Great deal Chris, looks like we will be building the same kit. I don't have a lot of experience either with p/e, but it should be interesting. Mine got a little tweaked during delivery also.

Mine were packed with a cardboard backing in a ziplock style bag but were still damaged.

Tigerman, I can't remember where, but I've read that the tracks are supposed to finally touch down on the fourth set of road wheels (which would be the second set of outside wheels).

Oh, and thanks to all for letting us non-1/35 Panther modelers join in!

heres the diferent track sags
the first one is on a Panther D

the second is on a Panther G steel wheel

the third is a Panther G at Aberdeen as in Muzzelflashes photo (rusted tracks)

but the Forth picture is of a Panther G that was captured and used by the British, it must be moving or on rough ground becouse the tracks are toutching the last wheel only

so in the end its up to you what you want the tracks to look like, i will just look at a photo i like and copy it

all the photos are from http://www.achtungpanzer.com/pz4.htm#panther

Yeah Jon, they did come with cardboard backing, but they are so frail, they may have become a little damaged in transit. I agree Chris, they should have packed them better, maybe putting cardboard on both sides of the fret.

Those first two photos are exactly what I was saying about the sag touching the second roadwheel (maybe should have said first outside wheel, hard to tell if its touching, but close)

For all you Panther lovers out there, if you haven't seen it in the newest FSM, on page 79, Hobbyland has an Academy 1/25 Panther G for $35.99 retail is $50. This is a pre-order. I don't know a thing about it, but if it's like some of their newer offerings, it may be worth it. Heck, you can't get a 1/35 for that price!

The germans dropped Zimmerit anyway towards the end of the war? Due to "more sophisticated" anti tank weaponry, that's what I have read anyway.

Frosty,
What book is it to which you're refering?? Where did you find it? It sounds interesting!
Thanks

Bill

Bill:
the full title is ARMOR CONVERSIONS AND DETAILING PROJECTS, and it's a Kalmbach publication (#12166, i think), 104 pages chock full of fun projects. it's $15.95, and if u click on the Kalmbach Publishing Co. heading under "Contact us" in the green panel on the left side of your screen, then go to "Books" or search Armor detailing, u can find it there....
i think u'll like it !

best wishes,

Back to the track sag story, I'm looking through Schiffer Military History Volume 37, Panther, and more than half the pix show the tracks touching down on the 4th set o' wheels (2nd set o' outside wheels). I reckon it really just depends on the physical situation the vehicle was in at the moment the pic was snapped, as well as any number of variables at the time.
As Jon said, it'd probably be best to choose a particular vehicle you have references for and go with that.
Or just go with what ya like!

On the Academy 1/25 Panther G: it is unfortunately just a refurbishment of their previous Tamiya copy, with some added G-specific items (upper hull, mantlet), and some very disappointing vinyl belt trax (poorly detailed and very stiff). I had a good rummage through the box the other day, with the intention to buy, but I had to let it go. Too bad, too...woulda been nice to have a G to go with my ol' A and Jagdpanther.

brian-sama:
hey, we can play too, isn't that great ?
i'm thinking ersatz m10 in 1/72 or 1/76 (might as well use the airfix panther since i won't have to saw off the commander's cupola and spare fuel tanks on that model; altho' i'll actually have to buy another kit if i go that route, it'll still cost less than the simplest PE set for a 1/35 version !)...
did u get to work ok on saturday after ur late nite on friday ?

Frostygirl;

Thanks for the info. It really sounds like something I'd like to look at. I'll look into it.

Two questions --

1) are we each going to be adding our build-up stories to a web page, with pics of progress, stories of amputated fingers and all that good stuff? That seems to have been the intention with the big Tiger build-up.

2) Totally unrelated to 1), does any one out there have good photo references for the Panthers of 5SS Panzer in Hungary in January 1945? It's an unusual vertical stripe pattern. I had a source with good pix of them, but I don't remember which one it is now, and can't find the pix. Sad [:(]

This would be Operation "Konrad," the Budapest-relief effort.

Gee, I just thought of this, I was going to do an ambush scheme for my Panther, but that was late war and I have the early G! When did the ambush scheme first appear? Oh well, I guess that I could always do a tri-color camo. Sad [:(]

If you click on the thread in "Wacky Nashorn color schemes" and click on German armor, you will find some interesting photos of Panthers. One of them shows a Panther in a townsquare. I clicked on the Ardennes part of it.

Well Larry, I'm guessing after sixty years, probably, not. There does seem to be some nice repo jobs though, or at least realistic on some. I thought that pic of the night fighting G was cool.

you can paint it that way if the tank and scheme were in use at the same time.
A panzer II that survived until '45 could be painted in ambush but you wouldn't see a late Panther G in Dunkelgrau.

Don’t forget me... I want in on the build!!!

If you guys want you can send me your pics until Claymore gets his site up. I also have a website that i would be more than happy to post pics on. I have not had much time to do much with the site during the semester (i am a busy little beaver) but finals are over on the 12th of December. I will be starting my build then, but I'm sure i can find time to post your pics if you send them to me.

My hotmail account can handle 2 meg storage, so please make sure that the size of the files you send are not over 1.5 meg. my email is esarmor@hotmail.com, or you could just click on the email icon under my post.Big Smile [:D]. it might be best to let me know that you will be sending me an email so i can make sure that my account has room. I wont be able to handle it if everyone emails me their pics at once.

cheers,
edog
