Hello Brent-Reload. If you're still looking for a larger-than-1/72 Lysander I just learned (my modeling buddy just bought one) Revell has a 1/32 Westland Lysander Mk. I/III. 11.5" long and 18.75 " wide, skill 5. Kit #04710.

Yep,

That's the re-release of the old Matchbox kit - it was reviewed in this month's Scale Aviation Modeller - apparently the kit still holds up quite well.

Cheers,
Dave

Thanks guys!!

I have seen it, and have heard great things about it. I would have to get the boss's ATENTION..........heheheheheh....................the rules were stated as being 1/72 and 1/48 only.....Dead [xx(]...........I can't ask Poppie to change the rules can I????/..........Tongue [:P]

I am going to aquire it, and will have to do it at a later time, but it sure looks real nice Poppie.........hehehehehehe..................I'm just pulling your chain Poppie.

Hey Brent,  If you read back in this thread you'll see that I retracted that statement for Bear (I think it was) and corrected the 'rules' at the beginning of the thread.  Your good to go my son. So glad to see you've committed to another kit for this build!  Isn't this great guys, when someone doesn't "have to do it at a later time" but can just go ahead and add it on for us now.  Thanks Brent.  Looking forward to some (more) pics.   Poppie

(There used to be an old saying going around that I haven't heard in years but it goes something like this: "You may pull my chain if you wish, but if you do, please remember - "I flush" )

Music to my ears!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Put me down for my usual Academy 1/72 PBY-5A done in the markings of VC winner Flight Lieutenant D.E. Hornell in which he used to sink U-1225, and a Revell of Germany 1/32 Westland Lysander Mk.III!!!!!!Party [party]

I too like Tamiya and Has kits very much and there is the odd kit that does not fit together well, but for the most part, they are great kits if you can afford them. I almost died in the LHS the other day, Has 1/48 P-47 for $35??? good lord. I am geting both my Lysander and PBY for only $10 more!!!! I did manage to find an Acadamy P-47N 1/48 for $18!! It went in the cart!! I am doing a NMF with a rather "revealing" pin up girl...Blush [:I]Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]Dinner [dinner]

Also picked up a Verlindon 1/32 USAF Pilot from Vietnam, set of 3 1/48 USAAF pilots, and 2 things of the newer Tamiya weathering pastels.........good lord.....I want to try them so bad I think I am going to ask my kid if I can put some on her as make-up!!!! I can see it now.....rusty lips, burnt blue and soot eye shadow, and oily black blush............I think before I do that, I should hide the new shotgun from my wife............Black Eye [B)]Blindfold [X-)]

BULLET   where in PG are you? I am orriginally from the Lower Mainland and lived in PG for 2 years while I worked at Rustad Brothers Saw mill. We initailly lived across from the sports fields, then moved way out of town up the big hill by a lake, and then settled in right across from the airport in a duplex. Actually my daughter was born in PG hospital in 97. Great trout fishing and the bear and moose hunting is 2nd to none!! Not to mention the wife and I driving down main street and having a moose running down the sidewalk!!! only in PG!!

POPPY'S EMAIL MODELS:  Well guys, I've gone right over the top!!! And I do mean, "Over the TOP'.  I had an idea about giving our hobby a boost a few months ago and decided that like all 'ideas', it was only good if someone did something about it. We've all talked about doing something to encourage our younger kids to get involved in our modeling hobby - well, like I say, I've started the ball rolling on something. I know you Canuks are familiar with the Canadian Armed Forces Cadet Program - for those of you who are not, it's the largest youth organization in Canada, for young people 12 - 18, run by the Canadian Armed Forces, with Air Cadets, Sea Cadets, and Army Cadets. I don't know the exact National Number of Cadets enrolled this year, but in the Central Region alone this year we have 16,000 young adults taking military training during the school year and during the summer months.

Last year there were 21,000 summer training slots filled by cadets in Canada doing everything from pilot training (power and glider) to gunnery, to music schools.  If you want to know more about a fantastic program run by a government for young people just take a look at this website: (and this is just the Central Region)

http://www.central.cadets.ca/public/central-e.htm

This is the "Official 'blurb' or intro to the Cadet Program:

"The Canadian Cadet Program is a community-based youth training activity managed by the Canadian Forces (CF) in partnership with the Navy League of Canada; the Army Cadet League of Canada; and the Air Cadet League of Canada. The Canadian Forces provides personnel and equipment to conduct the cadet training program as directed by National Defence Headquarters"

These young people are fitted out with full military uniforms, provided training, and even paid  for some of the senior training camps during the summer. It's worth looking at the website.

