Well, I am guessing this build is over. But as there is no Airline thread, then I will just post here..

Here is my latest effort..

Originally built and painted in the United scheme, I decided to strip the paint and do it in the Delta scheme..

I have so far only layed down the white, and painstakingly cut out the Delta with a stanly knife, and then sprayed.. Needs a little touch up. But happy as I don't have decals and wanted to do everything by hand..

Hi all!

Sorry I dropped off the face of the earth, but last year was brutally awful to my wife and I Black Eye [B)].  Here is the Christmas letter we sent out chronicalling the year, Sorry the pix didn't come out, but I didn't feel like uploading to Photobucket :

All good things must come to an end...and so has our good fortune.  With an ailing truck causing Rich to have to rescue Karen on more than one occasion, we decided it was time for a new vehicle.  No sooner had we signed on the dotted line for our GMC Acadia on December 15th, when a torrent of misfortune came our way.

Ready...Take a big breath...First the microwave went kaput; closely followed by the aquistat (the what?) on the furnace (Merry Christmas with no Ho, Ho, Ho, Hot water or He, He, He, Heat!); The curtain rod over the sliding glass door in the kitchen mysteriously fell off the wall; Karen's wall of clothes tumbled to the floor when the closet organizer decided the curtain rod was having all the fun; Then a tree fell on the mailbox (helped by Rich, the neighbor and a chain saw...don't even go there!); Speaking of mail...Rich went on the computer to check emails and found the monitor had gone black - after three hours on the phone with Dell "Support" (Yah, right!) the foreign technician said "I think your monitor is broken"; While walking up the driveway after clearing snow for the umpteenth time, Rich found a brake pad from the Pontiac laying on the ground; and Karen goes to the bathroom late one night during yet another snow/rain storm and feels water dripping on her head (Hmmm...there's definitely something wrong here?!) Ah yes, the seven year old roof is leaking and it was only the 1st of February!  Then things really got bad.

In April we discovered that our seven year old Greyhound Jack was terminally ill with severe liver disease.  We did everything we could to make him comfortable and happy in his final days.  On May 10th we had to let him go, he was five days shy of his eighth birthday.  Jack was with us for only 3 ½ years but he gave us and many others a lifetime of love. He was personally responsible for at least one family deciding to adopt Greyhounds and was truly a soul that will never be forgotten.  We thank our Greyhound friends and their owner's for helping us cope with Jack's illness and death.

The chasm that was left by Jack's passing was too much for us and by late June we had to do something about it.  To that end we made two decisions; the first was to go on a dive trip in order to gain perspective on the years events.  We made plans to go to Bonaire - an Island in the Dutch Antilles off the coast of Venezuela - at the end of July.  The 2nd picture, taken on that trip, is a Frogfish, a weird creature roughly the size of a baseball with a big "foot" and a bigger mouth.

The second decision, made after intensive soul searching, was to adopt another Greyhound.  One Saturday we looked at nine different dogs.  The eighth dog was a male named Kool (racing name: Starz Kool).  Picture Karen standing with Kool, Rich knelt down and asked her if she minded that Kool, like Jack, was red fawn colored.  While Karen was answering, Kool adopted Rich by leaping into his arms from four feet away and smothering him with kisses.  Rich cried, Karen cried and Kool wagged his tail very satisfied with his choice.  It is uncanny how Kool channels Jack...there are things he does that only Jack had done.  He brings us joy and tears and we heal some more.

In August, Rich's kidney problems resurfaced after 12 years.  A six millimeter stone (that's about ¼ ") rolled around and around until Rich underwent Ultrasonic Lithotripsy to blast it away.  Three days after the procedure, some clogged plumbing sent Rich to the Hospital in agony as Karen seriously contemplated drinking all the Scotch in the house!  In September Karen had a problem with her right foot that required three Cortisone injections.  In October, we went on another dive trip, this time to Roatan - an Island off the coast of Honduras.  Again, great diving, food and friends helped us heal a bit more.

