so far so good!
I saw in some pictures that the drivers periscope looks like a Panther D drivers slit instead of the t34 drivers hatch.
T26E4 My plan would be to find a ping pong ball or similar object, cut it down and then stipple some cast texture to it. This way, I can ensure a truly round bulge. Whaddya think P38?

T26E4 The glacis mounted 20mm in a round fairing is, I suspect, a nod to the Panther's kugelblende MG mount. In some iterations of the Jigsaw Tank, you see many Panther-like features. The huge round casting is, IMHO, definitely one of them.

then I removed the hull top,, and cut an modified it so the turret will rotate 360 deg,,
Cut the rear deck ,shortened it.. , added a spacer to the front of the hull top to make room for the crew hatches..
I used a dremel sanding drum to carve back the engine grills and covers..:550:0]
[removed the hull top with backdragging a blade for a scribe hole, then a razor saw blade..:550:0]
measured and marked the engine deck for shortening..[View:/themes/fsm/utility/:550:0]
:550:0]
[spaver card added.. and holes filled in where the engine deck reworking was done..:550:0]
new hull top added back on...:550:0]
i added a plastic strip around the cut sections to help blend it in.. later I'll add some glue and putty to replicate welding seam...
the underneath....
turret set back on...:550:0]
I added some stolen M-10 hull hatches... these will be added on and holes cut for Slim and Arch to look out of...:550:0]
Progress tonight.. started modifying the hull to accept the turret,, and lucked out.. the T-34 lower turret part fit thru the hole of the Walker turret like it was meant to.. I trimmed some pieces..for a better fit..[:550:0]
light green is the Walker, the dark green the Tamiya T-34

Ghost Generals.. who'da thunk it...
Rick,,, blowing Tigers up with the 37MM in the Stuart? ! ha ! for sure !!
Guys.. did some work tonight.. and.. I'm psyched.. its going well with the mods..
PICS SOON !!
Great idea P38! One of my favorite books,,Ive always wanted to do a DC war comics group build,,,Enemy Ace, Losers, Gunner sarge and pooch, Unknown Soldier, Sgt rock, Weird War tales,,,etc etc..
One thing that always had me wonder...how did they modify the chassis,,whatever it was..to hold a 20mm cannon??
I mean that's unrealistic right?? 'cause a Ghost general is very real!!

RAAATAT tat!
Awesome project, looking forward to what you come up with.
...A destroyed blue Tiger, Panther or Panzer IV would make a nice addition if you decide on a vignette or diorama.
Manstein's revenge Very cool...looks like most depictions also show a flat roof on the turret instead of a sloped one...a lot of this build is gonna come down to how much time you want to put into modifying existing parts...

Looks pretty close to most of the drawings to me.

Well.. last night.. I tape together a T-34 Hull and the Walker turret and set them on each other to see how it looked..
here's the results/:550:0]

I think some reworking of the turret bustle to make it look more like tool boxes.. and I will have to move the turret back to make room for the driver and MG hull gunner hatches, I may graft the t-34 lower ring on to the Walker turret, and cut the hull ring area out, move it back, and recut/rework the engine hatches and vents..
ok,, here's a shot of her stern,,,, There's others , but this one is common:550:0]
Hercmech You're going to make me dig through my old comic stash and look at the one or two I have in there that has this tank. I didn't remember them until you showed the one picture with the ghost horse...

lolol. guys.. yup.. she changes often... nearly each appearance of her is differant than the last.. I'll post some pics later when I get home of her rear.. the most often shown is the T-34... but she does have the other styles of side shots everyone has mentioned... P38, panzer MkIV, T-34, M-18, Chaffee, etc.. pick your poison.. none are wrong..,, depending on which issue your memory has chosen..

Here are more iterations of the tank:
I disgree with Manstein about the choice for the chassis. Sure, in some frames, the chassis appears to mimic a M18 or M24. But with that logic, one could also say to use a backwards German Pz IV hull (as in the picture on pg 2). A whole variety of features change -- sometimes frame to frame. You can pick and choose -- but to declare the M18/M24 as the definitive one goes against DC's own "spec" drawings where they declare the hull to be an ex-T34.
But ultimately, we shouldn't quibble about this fantasy tank. When I go about it, I'm going to chop down a DML T-34 hull and build a scratch turret.
Bringing back some memories. I haven't read the comic in years.

masonme2 The haunted tank was a Stuart when I was reading that comic book and it shall remain a Stuart in my mind. I like your enthusiasm for building this tank but to me it's like changing the colors of Supermans outfit. When you decide to kill off a character then leave it alone. From the looks of the scanned comic books the writer/illustrator can't decide what this thing should look like. Instead of the Haunted Tank they should call it the Transformer... oh that's already taken.

I started reading the mag when Auric ( who haunts a German tank, meets up with our boys in a rainy German hillside and Arch saves the boys, but looses his life..) while JEB and crew battle the German tiger, Auric fights with the Ghostly General over them.. This issue got me hooked,, so to me.. the Jigsaw tank was "my" Haunted Tank... It all depends on when you started reading the mag...,,, but all in all.. they were all "Haunted Tanks..."..

deafpanzer What the heck!?!?!? Only three or four pages of scanned copy? I want to read the whole thing! Thanks for the memories... If you are going for Chaffee chasis, I bet we will be seeing many old Italeri kit on eBay soon for much less because of the new kit from Bronco.

...but I tend to picture in my mind what was the most commonly depicted version...not the one-offs that might have appeared here and there in scattered issues... "
thats basically what I'm going to go with,.. what my mind has in it as the " Jigsaw" tank... I didn't post em yet,, but there are lots of panels in the various stories that clearly show the stern of the tank.. and the most depicted is a T-34 stern.. the big round engine hatch. and the 2 vertical exhaust pipes, slanting rear panal.. The most often depicted road wheels( even tho the wrong amount) show no return rollers either.
"This would be a great GB interpretation exercise where people posted only their final work to see how each person visualizes what the tank looked like in their mind's eye... "
great Idea
I don't mind if anyone has their versions.. posting in here to,, or, if we get enough.. to make a new thread in the GB hooch...
p38jl Gamera, I sent you a PM.. Manny, I checked that issue, and scanned the page... here she is... other than the main gun and the 50 cal,, it makes no mention of the other parts used. also note.. the 5 road wheels.. [View:/themes/fsm/utility/:550:0]

But IMO the chassis looks more like a Hellcat or Chafee one than a T-34...In fact, until this thread I'd never heard of that theory before...and the pages you have posted does go to show that even the comic-book writers/illustrators weren't settled on what the tank "looked like"---for example, you posted one page with it having a German Mk IV chassis!!!...
