Sdk.fz 234/4 WIP . No more post here . Link to completed build on p.8

Sorry.  Apologize for going so off topic.  It was just one of those incidents that was both unusal and very pleasent.  Checking in at the VOQ and being in-processed by a Luftwaffe Duty NCO was also a little bit weird.

No more lectures, promise.

I was the DIVARTY S4 and we made visits to a direct support 155mm howitzer battalion in El Paso.  The Luftwaffe had their anti-aircraft missle school at Ft. Bliss and the Bundeswehr maintained a battalion of Leopard II's there as well.  The permanent party cadre's family support group ran a German restaraunt to help finance activities for the families.

Rumor had it that once a month, a Luftwaffe C-130 flew in evry month filled with German beer and all the makings for the terrific menu at the restaraunt.  Best German food I've ever had anywhere.

Major , ok , now i get it . Thanks for filling me in on the details . When you previousely mentioned the luftwaff restaurant at Fort Bliss  i didnt know the connection . Interesting what i have learned from this thread so far . Your experience with modern artillery is interesting ...... I wont go into asking about that here , in these times .........you know .

I wouldnt doubt the C-130 bringing in the Weissbier , and whatever else . From what i researched it looked like that  beer from Germany is seldom found here stateside .

They made it with veal and I always ordered Club Weiss to go with it.  Ahhh!  Good times, good times.

well well well.. isn't this a surprise Carl,or Sea or Shell or whatever you are calling yourself these days. Pushing the boundrys of this fine forum and responsible modelers over the limit of good taste again.

This model is an abomination to fine German design. You have mutated it past the point of recognition and frankly sir, I just cannot sit idley by and do nothing . Effective immediately I am canceling my subscription to Home and Garden. I hope you are happy with yourself.

Very nice build. 

What mix of tan and dunkelgerb did you use on that marvelous 1:1 scale model of the weinerschnitzel?  What air brush settings (psi, etc) for the garnish on the side?  It looks as real as that served at the Ft. Bliss Luftwaffe restaraunt! 

                                        The concept needs work and the turret ring is a bit small,oh and I'd like to try some of that.

The following is meant as humor and is NOTa factual event .

One of Hitlers wild night mares was to mount the turret from a Tiger 1 with its 88 mm cannon on the chasis of a 234 . He felt the extra armor of the turret would make a good match with the speed of a wheeled chasis .This vehicle never made it to a paper drawing but Hitler did say something about his bad dream to Goering , who  choked on his mouthful of viennese cutlet .

Here's the concept .

Goerings second portion

Thought i'd post this method of painting tires and wheels . i've used it on painting the rubber of road wheels of tanks as well , just use something of a smaller diameter , tubing , plastic caps , washers etc . This method works well and is fast .

The wheel is sprayed in the appropriate color .

I used this plastic cap to mask the wheel . Seems there is always something aroud that is the correct diameter .

I held it down with one finger and sprayed around it with the tire color . I mixed Panzer gray with flat black .

The result a few minutes later.

Makes doing 9 of these a cinch . Took about 30 min .

For any further viewers of my build here , I'm not building this model to be an exact replica of a museum vehicle or to represent a vehicle from a photo taken durring WW II .  This build will be based on "my idea" and while the "facts" are appreciated for reference i will continue to build this model with "my idea" of a vehicle that could possibly have existed . 

 

 

Uh oh!  You risk losing your SERIOUS MODELER card.  Every build of your's that I've seen looks close to real to me.  Don't change a thing, every WIP is a lesson for me.

I wondered if it might be an "artistic license" choice. Definitely provides some contrast which is your stated intent and looks cool! With that in mind, what I'm about to say is only for those who come along later and isn't meant to detract from your build.  

While it's true that Pak 40s were produced in the panzer gray period of time, the production period for the 234/4 ran from Dec '44 to April '45 and modified Pak 40 carriages/mounts (including cut-down lower splinter shields) were necessary to fit the confines of the vehicle, so they couldn't just grab any old Pak 40 and plop it in the hull. The reason for the primer red interior was due to the standing factory practice at the time the vehicles were produced. Even with the urgent need, only about 90 of these were produced during the short 4 months or so of production.

Pulled off the masking tape tonight and touched up the interior and suspension .

Gun is looking good Carl! Are you deliberately leaving the rear half in panzer gray or will you be painting that in additional steps to come?

Nope , thats the final on the pak 40 camo .I wanted to add a little interest to to the paint scheme . My idea was that the 75mm pak 40 was painted Panzer gray and mounted on a wheeled carriage as was normal. (see below picture). When this sdk.fz 234/4 was completed there was no pak 40 at the factory to mount on it  due to a shortage . Hitler was screaming for more Panzerjaegers  to be sent to the front , so any Pak 40 not at the front already was requesitioned for use on the 234/4 .Due to time constraints  only the front of the shield and forward barrel were painted in camo . The inside of the rest of the hull will remain in red primer so the contrast should be interesting .

Gun is looking good Carl! Are you deliberately leaving the rear half in panzer gray or will you be painting that in additional steps to come?

Wow!  As usual, your WIP can serve as a "How To.." on a 234/4 build, thus saving all of us money to sunk into kit resources.  Beautiful work, as always.