One thing that Jack taught us is to live in the moment, so we decided to add to our brood by adopting our third Greyhound.  Abby (racing name: Abby's Trouble) is a little peanut of a girl weighing only 50 pounds and is three years old.  Abby raced in Florida and came to Maine in November.  We picked her up on the day after Christmas and are working on the logistics of having five animals in the house.

So, you can see why I dropped out of just about everything! My United 777 never got started, it still sits in the basement with all the reference material on my desk.  Hope everyone had a good build!Make a Toast [#toast]

Yes, I'm aware of your infidelity! Wink [;)] I'm over there too, if you haven't figured it out already, you can look for the guy on the airliner forum who has the same avatar I use here.

And yes, I did have a great Thanksgiving; thank you for asking.

I know what you're talking about! Still, your daughter and I had it lucky, my younger brothers are twins and took almost a year to sleep through the night.

General update: the reason the 707 wasn't finished was that one of my kids accidentally knocked it onto the floor, springing the wings loose and knocking one stab off completely. The fuselage seam also was sprung, so I had to reglue and resmooth. At this point the engines are built and will go on tonight, and I am actually still planning to get this bird done before the end of the year.

The Blue Angels Heavy Lifter got smashed in the same incident, so I dropped out of that build. The good news is, I got a new one from Squadron for a few bucks.

The pics will be posted after the first of the year, but the build will be finished on time. I mean it! How stupid would it look for the founder of the build to get not even one airliner built all year!

I'll come back tonight and post those long-promised pics of my new little girl...one of them is only three weeks old and a complete hoot!

Neil--

Thanks...I'll do so tomorrow when I can get the pics back from my wife.

As for airplane progress...put a small (especially for me!) amount of bondo on the 707 this evening, and closed the fuselage of my Heavy Lifters build, the Blue Angels Lockheed Constellation. Tomorrow the 707 gets sanding and glass, and then it's off to the paint shop, assuming those two steps go well.

This one will make it two of each, Frank. Specifically, boy, girl, boy, girl. Our other three are 13, 12 and 9 and they're very excited...and all old enough to change diapers! BWAHAHAHA!

Gentlemen--

I'm happy to report that....

IT'S A GIRL!!!

As for my 707, I'll be getting the stabs and canoe on tonight; I have to be careful with the cockpit glass (needs shims) but I'll probably have that on too.

Neil--

Congrats on the medals!

Yeah, my Packers went down today...the good news is I got the wings on the 707 and they're almost seamless. I also cleaned up some parts and will attach the "canoe" ventral stabilizer shortly.

As for the little one, we expect to know later this month.

Hello fellow liner mates;

I've been out for a while too. Still looking for a job and kids and life issues but I'm still here. I haven't really worked on anything new lately. I did recently come back from a contest in Kansas City. I took a Silver medal for my B727 and a Bronze for my Air India B777. I'm quite happy.

Frank you project looks fabulous. The St Marteen landing is down right realistic. I've always wanted to go there and have a go at plane spotting.

Simon I'll be looking forward to some more of your great work.

CD. Life issues definitely are priority. Congrats on the 4th child. Do you know the gender? I'll be anxious to see the Braniff jet completed.  I'm an Eagles fan. were now like 2-3? Boohoo [BH] Bummer.

What I have in the works contamplating are two kits. One is the Minicraft Dc-8 71 and an A Model Aero 145 civilian utility/passenger prop job.  I'm also considering doing a Revell 1/144 B747 too. Gotta check the funds and I have birthday coming up soon....mmmmmmParty [party]

regards Neil

Frank, that is just so totally AWESOME! I hope you make a mint for coming up with it.

Sorry I've been gone so long, gentlemen. Lots of scout stuff, a magazine issue, some out of town visitors and...some OB appointments. Our fourth child is on the way, due near the end of February.

I'll be working on my Braniff bird during the Packer game tomorrow.

