Just like you havoc, when the series 1st came on the scene, I was heavily into armor/military vehicles and I thought the SF3D was trying to compete, fact vs fiction.  I was not impressed and until very recently did I have any interest @ all.  Now I luv these  things, have spent a fortune collecting kits and keep looking for that one I do not have!!!!!!!  I am impressed by the detail, and @ one time I was a avaid military figure painter and these suit that bill to.  I have not posted a painted face yet, but it will be done ole school w/oils.  And I would fancy a guess to say the average age in this GB is 30-35 and up.  Hope to see some young'ins jump in too.Propeller

I think quiet a few of us here within a similar age-group.

Also recall a SF3D kit sitting at my LHS and asking about it and staff said that is a new kit from Japan and it rocks. Bought it, build it and loved it, went back to the shop and said I want more of it. Was told to wait   4~ 6-months for next shipment to come in.

Online shopping, etc didn't exist, all we had was e-mail and BBS.

Aaah, the olden days.

Similar here. Tongue Tied  Eyes and hand/eye coordination are not what they used to be.

Wanted to head out to look for a Nitto SF3D kit, but realised I need to work on a comissioned Moebius Viper MkII.

Well that was enlightening, I am the big double nickle and it all works just fine thank ya.  I can see good and clear as long as I have my glasses on, admit I have a hard time @ 100 yards, the bulls eye gets a bit outta whack!  When I wake up in the AM, I jump right up out of bed and w/a bent posture fumble my way to the lou, finally after a strong cup of joe I am ready for another fun day @ work (7 mores years and I can build 24/7).  I seem to be fine after work until I get home and set down in the recliner, seems after that my body says, I have had enough of hauling your big butt around today and I am going to stay right here!  Eat (hope heart burn stays away), a little modeling time, then off to bed to roll and tumble until blissful sleep and then another sunny dayCool.  To be honest, I am thankful for everyday I get on this side of eternity.  @55 I have all my parts, nothing has ever been cut out, never spent a single night in a Hospital as a patient, when I go for a physical I get a big your fit as a fiddle from the Doc.  I admit I am over weight, but @55 I do the job of a 20 year old!  That keeps me going.  @97 my ole Granny was still planting a garden and canning!  And smeagol, your  a whipper snapper, but U are and will be the Historian of the group, vast knowledge in a young man.  I am pleased we have such a diverse group in this, will be interesting to see the different takes because of the age groups.  Now fellas, we got to get some young people involved, see who you can wring their little necks err I mean encourage to join. LOL  Happy modeling on this bright sunny day and may the bird of paradise not take a dump on your heads!!!!!!!!

I first saw the SF3D kits at a local game shop I frequented back in the mid 80's. We were really into Steve Jackson's Games OGRE/GEV and Battlesuit, so I was very keenly interested... unfortunately I was also mostly broke at the time.

Then just about the time I bought my first airbrush, Nitto began re-releasing these kits. It was... Cosmic. Cool

Cosmic J has so graciously helped to design a GB logo for us and it is easy to add,  copy the photo off of his or my post, send to your photo image host, then copy and paste go to your profile and under signature, paste the photo and it will transfer to all postings you have posted.  Neat and please be sure to thank Cosmic J for his help in this. I LIKE THIS! Yes

After you have added your GB logo to your signature and you are ready to post, I am not sure if we keep this thread going with all the posting, or do you post your own WIP thread for the GB.  This is something I am not sure of and you guys that have been longer than me may be of help in this regards.  I know on other Forums, ea. individual starts his own thread for the WIP, but if you wish, then keep posting here.  That is up to you, I just thought it would cut down trying to go thru a single thread w/ever how many post to it ea, day.  Suggestions will be most welcomed.  I am well pleased with all the info, support and work of those who are helping with this.  I have never done this before and I for one am excited to see what you wonderful bunch of Geeks do w/this this, oh you going to luv this, one of my grands came into my study and saw the AFS and said oh look paw paw plays with little spacemen!Clown

Hope today has been a day of rest for everyone.  I thought I would post where I am @ as of 5:00 today.  All PE joints have been coated w/vallejo matt varnish.  This will seal the poly plastic and allow paint to stick w/o peeling off, @ least that's the idea!  Next the complete suit has been wiped down w/ Mr. Hobby thinner to clean any oils from my hands from handling, helps to adhere Mr. Surfacer Primer 1200 prepping the plastic this way.  Also notice I have added the attachment points f/the hydraulic cables.  These are really turned alum. collars for use on Gundams, but they look cool used like this as well.  I cut the windshield/screen what ever you wish to call it, down to allow it to be still seen 3/4's of the way open.  I want to display the face shield up but the individual caught ready to fight.  I feel that if given this type suit, one would have the face shield down for battle, the rest of the time, open for the fresh air.  I imagine it gets a bit stuffy inside this tin can, we sure did in tanks and kept the hatches open as much as we could!  I have drilled and added a brass rod to the right bottom of the foot to mount the AFS to a block of wood to help hold while I paint.  Well that's about it and after posting this, I will go outside and spray prime this little bad boy down.Cool

Geez, I go on vacation, and you guys go and start a groupbuild! Is it too late to join in? I would love to post some pics of my Lunadiver and its S.A.F.S. suits, which currently sit at about 80% finished.

G.M., your suit looks awesome, keep up, as always, the great work.

