Hey guys, thanks for your encouragement. I won't really spill into it as I want to keep the post focused on the thread ... But, thanks for that.

Camo, your work is AWESOME!!! Nice catch on the colors. Sometimes it just takes a little longer to get a color right .... it happens. But nice job.

Just so that you guys know. I'm going to be making a couple more updates tomorrow and Saturday and then that will be it for me for a bit. I'm going to the field for about 3 weeks so I'm expecting you guys to keep things going. (i.e. ... someone has to play the angry, crazed guy in my place! HAHA!) I doubt that I'll be able to check in at all, but if I get the chance, I'll be sure to drop in and say hello and check out your updates.

Thanks again guys for the compliments.....

BTW, camo, you said that you're going to be painting your guys with ARPAT? I thought that they were going to be in the tri-color uniforms? What year(s) of OIF are you going for? If you need it, I'll shoot you a PM about the ARPAT .... just let me know.

Sounds like quite the collection! You should take a shot of your paint room (kinda like model's spare parts room Laugh [(-D]) next time you make an update!

just doing the marpat alone...i need to put that on my figs in my dio...

Shock [:O] Never mix an Army man with a Marine! I hear they get angry!! haha ACU, sometimes called ARPAT (Army Pattern)?? is not MARPAT (Marine Pattern) Tongue [:P]

I'm sure you know the difference just giving you a hard time on that typeo camo

haha I do need some motivation- I need time though too- that's for sure. As far as the curb being a little big.. eh oh well, it's Iraq, maybe they forgot their tape measures at home and just made a really big pour mold for the concrete?

I'm worried about him too camo- he's suddenly gotten very shouty and half crazed... some kind of future update/new project we have to keep an eye out for... Blindfold [X-)] getting a little nervous hahaha

But model- in all seriousness, I agree with camo- your OIF figure looks great, I think as soon as you're happy with the nameplate- weather or not you do anything to the rocks is your call alone, I think they look fine and they never distracted me nor looked out of place, however I was a little closely involved in the project- so maybe taking into account the new pair of eyes that are impatial having never seen it up until now might be worth it a bit.

thanks p.o. you have no idea the battle i had with that yellow!!! LOL. but thanks for the comps anyway. as far as "pulling colors out of nowhere"...dude, if you only knew how much paint i have....LOL....colors....the colors....all i see is colors....i have a color for probably everything out there. even sent a guy here on the forum a few bottles...didnt even make a dent!!!

anyway, i know the curbs are "out of scale" a bit...but in the long run...i'm o.k. with that. where as model might get upset, start yelling at everyone then change it 100 times.... j/k buddy!! Laugh [(-D] speaking of that...

model, if you read this, i hope your not discouraged by what anyone said about your fig. sorry but i really really think you have done tremendouos with it from start to finish. all the wire work and lights your doing on this next one...even better...(even better u than me Laugh [(-D]). just doing the marpat alone...i need to put that on my figs in my dio...i havent even tried to paint that kind of a pattern yet. one thing i accept with my modeling and just everyday life...there's always someone better than you no matter what it is...you cant fight it you cant worry about it you cant change it....your figure just with that dio alone was better than i think i could ever do...but that's ok...you gave me something really cool to look at Thumbs Up [tup]. put it in the gallery, it very well deserves its placement there! just my My 2 cents [2c] buddy!

going to enjoy doing nothing for the whole weekend....dial up sux but that's ok. i'll look in during the weekend...expect you two to have some posts!!!! p.o. keep an eye on this guy...he needs some motivation...as do you!! lol.

Very nice colors!! Good work on eyeballing it- they came out dead on IMO- you're pretty good at pulling colors out of no where- same on the "green" splotches on the 3-tone desert.

Can not wait to see some weathering- unfortunitly the shape some of these curbs are in- I wouldnt be surprised to see you take this all the way back down to the origional concrete! Laugh [(-D]

Have fun at the inlaws! The dial-up sounds like a blast!

whooommmp Black Eye [B)]... whoooommpp whoooommp Black Eye [B)].....ouch!!! Dead [xx(] damn dude...i said i was my own worst critic!!! Evil [}:)] never have i had it put so bluntly b4...LOL!! that one's gonna take awhile for the sting to go away... Laugh [(-D]

n/p about the shingle's guys. recommend what i did was take a rough grit sand paper to the edges (if u cut it to shape/size)...oh and use the back side guys!!! Dunce [D)] dont think that one needs explanation!! it paints nice, washes fine...have to control the rips and such so you dont over do it or rip the thing in half!! that's it...no real work involved! oh btw, you might want to spray some white glue solution or something to the "good side" (the side not being used ut would be face up on a roof), those little "rocks" continuously fall out and maybe with a fixative on them it wont happen as much! just a thought!

blown up septic tank.....you guys!!!!

you should just recreate junkyards or blown up septic tanks! That's w/in your grasp .....

haaahahahahahah I'm adding one of these blown up septic tanks to my first Iraq dio! haahahahaha

But yeah -no one here's pulling you leg, this is great! And don't let model talk you into speeding things up, you're moving faster than my pase- he's just crazy!!

