Hi Andy ; -).... hey Shell , I am wading through a PDF shop manual for the Zil and there is a power steering cooler located at the bottom of the radiator as a separate unit....more soon

Hey Shell ... I blew that pic up on my computer and when I did , the vertical pipes now look like radiator ' Flaps ' that would be controlled by the driver or thermostat... does the model have any cooling hoses leading off the tranny ?

Hey Shell I was joking about the A/C condenser, but with your reference picture I am pretty sure I can tell you the smallest (first one towards the outside) is an engine oil cooler, the second ( that looks mostly like just vertical pipes ) is most likely the transmission and transfer case cooler and the one closest to the engine is , of course , the radiator... I don't know of many (any ?) vehicles from that era that would have A/C.. unless they were U.S.....It is really hard to be sure of what I am looking at with just one pic...the vertical pipes don't appear to be just a guard so I am gonna go with my theory.... cool picture

William and Bill ......Thanks for the comments .......i dont know what that third radiator is either . I dont think its for a.c. though as i dont see a a.c. compressor on the engine . The compressor that is on the pasenger side front is foe the air brakes i'm pretty sure .It 's all covered up with the radiator shroud and not much can be seen in there when its done .
Nice job on the cable Carl. I don't know that the Soviets were too big on the creature comforts...but an AC in the jungle would've been nice I'm sure!

My-T-Fine Shell !.... the detail on the hook end looks very realistic as does the cable itself. Nice work on getting the metallic quality to come through.... Now I see the oil cooler and I see the radiator, but I think you forgot to put the A/C condenser in !! ... you don't want the NVA to break a sweat do ya ?... Their butts will stick to your leather seats and ruin the nice job you did !

Oops ! I never got back to the cab today .
I finally have the wire rope and hook on the winch now .The kit comes with a length of thread but it was hairier than a dogs tail ! so i dug into my ship building supplies and found some rigging thread that world .
After some flat black and metalic gray paint i wound it on the winch drum and then touched it up with some mig pigs (Marc) .When i worked on a line crew our winch had a heavy spring steel guard over the wire rope behind the hook to protect the eye splice , so i added that detail here .
Nice work on the details as usual Carl! The trick with the seat cushions has worked out very well. Having things not be quite perfect (within reason of course) adds character to a build when you're adding these types of details and makes it stand-out vs. take away from the finish IMHO.

Marc , good deal then . I'm trying to make this vehicle have the look of being used hard and not taken care of look .sounds like maybe i'll get that look on this one .
Shell, you would be surprised how little I "already know." I most definitely learn a lot as I go along in the hobby. For me though, when the subject of, "What do you like about this hobby” comes up... .I am all about the build. Making parts fit, techniques, running into a problem then figuring it out. That type of stuff.
In my club when the guys are talking to me about a particular whatever they see the blank(ish) look on my face and this is the conversation...
"You have no clue what I am talking about."
"Nope."
"You just wanna build one."
"Yup"
So when I see a cool thing like that bead on the seat cushion, I file that away to use one day. In this case that one day will be soon
And what I liked about yours was that uneven sort of look that you have. You call it sloppy... I call it a worn seat that has had many a keister in it and is all misshapen.

Hey Shell.. I meant to tell you before, if you have to strip paint ( enamel or acrylic or Tamiya ) regular brake fluid works better than anything I have ever tried. and it absolutely does not touch the plastic or soften fine details. Most times I have used it , I only need to let the part soak for about 3 minutes and then wash under cool running water and gently get in all the details with an old soft tooth brush or even an old paint brush .
Next time you paint something, paint some scrap or parts you don't need and when the paint is cured just give the old brake fluid a try. You will love it.

Steve ,William , Marc , i'm surprised you guys like the seats that welll . I did a sloppy job onthe beading and wasnt sure how accurate it looked . I guess i did ok . Heck i was going to redo it till i read both of yours and Steves comments . Good enough then guys .
Marc , you probably already know this .the seats in this Zil are some kind of vinyle it looks like . I'm pretty sure the seat in the M2/M3 are canvas but they still have a small bead . Like i said you probably already know this ...... so excuzzee mezee if'n you noze this alreadeeze ................

hey Shell those seats look good enough to sit on ! Looks like my living room furniture !....seriously , with the addition of the stretched sprue for beading, they look like the real deal ...super realistic.

Building the perfect model---just not quite yet
Ok , i re-worked the hinges on the hood and the fit is satisfactory now . What i did was file out the notches in between the hinges so that there is more surface for the glue to adhere too .
The seats that come in the kit are one piece for the back rest and one piece for the bottom . I cut the back and bottom parts to make the bottom into 2 parts and the back rest into 2 parts . Then i grooved the cushions with a file and sand paper to distort the surface . Then i brushed on lacquer thinner and stippled the surface to roghen it up . After that cured and hardened i lightly sanded the high spots
Finally i used stretched spue to simulate beading on the upholstery .
Working on more cab interior detail next .

I worked on the hood ,sliced the hood in half .
It will look something like this when its completed . This temporary .
I thought i would have the hood finished but my method of attaching the halves didnt work so i going to strip the paint and rework the attachment ..........if it doesnt make since .wait and i'll have pictures when i get it done . Been busy here with other things but i;ll into the assembly this weekend .
Steve , yes it is getting weird ...............but that happens sometimes .
