Panzer88. I really like what you did with the camoThumbs Up [tup]

Here is more progress. This is my first attempt at free-handing. I'm not really thrilled but not too terribly disappointed either.

Thanks for looking. As always, any comments or suggestions are more than welcome.

WOW guys!! Thanks for the positive kudos on the camo. To answer the burning question, no masking was used, all free hand. I used Tamiya acrylics strictly for this one, they offer a lot of control and look good to boot. Well thanks for the positive compliments, that just motivated me to get my butt into gear and start finishing this big cat up. Thanks again guys.

Well guys, I'm gonna join up and start posting until SMJ gets around to adding me. It's Dragon's 1/72 Armor Pro Gruppe Ferhman Tiger 1 (full name at top of page 30) This was done over the period of like a week, I painted the camo the night before last. I'm kinda proud of it, being the first time I ever freehanded camo. I know its not perfect (when I airbrushed it, I forgot to insert the low-flow tip thus the lines are a bit big. DUH!) Well, here are the pics. One last thing, how should I rust up the muffler/exhaust? Thanks and questions/comments are appreciated! (Warning! Lots of pics!)

Graham aka Boba Fett

(note: here are the mufflers. Any tips?)

Thanks.

Wow, alot of activity as several builds race to complete in the last week of the GB.  Now, all we need is an update from Espins and his Panther D.

Firesmacker:  Lookin good.  Panthers are rockin this GB.  Lets see it with decals, tools and some weathering. Keep up the good work.

Boba:  a single post that could be titled "A week in the life of Graham".  Gotta hand to you braille scalers.  My eyesight has gone downhill to the extent that 1/35 builds are sometimes quite fiddly.  1:72?  Naah!  You going to do etched brass tool clamps?  Evil [}:)]  Looking forward to seeing it finished.

Nope! I am just using the stock etch and I didn't even use all the parts on the exhaust tops! I don't usually build braille but the kit was only 15 bucks, considering the Hasegawa version is like 12.99, I think I got a deal! The other thing that lured me to the kit was the photoetch. This is only my second time with the stuff (The first being another Dragon armor pro 1/72 Bradly) so I couldn't pass it up!

Nice kit there Firesmacker and Boba!  I have the big brother of the Fehrman Tiger in the stash from the Dragon Expo a couple years ago, thanks to one Jeff Herne picking it up for me and hand delivering it.  I'm still years away from that one though....

I made a large leap forward today, applying my first whitewash to a kit.  I really hate Modelmaster Whites since I can never get them to cover anything properly.  Then I realized most whitewashes were field applied and probably not uniform anyways, so I'll go with it!  The painting instructions called for the Dunkelgelb to show in patches, and it isn't from chipping of the surface.  It needed some artistic liscense since there was only a profile shot, hopefully it is reasonably accurate.

I can't find my most of the pics of the plain Dunkelgelb, so I'll skip straight to the white:

I have to wait for my oil wash to dry on the tracks then some wathering can begin!  Needless to say, I'm relying on Doog's current whitewashed King Tiger for some tricks on how to weather this kitty...  Smile [:)]

Yeah, there is definitely a lot of great stuff going on here lately!

Boba, your little Tiger is looking good!  Camo looks nice, but I don't know what to tell you about the exhausts.  Depends on what paint or pigments you've got on hand.  I say just paint it a medium rusty color, give it a dark wash and then highlight with a lighter rust color???  I used pastels on the exhausts on my Jagdpanther, but I don't know if you've got any.

Glamdring, winter whitewash Panther?  Oh, you're a brave man!!  Whitewash on zimmerit just scares the heck out of me, but you're doing a great job with yours!  Can't wait to see it done.

Well, I have to post these pic as I'm leaving in one hour.  Going out of town until next Sunday so NOOO work on my little Jagdkitty until then.  Fortunately the hull is practically done and all that is left is the wheels and tracks.  I should be able to crank them out in the last 2-3 days of the GB!!  (crossing fingers!)  Here's how I will have to leave it:

I'll still pop in during the next week, just can't add any updatesSad [:(]

Yup. Have chalk pastels. They are in earth tones but I have a really nice one that when mixed with a little brown/black looks just like rust! Should the whole thing be rusted up? And also, should the muffler guard have rust on the inside/outside? Thanks!