I agree on the shingle- dad's got a bunch of the old tar type, going to using this in the future!

AAAwwwwww..... you GOT me!!! Ok, Ok .... your model just STINKS camo! Is it a dio or a garbage can! You should take it outside and BBQ it ..... no wait!, keep it on your workbench and BBQ it! That way your bench gets it too and you can never again create such horrid work! IF you must build, you should just recreate junkyards or blown up septic tanks! That's w/in your grasp .....

... your work IS good, camo. Really good. I just wish you would hurry up and finish the base already so I can see your figure work!

Nice catch, again BTW, on the shingle. I've added it to my "cheat book" of methods.

Good to know- in that case, then yeah!! This is awesome!! I just wanted to make sure it wasn't like black sharpie pen or something-

That not being the case- this is one of the nicer 1/35 scale roadways I've seen!! Well done camo

no p.o. they're very much 3d. i actually tore the shingle in spots making the "cracks". the one in the middle after making the "hole" i took my exacto to and made them but only the one in the middle! because i posted on dio forum too i wanted to only show "top" view of the road and not the building! hence the more "2d-ish" look!

Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]!! That looks awesome!

The only thing I'm wondering is how 2D the holes and cracks look? Are they drawn/painted on? Or did you actually slice little channels and a pit into the tar backing? They look awesome in these pictures- I'm just making sure they don't look too "2D" in real life.

haha oh it's not a problem, I think he's the reason a lot of people are into dio modeling, -not most, not all, but a good bit. I know he brought me into it.

I like his work and he has a lot of good techniques, but the book in 10 years old, a lot has changes. For what it is though, I think it's great, I have a few books by Verlinden and I think Paine did a much nicer job at the step by step. That being said, I understand where you're coming from- and dont worry! We're still friends haha

thanks for holding your breath model! haha

and thanks camo, glad to hear I got a few people interested in it. I'm looking forward to seeing your shingle road- those palm trees should look real nice and fit right in.

I can kind of describe a shadow box, but Hans is the go-to guy for anything Shep Paine haha

Hey- now that I'm home- I have the Dio book- let me read you an exerpt...

"A shadow box is a diorama set into a box and viewed through an opening in one side, and its effect is essentially that of a three-dimensional painting. In many ways the shadow box is the ultimate form of the diorama. This is because of the degree of control over all aspects of the display that a shadow box affords the modeler. In a shadow box you can dictate the viewing angle, lighting conditions, and, most importantly, the atmosphere and mood of the scene."

-Sheperd Paine "How to Build Dioramas"

If you want some scans of the chapter let me know- it's about 9 pages but has some great diagrams and photos of shadow boxes. Shadow boxes lend themselves perfectly to photography as they control the lighting, having their own stand-alone system, plus the figures are usually arranged in a photographically astetic group that would follow the rule of thirds etc. Very dramatic stuff- maybe tomorrow I'll scan a few pictures just for the heck of it, there's some really cool ideas.

HA! I'm not holding my breath ... I'd have been dead 4 times over by now!!! (j/k)

I've kind-of taken a step back at the moment ... 1) Trying to figure out if I'm going to put the LEDs in the torso or not and 2) mt FO keeps breaking on me ... inside the figure! RRRRrrrrr....

If I'm going to place the LEDs in the torso then that's going to step thing up, and I'm not quite ready to be there yet. (i.e. I'm going to have to starting wiring things together as I'm putting the figures together.)

I took all the FO out of my first figure ... I'm going to try running all the FO through heat shrink tubing to see if that will help give it some stability.

I also need to sit down and draw/ think out my wiring diagrams. I don't want to get into the figures and not know what I'm doing ....

.... oh, wait .... I'm already doing that!

Yeah I like that idea even better, but I agree, sounds like one more level of complexity this dio didn't need.

Just keep taking those small steps I guess, one at a time and after a while it'll start getting easier and under control I would think.

I'm back in town btw. Working on the faces and weapons for my 1/16 scale Marines, will post ASAP.