Thanks Simon... Smile [:)]

    I hope nobody puts their tools up because of me showing a different way to displaying something.   Using those mirrors, ANYONE can make their model come to life like that; and it's a lot easier than building an entire one also.      Wink [;)]

   Hey Neil,

   You done an excellent job with the Dash-8; and the new nose section looks a LOT better than what came molded with it. Smile [:)]

Frank;

That's simply an amazing effect you've created.  It looks like it's actually flying. I love the over land set up too.  You can't really tell that there is only half a model there.

One thing, it sort of looks a bit low for a highflying passover.  It could be that the picture isn't quite conveying the distance.  Not a  critisizm an observation.

My hats off to you.

I hadn't seen any posts here in a while and wondered if the GB sort of fizzled out.  I'm working on an A model Aero 145 twin engine kit. 1/72 scale. I'll post some pics soon

I've built that Dash 8 and it is a dog of a kit. Lot's of filler and lot's of sanding and reshaping. The horizontal stabs are really bad. Mine broke in two. Here's a photo of one I built a while ago. It's not an airliner but it is a cool looking plane once completed.

Cheers folks.

Thanks Simon, Smile [:)]

Max: From all the inacuracies that particular kit suffers from, you probably done the most merciful thing! Wink [;)]

    I fooled around and finished another build this afternoon, so I thought I should go ahead and post it here.    Had a lot of fun and learned some new things about mounting technique, so enjoy the pictures. [:)

Hi Guys

 Still here. have been refurbishing ( painting and carpeting ) my study. So now I have a nice comfortable place to work ! ( on kits of course )

 I've been a bit slow of late as my two year old ( he of the damaged VC 10  - Max I feel your pain) discovered my old hornby trains , so we've set those up and spent hours gazing at them running around, at the expense of aero modelling.

 Anyway - I've become a little discouraged with the Trident - had some problems with the midnight blue on the tail.

 They're all sitting there though, taunting me , so I expect some more progress soon.

 Frank - Your son-in law's duty is surely appreciated. We aussies have a contingency over there too, I think all the air traffic control at baghdad is courtesy of the RAAF.

Cheers

Hey guys,

So my Dash 8 is a twisted pile of plastic in the garbage.

I haven't evejoyed this build at all. Last week my son broke off the horizontal stabalizer. I was ready for paint but I glued it back on and refilled and sanded the crack that was left. Well today I was painting and I had just finished and the thing dropped to the floor, breaking off the stabalizer... again. When I held the broken piece up it was going to be very hard to fix as the crack was large this time. The plastic kind of twisted. This thing had already taken for ever and now I'm set back again. I snapped for a split second but long enough to rip that model to shreds. It felt awesome in the moment. Now I'm sad. Ah well.

So I'm out.

John;

Thanks for the kudos. Yes I suppose back in the 60's and 70's with the somewhat flamboyant styles that may have worked. Remember Calder's (?) artfully painted DC-8's? And National Airlines' "Fly Me" campaign?

Frank;

Many thanks for the kind words. I'm quite happy with the NM effects. I have another B727 that I'd like to try in American Airlines. I'd like to to them in their old style markings. That would be a challenge.

I hope all is going well with other's builds.

Looks like a real nice finish on the nm and the white, Bable.  What airport is honest enough to paint it's ramp like that?

Here's my finished Pan Am B727-200.  I'm pleased with the build. I did some weathering with pastels, oils and I used a graphite pencil to outline the control surfaces. They were a bit subdued until I applied a coat of future. Then they poped out nicely.  I made the landing lights with a Waldron punch and die set and some bare metal foil.  The base is one I found at a thrift store for a dollar and I found a nice sheet in the scrapbooking section of my local arts and crafts store for 79 cents which I cut to fit over the middle section. I think it adds a nice touch. I hope you enjoy.

Next I'm going to work on my Minicraft Delta DC-8-71.