Hello Klik and Ti4019, glad to hear from both of you and welcome you to the Ma.K GB.  I do believe I am going to switch this thread over to the Group Builds of the FSM's Forum.  So if that is cool with everyone, we will now meet on the Group Builds under the same heading Maschinenkrueger Group Build.  I again encourage everyone to add the wonderful logo that Cosmic J has worked to bring us to your signature on your profile.  After all, since he took the time to design and put into place, why not use it.  I for one am thankful for his help and hope ea. who use, will tell him so.  Now, we have talked a bunch and discussed many things so far, but this month is running and day light is burning, so lets get to snipping plastic and smearing glue.  Just remember to post your threads on Group Builds.  Good building too all.  The rabbit has left the gate!!!!!!!!!!Hmm

That is great news smeagol, makes you wonder about our Postal System some times.  I too have had a package get to me faster from Japan than one coming form Washington State?  Go figure.  But anyway, glad you got her and yea, I want the 1/16th suit too!  Please post your start on the Group Builds Section of FSM's Forum.  I have already made the 1st post and everything is ready for all to start posting their WIP.  I can not wait to see what you do with this figure.  For those who read this and have not done a 1/20th figure, it is harder than one thinks to get right, but after seeing smeagol's work, I know he is going to do her justice.  This thread can still be used if you want to keep posting completed subjects, but please for all future post of a WIP go to FSM's Group Builds as listed in the Forum guide.  Thanks for sharing your good news smeagol, now stop drooling all over her and lets see some photos of her!Cool

Thats a Roger, that is what I was talking about, it is hard to convey human skin tones, we tend to think in a single tonal sight, but skin is very difficult to realistically capture,  And then we get to the eyes, the windows to the soul can be a daunting task!  I painted Military Figures for years and never did feel that I had conquered the ability to paint a human face the way I wanted.  I for one am looking forward to this WIP smeagol.

Sure, I posted on the Group Build section yesterday for the start of the build, but so far no-one other than my 1st reply to start has been posted.  By all means do, post a photo of the subject you are going to build and give a little back ground.  All others please do the same who wanted to do this please!

try using Reaper gaming paints for skin tones, its all I use anymore and I paint full nudes sometimes. Very thin layers not slopped on the way enamels are gobbed on is the key. Ill have up to 30 layers on a  figure when Im done but they are micro thin.

Ill add the GB logo after I complete and submit. I have never believed in displaying something I had yet to earn.

OK guys, we got to get off this thread and onto the Ma.K GB, you will as already has been explained go the FSM's Group Build Forum.  Any and all are welcome. there is no deadline except that the GB will end 1-8-11, so you have until then to post up to.  As far as the Logo, it is up to you if you wish to use, I will say however it is not intended as something you must earn, by using it, it was intended to ID you as being apart of the Ma.K GB, but what ever you wish if at the 1st or the last after you have completed your build, that is fine.  Just please, stop posting here and use the thread I have already set up for this.  Thanks and I hope to see you all soon on the other channel!  What I would like for ea. to do since you are posting a WIP, post a photo of the kit box photo to give everyone a idea of just what you are thinking about building and if started, post a photo of where you are @.  This will help to get things rolling.Hmm

My kit for our little GB will be the Nitto re-issue of the Raccoon, in 1/20 scale. It's the recon armor for the Mercenary forces in the M.aK. universe, covered w/ special sensors, and having certain stealth modifications. The gun arm was also removed, making this a two handed SAFS variant.

Back when Nitto re-popped the MaKs, I bought and built every one them. Most of them came w/ visible pilot figures, and the juxtaposition of Man and Machine appealed to me, therefore I built most of them w/ the pilot showing.

However, the figures in the Nitto kits were... somewhat lacking. Detail was soft, they had molding issues, and sometimes they were barely recognisable as human. It took a lot of work to get them to look good.

So, I decided that I wanted to build an SAFS without the pilot showing. Since I was going to make it a pure Mech build, I bought the most non-human looking SAFS of them all - The Raccoon.

However, the high quality of the other Nitto releases had made me a bit of a snob. When I opened my new Raccoon, I found the kit parts to be covered w/ flash and sink marks. GASP!

Thusly disappointed, I tossed my Raccoon into the closet to be used for spares.

In fact, a few years later when building a Jerry, I used the upper sensor array from my Raccoon to detail it. in those heady days when MaKs were everywhere and only cost $11 (yes, you read that right) I scavenged a bunch of my kits, including most of a SAFS Fireball for that same Jerry model.

However, times have changed, and I realise that I was probably too hard on this little model (not to mention the fact that the cost of these kits has at least tripled), so I decided to give it another go.

Now, Nitto produced a number of the SAFS kits, including the Prowler - a Fireball variant covered w/ additional sensors. A little know fact, the Prowler kit contained all the sprues from all the various SAFS kits, including the Racoon's upper sensor housing. So, I'll be scrounging the parts from my Prowler kit, and possibly making use of the leftover parts from my Fireball kit as well.

Some of these kits also came w/ short lengths of corrugated vinyl tubing that was used to cover up the connecting parts inside the limbs. I actually prefer this covering to the current vogue of using putty to re-sculpt the joints. Fortunately, one of my kits came w/ a spare set of these little bits of tubing, so I'll use those on my model.

...and that's about as far as I've progressed. Cool

Ok guys I keep hearing of this build so thaught I would throw in for it. Trying to find a Gustav, a Firefly, or a Jerry/Super Jerry. Also might have a little surprise down the road. I like to lurk out here in the shadows the strike when least expected.

Outstanding Cosmic J, I am not sure which one of these super great kits you will post as a WIP, but can you do me a favor, I have moved this Ma.K GB to this location:  Go to Forum & Community, after that you will see the thread labeled Group Builds under the headings of the subjects of the Forum, click Group Builds and you will find the place I have started the WIP GB f/Ma.K.  I thought I was doing the right thing by officially starting this there, but I seemed to have caused some confusion for everyone.  I believe this is what and where a GB is to be conducted, but if I am wrong, please inform me and we can do this where ever you say??????? HELP