Anyway, when I was with the Forces I used to help out with the cadets (I was a small arms instructor) and one of the things I did a bit of was help organize some of the cadets who put on some 'model shows'.  These occured when I was with 150 Air Cadet Squadron and my son was a Warrant Officer with the Squadron and my daughter a Sergeant and they did most of the organizing.  I got to thinking a few months ago that here was the largest gathering of young people in Canada, all with an interest in things military, like airplanes, and ships and tanks and stuff and how could I help get them, about 25,000 of them, involved in modeling? I checked the mark-up on models!!!! Holy Cow! Would you believe the first company I contacted has a suggested manufacturers retail price with a mark-up of 40% and I was told that some retailers add onto that!!  When I asked a couple of the big importers if they would offer a bulk discount I got responses from 10% to 20% (rare and smalll). So, I thought, if I owned my own Local Hobby Shop, and got an Ontario Retailers Licence, and applied for a Federal GST (Government Sales Tax) number, I could order all these wonderful plastic kits (and supplies) for, up to, 40% off, and in a few cases, a bit more, I could pass that on to these wonderful, dedicated kids, (and the serving military) for whatever they cost me, plus the cost of shipping. I should be able to offer the cadets an average saving of 25% - 30% and help/encourage the individual squadrons, and units (Regiments) to start up their own modeling clubs.  And, being an active Priest, I should be able to get a few churches in the area to donate some storage space and a few old geezers to pack boxes and lick stamps.

Well, over the last few days I've received a pack of mail. First, I opened an official looking government enevelope that lo and behold, contained my Federal GST #, and another envelope had my Registration of my business (my wife is my partner) of "Poppy's Email Models, Inc.", and the last two items really put me in business: my 'Commercial Mastercard' in the name of 'Poppy's Email Models' and my first letter of credit with a supplier -Bob Adia of Hobby Craft, Canada - who has offered me a good starting line up ranging from the $20 'starter kit to the extreme end Trumpeter.  I have a lot of work to do to jump through all the hoops with the distributors for the other major mfgs - heck, I still have to find out who a lot of them are, but, theoretically at least, I'm in the 'Model' business.

I've got to brush up on my HTML, (translate= find a volunteer) and get a website going with a catalogue of what I'lll be offering to the kids this year.  I'll be starting small with a just a few models and restricting the 'program' to commanding officers of units in the province - then gradually, I hope, branch out. I think I can offer the kids a 'first time' buy this year, and once I get it set up, we can offer a second buy every year.  Oh yeah, I have my web site address - it's not active yet but it will be called www.poppys.ca and the full 'legal name' of the business will be 'Poppy's Email Models', but, and this is a big BUT, I will just be selling to Cadets and eventually, serving members of the military.  The big issue is trusting the CO's of the various units to collect and pass in the money to me -- that could be a big 'Ouch'.

Oh yeah, and by the way, this is not, repeat, not, an official part of any DND (Department of National Defence) Program, nor is it financially supported by the Canadian Armed Forces.  It is being put in place, by me, with the 'knowledge' and 'blessing' of the Air, Army, and Sea Cadet Leagues of Canada.  Anyway, I was getting bored.

That sounds very cool Poppie and I hope it works out for you.  I gave away half a dozen model kits to the scout group that I volunteer with last christmas and I think I sparked an interst with a couple of them.  I can just imagine what something of the scale you are working on would do for the hobby.

Speaking of Cadet Camps I live in Vernon, B.C. and we have a major Camp here right behind my house.  It's quite a show to see thousands of these young kids parading around in the summer time.  I personally have no ties/contacts with the military but when you are ready to branch out and extend the program let me know if I can assist in anyway.  Thumbs Up [tup]

On another note of this build, I officially ordered my models today, and they should be in for pick up next week some time. Looking forward to it.

Brent! You were the enemy! I started in 861 in Abbotsford before leaving as a F/Sgt for the Forces in the early 90's!