I think I'm going to call this one done. I never tried to weather before so I am going with the "Less is more" school of thought. Thanks for everything guys. 11 more days, you guys who are still working, keep banging away and good luck!

Sorry for my crappy camera skills.

Thanks for looking. As always, any comments or suggestions are always welcome.

Jeff,

Sure would like to see some better photos of your Panther.  The problem is that you are positioning the camera closer than its minimum focus range.  The overhead shot is almost there, which should give you an idea of where the minimum focal distance of your camera is.  Step back and take some more shots.  If the model doesn't fill the frame at that distance, you can always crop it in any image processing program before posting.  You've put alot of time and effort into the model; give us a few good photos so that we can also appreciate it.  Thanks.

Here's a little update. I got the decals on and a little painting done. Next step is tools and weathering. I just bought some MIG filters and going to give them a try. This one is going to be close but I think that I can pull it off.

Bufflehead- Your Jagdpanther is looking awesome!! Looks better than a lot of my 1/35th stuff. I can't wait to see her finished.

Firesmacker- Your panther came out great!!

Glamdring- I still haven't got the guts to try a whitewash on any of my tanks. Looking good.

Boba- Nice little kitty.

There you go.  A nice build. I can't add anything that hasn't already been said here or in the armor forum.  For tools, I mix in a little steel or aluminum metallic with some flat black.  then if you want, you can weather by dry brushing some burnt umber.  Works reasonably well for cables too.

Panzer88:  looking really nice.  You better find a way to get this one finished before the bell rings.

panzer88 - Fantastic finish, camo looks awesome; very nice soft demarcations.

Boba - I also withdrew my first entry and started my second without "approval"; hey it happens! :) Real life gets in the way at times.... lets just build, post and see what happens! :)

For mufflers, I have only done ONE WW2 armor kit before (2 total lol), here is the recipe I used from wbill76 (Bill), but I use enamels: basecoat MM nonbuff metalizer Gunmetal, dry for couple days. Thin wash  (10;1) of MM enamel RUST, let dry. You can add shavings, talc, powder to give some texture. Dry brush burnt amber with or witout black pastels. Or add some red brown pastels or pigments if you want more "rust"

firesmacker - Looks good! Another camo 'winner" in my view. Another photo "tip" that worked for me ws to have a monotone background, forces the viewfinder to focus on the closest object (the model). Now I just borrow my wife's awesome camera :)   I also see the smiley face of a Pace spray booth? I have one too...

pordoi - I *did* PE camps on my 1/72 as my FIRST PE ever.. lol  folds are 1mm... figured, if I could do that small of a fold, I could tackle other PE...  Ill post pics later tonight

bufflehead - really nice! almost there....

I will post pics of mine later tonight, not sure if i will be able to finish since we leave for the inlaws Tues at zero-too-early, coming back the 29th... maybe I can beg for a week extension, like my students this past semester  Whistling [:-^]

ok, here is my WIP...  figured I could do a quick OOB in 72 scale, add some of the PE (first time using PE!) all in 2 weeks, working 2-3 hrs per day... The best laid modeling plans never survive contact with the plastic! I share my WIP in the main armor forum to get additional feedback and pointers, this being my third ever armor build (and probably last in 72 scale! Ufff...)

All sprue trees come in separate bags, with nary any flash or sink holes. The standard Dragon "card" includes decals, a minuscule PE fret, vinyl tracks and a metal barrel. Details are good, from my novice perspective.

The single instruction sheet has the sprue part "map", 2-page fold out instructions, and a color page showing 4 potential schemes: two different 3-tone camo, one winter scheme, and the one I chose:

Captured unit, painted in Soviet dark green... have no clue about the accuracy, but I figured I can tackle camo down the road and keep this build as simple as possible.

The wheels are connected by plastic "bridges" that can easily be cut and trimmed, leaving all the wheels attached to the sprue for ease of paint:

The rest of the wheel (parts painted green), were already separate in a bag, with a curious plastic "stick" attached to them. I am using that extension as a way of painting them all at once, see top part of picture:

I am also painting the tools on the sprues, and touch up after gluing to the hull. Too small (for me) to paint individually.

Here is the small (LOL)  PE fret....  So, of course, I chose the small handles as my first ever PE work  <drum roll please!>.

