm still looking forward to see what else you guy's are cooking up.

Now there's a really gorgeous build! I think i see what you mean by it being a little chalky, but i do hope that i don't run into that same problem myself.

In that second picture you posted, it looks like you got the vents (holes) in the gun barrels? Is that part of the resin kit? Or do i need to look into a new pair of glasses?

Either way, my hat is off to an excellent subject!Cool [8D]

Warmest regards,

Roger

Thanks, Desert Rat.

Believe it or not,  the gun barrels are plastic from the kit. To highlight the cooling jacket I did a trick I read from another modeler: paint the barrel flat black, then grind some pencil lead and roll the flat black barrel between your thumb and index finger, which should have a little graphite powder on it. It gives it a little more "metallic" look than from just paint alone, and helps to highlight the crevices in any given part.

Unfortunately the chalkiness is a little to much. Since these planes were not at war (until the moment of the attack), they were kept in relatively nice, clean condition, so "heavy weathering" or fading wouldn't be very accurate.

That's a really neat trick! I'll have to see how that works for me when i get to that point. Thanks for the tip, Mucker!

I do have a color question though, with my build. Not just the P-40, but most all aircraft from that era with the OD scheme, i'm seeing a bit of a discrepany with the underside color. In the instruction sheet, if calls for a grey underside (but convieniently it does not list any kind of FS code) but in most all the reference materials that i have in my library, it shows more of a white underside as best as i can tell. I'm a little uncertain which is correct. Does anyone have any insight to this? Question [?]

Warmest regards,

Roger

The underside gray in these schemes is refered to as "Neutral Gray", sometimes #43 Neutral Gray (to go with #41 Olive Drab). The FS # is 36173.

I wouldn't get too stressed out about the O.D., as pretty much an shade you can come up with would fit within the large range of weathering this was subject to. Some of the old color photos show it faded into a brownish color!

I'm good on the OD green, it's just the underside i'm not certain on. Guess i'm trying to decide on sticking with the neutral grey, or go with what my references seem to be telling me. Decisions, decisions.....

Roger

Hi guys, I wanted to clear up a question that was posed on the Aircraft Forum about "Mucker's" Ken Taylor P36.  I mentioned in my Val build that it was shot down by Ken Taylor in a P40.  I wanted to verify that on that day, he was actually flying a P40 and not a P36.  On the website Pearlharborhero.net  there are some good pictures and articles about Ken and Geroge.  Even though they are pictured at times with a P36 in the background, it was indeed P40's that they flew.  The story goes that their planes were destroyed at Wheeler so they drove 10 miles to Haleiwa Landing Field to get a couple of P40's.

Do the best job you can then be proud of your efforts.

I guess I will have to find a P-40 kit now!Whistling [:-^](Yet another excuse to buy a kit!)

I'll have to check out that web site. I always enjoy expanding my horizons on history. Thank you for the info.

dec 7 1941.  the uss arizona went down with over 1200 crew.  today it is said she still sheds tears for the crew that died without knowing they were at war.

this is the minihobbies 1/700 uss arizona.  it has rails, cranes, and catapults of metal.  i did not do this ship nor her crew justice.  this is not one of my more impressive builds.  however every drop of glue, every piece of pe, every piece of plastic, and every drop of paint went on with the memory of who it is to represent.

never to be forgotten.

Joe, more than the ship (which is nice) I like the sentiment that goes into your builds. THis model has a lot of meaning and displays it well. I get the chills when I think about all of those men on this ship who went to an early grave. But these give way to the feelings of pride when I think back at how our country banded together, made sacrifices and found a way to endure the long, hard years of the War.

Two thumbs up on your build, and an extra thumb for the GB idea!

Good Job on the arizona cant wait until i get mine started the only thing i seen was from the articles of the paint scheme that 3 of the 4 guns were painted red on top u got all 4.If whatever u went by shows all 4 I would like to see what u based that on so i can see it for reference.Everything i have seen has only 3 of them red.

sorry for the late reply.

i dont doubt my scheme is incorrect.  i will have to recheck and then repaint if needed.

for those who are entered into this build there is one month to go.  at least for the "end date".  i encourage you to finish regardless if you finish by dec 7 or not.  dont let it end up as one of the unfinished never to be finished types.

to this event also the build is now closed to new entries.  i do this so no one tries to rush through from entry to finish.

Joe, indeed, it is a very nice build !

Thumbs Up [tup]

A little update on my project. I finished panels scribbing on the wings and attached top wings to the fuselage. Pretty good fit (and it is an old 1/48 Monogram kit of P-40B).

I put Wheels and UC details from a resin set - mostly because of lack of Wheel Wells on original kit.
Still a lot of work but this kit looks like a hot P-40 already ! I hope I will not damage any parts on a final approach Smile [:)] Pictures will be availale after this Weekend - plan for a primer coat

it took me a bit more time than I thought....

Flaps are in place  - I put a wing structure on the upper wing and leave flaps in down position. I cat off the cawling flaps and put some tubes to simulate radiators.

On the nose I put a resin to build inlets - I made holes and placed the nose into the fuselage

Here is a kit as stands today

only the upper wing is glued to the fuselage at this point

Tomorrow will be a putty filling and sanding soon - a lot of sanding.... its a Monogram Sad <img src=" border="0" />

Hey Joe, I'm really sorry but I'm going to have to drop out of the GB.  My bench is just about clear, but even if assembly starts tonight, that leaves me with just 18 more days to build my P-36A.  I would prefer not to have to rush the build as I really want to do the kit justice.

A week till Friday the 7th! The B-12 is mostly together, I'm researching the final color scheme. There was probably one B-12 at Bellows Field, in the 86th, but I haven't been able to find a photo of any at any Hawaiian fields on that day, period, so have a little mercy. After '38 they would have been painted silver, with tail feathers, and eventually OD/NG.

I've learned a lot about Bellows, and am planning a trip to all the forgotten fields sometime soon, maybe in 2011. Sorry no pics but I'll do some this weekend.

I know it's been awhile since i've posted my progress, but it seems i'll be cutting it close here (if not overdueSigh [sigh]) but i've got the wings and fuselage together, and i should be getting ready for paint here soon. One thing about the Monogram kit is that those intakes just above the nose are covered. I really want to cut those out so that it's open mouthed, but i'm trying to get my hands on something that will carve em out without breaking the dividers (or whatever they are called here). Sad to say, but i have a very small amount of tools here, and i'm afraid to just take an exacto knife to it. But hopefully i should have some new pictures to post here soon.

Warmest regards,

Roger