Poppie, I got my glider licence through the Air Cadets and that was enough to get me to apply as a pilot - as luck had it (or they were dumb) they accepted me. After that I went back as an instructor. If it weren't for medical problems - I'd likely go back to flying there. Now where are my Captain shoulder boardsWhistling [:-^]

Dave, I most certainly will take whatever help you can offer. I won't be doing anything with the Western Region this year but will certainly need an experienced modeler, who might be willing to put on a display, or even organize a bit of a display, out there for the kids to see just what the actual finished products can look like.  That's going to be my biggest challenge. It's quite easy  to expose them to the 'before' appearance of a kit, but letting them see, and maybe even 'handle' a finished kit, or see a bit of an airbrush exhibit, would go absolute miles.  I'll be recruiting guys from right across Canada to go into Squadrons and units and do a bit of a 'dog-and-pony-show.  Thanks for being my first volunteer.

Drew, well and truly done, Old Chap. That's fantastic.  How would you feel about passing a bit of that back along the line?  They may not let you fly because of a medical, but with those boards, you could sure help steer a lot of great kids along a pretty bumpy road.

At the very least, how would you feel about joining forces with Dave, in tandem or singular, and go out to some of the squadrons (and army units) and show the kids just what can be done with a model. Like I said to Dave, there's a big difference between 'before' and 'after' and it takes seeing a couple of 'after' kits and especially a couple being worked on to inspire these kids to say "Yeah", I could do that.  I won't be ready for your neck of the woods until 2009 but I would be really honoured if I could put you fellas down on my 'volunteer display teams' list, right up there at the top.

I'd also appreciate any ideas of what to include in a demonstration. As you know, having someone come onto an armed forces base to 'discuss and show' things military has to have approval. I'd have to set out a kind of agenda for a CO so he/she would know how much time to allow in an evening, or to advertise a showing and display at the armoury on, say, a Sunday morning.  It would only take once a year for about 2 hours to help get some kids started, and maybe you'd find yourself with a dedicated 'class' of student modelers that would enjoy 'sitting at the masters feet'.  Please give it some serious thought. I'll be be looking for your suggestions and later on, I'll be back to you with the logistics of how we can go about setting these things up.

I'm hoping to recruit some guys from IPMS to volunteer to do some 'dog-and-pony-work here in Hamilton.  We've got 150 - Hamilto Tiger Squadron, 427 -Black Knight Squadron and , why is my mind drawing a blank.  Been a long(er) day.

I think a lot of you fellas would really enjoy doing some display work, then putting in 4 - 6 Sunday Mornings (I've looked for you in Mass Angel [angel] and your not there so there must be a couple of hours available - lets see - 3 hours x 6 Sunday mornings = 18 hours divided by the formative years (psychologists say 12 to 25) is only 0.72 hours worth of contact to bring a kid into the fold of modeling!!!  Can I make you volunteer number 3 from the RCAF Group Build 2008.  My gosh, but there is a lot of good stuff coming out of this build.  By the way, how are your planes coming.  Any pics of work-in-progress we can 'tear apart.

Fair warning all - I hope we don't just give each other a fistful of 'attaboys'  in this build , nor will we be too bleary eyed and proud to accept well meaning advice (even if we don't agree - tell the poor son-of-a-gun-why.

Jeez, I'm proud to be a part of this forum and this build in particular.

HA!! Small world.

You flew CAF? If so, did you run into, or happen to know Capt. Mike French? He was in my cadet Sqd and went on to fly 18's out of Cold Lake. For the last 4 years now he has been with the Snowbirds. He flew the #7 bird for 3 years and now is on the #12 as a Standards pilot.

HA!! Small world. We did have some fierce rivalry between our 2 sds didn't we? Heck, we might have even met or seen each other before...you were in at the same time as me. I joined the Army in 89.

Seing and talkins with him again at an Abotsford Air Show back in ...umm...?2003? perhaps, he flew the 18 in for the show and when I went back to Saskatchewan, I fullfilled my life's dream of becoming a pilot with my private license. Unfortunatley I have had to put it on hold for a few years....stuff to do on house!! I soloed on Dec 7th 04 and So far I sit with just over 100 hours on a 172. I knew Mike. He was in the class ahead of me. I got on Tutors in 94, Mike was '93. He was a very good pilot even before he got in. A very disciplined pilot.