I am using the neat little PE cutting setup by SmallShop, costs about 7$. Probably unnecessary for the experience, but really helped me. The black tile gives a nice contrast and the clear guide allowed me to position the blade just so and cut the small PE parts:

Ta da! Small enough? Propeller [8-]

I use Gator's Glue, acrylic glue, water soluble. Gives you more than a few seconds to fiddle with the part's placement, and you can wipe excess with a moist (clean) brush. On the other hand, you cant "Zap" it in place as in CA glue.

Pardon my indulgence at 3 pics of ONE PE part, but its my first one you know Party [party]

The handles are 1/8" of an inch... you see the PE next to the molded plastic part:

All the PE on the turret, notice the 1mm handle on the starboard hatch.

Ok, here is a question... the molded handle had the correct curvature, but was not hollow. The PE handle has the space, but its not curved....  Both don't look good to my eyes.. whats the solution? Bend small wire to make handles? Not on 72 scale for sure, but what about for 35 scale?

The build slowed to a crawl upon construction.. alas, the parts don't fit very well, and you have to be very careful on handling due to all the attached PE.  Do you attach PE AFTER you build up the whole unit? Or build in sub-assemblies?

Anyways, here is some of the build... I had to use a lot of Tenax in some places to get a proper "weld" joint.

The latest update... I had to use several clamps to keep the back hatch level with the hull. Also notice the small PE handle at the tip of the Xcto knife (yes yes Ill stop whooping about the PE!). I attached the metal barrel.... Not sure if I need to prime it before painting?

I submerged the PE fret 5 min in regular white vinegar..will that be enough to etch the metal a bit for the paint to "bite"?  I use enamels by the way.

Thanks for looking! All matter of feedback regarding accuracy and/or construction are more than welcome, I am learning here! Make a Toast [#toast] Cheers

GO NY GIANTS BIG BLUE

Nice! Thumbs Up [tup] I love those Dragon armor pros. Got a lotta detail, go together great, and are cheap. You should be able to finish it in time. The assembly is just totally fun! ( I am suprised that you are having fit issues though. The kits usually assemble like a dream?  Also, congrats! You'll be addicted to PE in no time, and meanwhile hate it!

Very nice builds everyone, I am humbled to diplay my little white piece of junk next to such amazing builds.

Little progress today, touched up the whitewash in many spots after looking at my pictures.  It's true, the camera does pick up that which I don't see in person.  Attached the tracks (I hate DS Tracks!!!!!!) and the sideskirts.

Tomorrow is the decals, which should be interesting over the zimmerit, and weathering.  I really need to do something about the tracks as well, they are too rusty for my tastes.  Ideas anyone?

Anyways, I can't wait to take a pic of this on one of the the 12 foot snowpiles in the back yard!

Guys: Sorry I've been sparse here lately...thanks for the post about my life keeping me busy dupes.

Boba Fett: I added you to the participant list!

JMart: I'll make the build change, nice work so far!

panzer88: You're on a roll dude...first that Stug, now this kitty...AWESOME camo!

firesmacker: You're camo' looks good too, especially for your first tryThumbs Up [tup].  The dirt looks a little off to me though...not sure why.  The color is right but it doesn't feel random enough...take another look and see what you think.

Glamdring: Whitewash is tough...go check out my Winter Camo Tutorial I did for my SU-122 for tips and techniques.  Keyword search it...It will help.

Great guide you have there.  Thanks for the tips and I will be implementing some of your ideas to make my whitewash a bit more worn.

If it ends up like garbage, I hold you responsible for planting such ideas on my head.  Big Smile [:D]

Double post, of updated pics.

I am extremely close to done, I just need to do some minor touch ups and stick the MGs on the Panther.  Then I'm calling this one complete!  Someday I'll may put mud on it, but I'm quite content with it as it is right now.  Many thanks to SMJ for guiding me on the weathering path, my results aren't as fantastic as his guide, but I'm definitely filing that away for future use. Thumbs Up [tup]

Outdoor snow terrain pics will be taken on the morrow, hopefully the rain won't melt all the snow....

Hi guys,

With five days to go before the end of this build, I am delighted to report that my Academy Tiger I is undergoing wash weathering. For the first time I've used an overall oil filtre -- it sure darkens the beast, a lil more than I had intended! Pin wshing at this time -- photos later.
