does anyone have any tips on working with fuirmodel metal tracks, i'm drilling with my pin vise and fileing them , but after 20 links my fingers are already starting to hurt , there's gota be a better way. altho after dry fitting what i have done i can already see these are going to look awsome just a lot of work

ok after much pain for my poor fingers trying to hold the tracks while drilling them i finaly figured out the easy way to do this , for anyone else working with these tracks save your fingers and try this , these tracks have 2 holes in them

get some small tweezers that will fit in the holes

then drill

tada , much increased productivity Big Smile [:D]

Sorry for spamming the thread with a 3rd post in a row but I’m just too excited about these, they're awesome Big Smile [:D]

started to test fit my tracks to see how they looked , decided i didn't want to start to cut the wire to pin them right away, so i had a look around to see what i could use and found these

After seeing that i decided to cut down one of the pins to get a better idea of the final look.

humm real close to what it should look like , I’ll have to hit the fabric store tomorrow see if i can't find pins with just a lil bit smaller heads they would be perfect and much more solid than flimsy wire, not to mention the pin head gives a nice area to apply glue.

Now that i tried these i don’t think I’ll ever be able to use the 1 piece rubber tracks again, these are just too nice even if they require a lot of work.

about 75% of the right side tracks done, and nothing on the left side....i have 7 hours spent on these tonight and i just noticed its 3am , time flies when you're busy [:0]

For all you DML Panther builders that are using the kit tracks:

http://jadarhobby.waw.pl/e_portal/c_product_info.php?manufacturers_id=10&products_id=3992&PHPSESSID=77fa985886fe6ac139420dea8acfeb94

Yep, replacement PE Track guidehorns with holes.Tongue [:P]- At $6 USD way cheaper than whole new links.

Won me a DML 'Kursk' D as club raffle prize, so I bought the Part
fenders: http://jadarhobby.waw.pl/e_portal/c_product_info.php?manufacturers_id=10&products_id=4018&PHPSESSID=77fa985886fe6ac139420dea8acfeb94

skirts: http://jadarhobby.waw.pl/e_portal/c_product_info.php?manufacturers_id=10&products_id=3991&PHPSESSID=77fa985886fe6ac139420dea8acfeb94 and

grills: no link for pic, to go with it.

List price for all 3 is 53 PLN (Polish Zloty) say USD$13.25. When I add a barrel it will still be way cheaper than an Aber or Eduard fit outTongue [:P]

Oh by the way, I'll shelve the LVTP resurrection and the Achilles build (sorry Shermie, I'll get back to OD) if you guys'll let me inEvil [}:)]

Nice tracks PantherLehr. They look real nice, something for me to consider next time. My Eduard barrel and tamiya tracks will be here Monday.

a little more progress today , found some new tricks. i was on the right track with my sewing pin idea last night , i decided to cut off the heads and pointy end off them leaving me with stiff straight steel pins. if i cut them a bit shorter than what is needed and don't file them, the jagged ends seem to dig into the softer metal tracks and they're hard to get out , no need for glue Big Smile [:D]

to make my pins quickly i took some masking tape that happened to be exactly the right width then i lined up the pins side by side on it, once i had a bunch i just put another peice of tape to hold them firmly (note this image was my first idea you need to have the head of the pin further away from the edge of the tape)

once i had my taped pins i put them in a vise flush with the edge of my tape and then took my dremel with a diamond cutting disk and choped them off, then pulled the tape apart and had this.

now i just took each pin and pushed them in the holes, nice and solid.

btw is this interesting to anybody? am i going into too much detail on how i'm doing things?

i was just thinking some more , if i had used real sewing needles and cut them off in the middle of the thread hole leaving me with a Y shaped pin then pushing them in with another needle and nailling it gently to spread the 2 top "legs" after its in place it would hold even better. btw for anyone that is going to try my tip i used a #66 drill bit but a little smaller would be even better

well i guess you could make them out of those but i'd be worried about it when comes time to paint them , the cardboard might soak up all the paint making them look different compared to painted plastic , you would probably be better off using sheets of stylene(sp?). as for the measurements do you know if the jadgpanter used the same skirts as the panther? anyway the ones on my panther g late are 36mm x 18mm

I woud build them out of styrene, and they should be the same dimensions as the Panther G.

PantherLehr,
appreciate the tips, and i don't think the detail is too much.

BUT
i thought we were starting December 1 !! Big Smile [:D]Big Smile [:D]
w/ 4 weeks before the build 'starts', i am still waiting for my greatmodels goodies,
and really falling behind!
have the rest of you guys started stuff too?

i am just joking folks.
i know you are all itching to get started, and you have to work when you get time.
but i have to get a Pzkpfw IV Ausf D and a 1/32 Hase Me163 (w/ Eduard PE)
off the bench first, so i don't think i will be doing much before the 1st.

looks like PantherLehr will be starting a second kit by then!

Nah, just starting on the "tedious" time consuming items , tracks and road wheels mostly, no worries about me starting another kit before dec 1st , heck i'll be lucky if i finish before the end date at the speed i build models. The painting takes me forever to do because i don't really have the time to setup my airbrush, paint and clean it on weeknights, so that leaves me weekends (when i'm lucky, some weekends i get nothing done Dead [xx(])

All I plan to do is wash and rinse the kit, so it will be ready to start. The rest of my goodies should arrive today! I was afraid they weren't going to come up with the Eduard barrel. Sigh [sigh] I want to get my Panzer III finished before the start date. Haha, yeah right.

Sounds like you're all doing well. I'm still struggling with my "other" project. I swear, one of these days, I'm gonna build one oob just to see what a relaxing build is like! lol

Max, I appreciate your tracks tips as I'll probably be using Friul ones myself. Especially after seeing how nice they look. What kind of pins did you wind up using and where did you get them? I'm wondering about leaving the heads on. I might be up in the night, but it seems to me the in pics I've seen of the 1 to 1 models, at least one end of the "pin" looks just about like that. I assume the other end (inside ?) would have a nut on it.

Nothing really special about the pins, i just went to a fabric store (that was a experience in itself, there where about 45-50 women in there not a single other male shopper in sight) and picked up 26mm dressmakers pins (that’s what’s on the box), pretty standard stuff, they only had one size but in different lengths, they cost 1.99$ cdn for about 75pins. I guess the heads come down to personal preference. You know i didn't even bother trying to find a reference picture to compare, i just didn't want to use wire, i'll have to check the pictures i have. I just might change my mind again depending on what the pictures looks like

Looking at it a little closer, I think the heads on the real deal were smaller (scale wise) and flatter, so my previous idea may be bogus.

Just got my Eduard barrel and think it looks pretty cool. Just curious, am I suppossed to sand it? It looks kinda rough, is that natural? I'm new with these aluminum barrels. Confused [%-)] Thanks.

hi guysSmile [:)]
for the first time i ordered some ali barrels the other day. this morning i got my jordi r panther g and tiger barrels, and am not sure whether i should be disappointedDisapprove [V]Question [?]...
the barrel itself looks fine but there is lots of flash on the separate muzzle which has to be attached.
is this normal? do i just sand it off? do i attach it with ordinary cyano glue??Question [?]
also, does anyone else make these barrels with muzzles already attached?
many thanks in advance.
regards,
nick