Good for you! Nothing like breaking the surly bonds of earth. It's a world unto it's own. Congratulations. 100 hours is little more than qualified, but you are qualified! Make a Toast [#toast] If you ever get out this way again....we have to get together!Party [party]

Hey Brent,

Why do they call them 'servers' when all they seem to do sometimes act like 'witholders'?  Glad to hear you got that problem sorted out.  It's frustrating as heck when something like that happens.  I have the same thing going on. I have a site that every time I try to get onto I get a 'runtime error' for some kind of Java script on their server. My browser won't accept their script so I had to download Mozilla's 'Firefox' and set it up. I can get on the site fine now, but I now have three browsers to choose from when I boot up????

Well, it's back into the hospital for the next 'hand-job' tomorrow.  Seems like I just got the stitches out from the last surgery---wait a minute--------- it was 'yesterday'!!!  Oh well, eventually I should be able to play the piano.  Only one more operation to go, and I won't be having it until next year as it's a big one and I'll be laid up for quite some time so, I'll have a bit of a break once this one here is over with.  I'm going to change my  name to 'the glove' - I just had this mental image of Michael Jackson flash through my mind.  That's what I need for this hand......a sequined white glove instead of these darned roll-up bandages.

Wish me luck guys, and I may not be doing much typing other than the 'hunt and peck' stuff with my 'other' hand until I get the wraps off. My work on my Spit is Sputtering.

The servers are a pain in the arse sometimes I'll tell ya.

If you don't mind me asking Poppie, what exactly are they doing to your hand? Give it to me in medical jargin so I can understand it better.

Hey guys,

Man.. still swamped with work and photography stuff - haven't had squat time to myself to build or paint :(

That said, I know some folks here may be looking at building or trying to build a DH 82c Tiger Moth.

Pavla has it in 1/72 and Revell/Matchbox has it in 1/32 - I believe that Aeroclub have a 1/48 version as well.

That said, there was a review posted on the Modelling Madness website of the kit and how, if you use the Airfix kit (cheap and likely easy to find) you could get, to paraphrase the old commercial "two, two, two planes in one!" Big Smile [:D]

 Hey Jeff,

Don't forget, for the Chipmunk (if you have the old Airfix 1/72 one) that the Canadian canopy is different than the Brit canopy. Aeroclub makes a vacform Canadian canopy that can be used with the Airfix kit which suits it nicely Smile [:)]

Hey guys

I just wanted to show you guys my RCAF CF-188 done in the 2006 demo jet livery. I don't know a lot of history on aircraft 188711 and I'm not sure how to find out. I just really liked the design is why I choose it. I will do this model again but next time I will choose something from the 410 squadron in Cold Lake Ab. I was just putting the finishing touches on mine when this GB started so I'm linking to a thread in aircraft rather than posting my pics in this thread. I hope you guys like it!

It looks like you've loosened up the guidelines a bit, initially my interests didn't qualify since they are after the merger, but now maybe they do.

I have several Canadian rescue helicopter projects I could use if they qualify, all in the Yellow and Red scheme that I believe was adopted in the late 70's.

CH-113 Labrador

CH-118 Iroquois

CH-135 Twin Huey

CH-146 Griffon

CH-149 Comorant

So would any of these be acceptable?

Ok, then put me down for the CH-118 using the 1/72 Italeri UH-1D kit with some Belcher Bits decals. I'm waiting on Squadron for several of the kits but I have a couple of the UH-1D kits already in the stash so it seems like a good place to start.

I got started tonight painting the fuselage and various external parts. I didn't get off to a good start, everything is now soaking in a vat of Superclean to strip the paint so I can try again. Black Eye [B)]

Thanks Dave, I never noticed that before.  Hey, a quick question.  I haven't been to Toronto since "Phantom" but I was wondering, is the Lancaster still on the post by the CN Tower and Ontario Place?

Jeff

Man.. days turn into weeks and weeks into months etc. - I've been way too busy Sad [:(] so there's been very little building going on at my place.

That said, with an upcoming IPMS meeting this Tuesday I think I should "crank it up a notch" and have something ready for the meeting.

Jeff, with respect to that Lanc, it's long gone from the pedestal near the lake - but it is being restored (non-flying of course) by the folks at the Toronto Aerospace Museum. It's a 1944 Mk X version that was built locally in Malton by Victory Aircraft Ltd.

I hope to either start painting or finish painting (or both) the Hurricane MK IIc and/or the Beech C-45F this weekend.

Cheers,
Dave
