She's coming together beautifully.  Can't wait to see the setting you come up with as her final display.  Even standing alone it's a stunning piece.

Remember this image?

That is what I was shooting for...

1. Like TB and I said-- it will be dark, and it is dark. It is what I wanted and even the movie prop is dark under bright light.

2. The glass window is there just for show, at this point.

3. I took Capn's advice and used a sort of hull red for the base. I didn't have any good paints to buy as such, so, I mixed my own.  I used Tamiya Dull Red (LP-18) and Tamiya Brown (LP-25). It came out pert near a 1 to 1 mix. That produced a nice hull red that leaned towards rust.

4. The magic came when I used Vallejo Dark Gray Wash. I at first tried to selectively apply the wash over plate joins but I quickly learned doing that left it looking like I seletively applied wash to the plate joins. Removing the excess puts you at risk of rubbing through. I then applied a generous helping over the entire model. That was the ticket. That took the rather bright orange base to a nice brown rust. The images are close to reality but not entirely. But-- it is close enough and the maybe 10% tonal difference doesn't skew it that terribly.

5. I sealed the model with MRP gloss clear; applying it so as not to make it too too shiny. Once again-- a shout out to the MRP product. It sprayed like silk straight from the bottle and the gloss builds up slowly allowing you to get the finish you want.

6. Using the straws for masking worked like a charm. I had to do a little bit of touchup  in a few spots, but it was minimal. Mainly for where liquid mask leached under.

I will work on installing the gator eyes next.

I guess that is that.

G'day Bako, sorry I haven't stopped by for a while. I've been a bit busy with life the universe and everything.

No worries, Ferg. I know how that is!

The Naughto is looking awesome.

Thanks, Mate!

I love your builds mate. They are just so inspiring, as is the subject matter. Your imagination and creativity levels are through the roof fella.

You sir-- are too kind. I wish we didn't live a world away because I can see you'd be a good friend to have around. I think we'd be up late telling many a yarn.

Hey,Backster!

Yeah, I understand where you're coming from. I had a model of the Machine from Lost in space(The large one) I just couldn't clutter a nice model with the Monster and Rock! Like right now, I am in a different model mode on the side. The Shark model. Can't bring myself to add the Diver and the Cage! Unless, I put the diver's legs sticking out of the shark's mouth? Hmmmmm!

Mr Finishing Surfacer 1500 applied. It went swimmingly. Next a very light sanding to knock the grain down some. Though, it's not too bad as it. Then it's onto color.

Maybe I should leave it white. It can be an albino Nautilus. Funny thing is I was gonna make the squid a menacing albino. I have pretty much decided I won't be using the squid. I mocked it up and I am not feeling it.

That's that.

Howdy !

I have been following along, but silently hiding in the corner ... over there .... by the "bullion express"  parts box...

She's looking GOOD Baxter, can't wait to see her in full paint.

I know I have been absent from this build thread. I "wanted" to say it's because I wanted others to have a chance to voice there thoughts without all my Fantastical ,thread derailing input....

But, in reality ( someplace i'v heard of but never been there ) I have been tied up with work, and helping  my wife. She broke her wrist a month ago and I find myself getting up earlier than normal to help with her projects before I go to work.

I'm. Tiiiiiiiiiirrrrrrreeeeeddddd !!!!!

I promise I will check back in every few days, .... Instead of months ...

Hey Tim, Howdy.

Sorry to hear about your wife's wrist. Hope it gets better soon.

Yeah!

You guys and gals in that part of the state got the good stuff too fast. Ours was delayed and came down actually gentler! But, our yard still looks like the bottom of a parched earth lake. The rain couldn't soak through the hard, sun baked soil fast enough. That's your flash flood makers. Ours just ran down in the cracks and dissappeared altogether, I imagine the Edwards Aquifer here is low too!

Well... the next step of masking is done.

Here is a tip for when masking the exterior lights. I found that a 6mm drink straw worked perfect for masking. It slips over the glass and seats into the groove between the lens and the housing. There is a slight tension with it though, so I had to hold it in place, then work a small amount of liquid mask inside the tube. Maybe 5 minutes and I could let go. Then, I  work a bunch more LM for final masking.

It might sound like too much work but working tape into that groove and with the tight quarters, it was near impossible, and my best efforts gave poor results. Using the straw should produce a clean and consistent demarcation. Anyhow, that is the plan.

So, some final join filling, cleanup, and review, then I can paint. With luck, I might get primer on it this weekend.

CapnMac82

Nautilus progresses!

Sunday night & Monday were interesting.  We went from around a half inch of monthly rainfall to the "second wettest August" on record, with 10.47" falling at the airport.

(SE Dallas about 25 miles away got 15" of rain--we had near continuous flash flood warnings until abotu Noon, Monday.)

So, the 10.47 is the second highst daily rainfall recorded, and beat the previous record, 10.43 from October 2018.

There was some standing water in the yard on Monday, but, by four in the afternoon the parched earth had absorbed it all.

I was wondering if I was going to need a submarine.

Jill still does not approve of thunder.

Capn, that is a ton of rain you guys got in such a short period of time. I had seen flood footage in Dallas. It looked pretty bad. Feast or famine!

Poor Jill. This reminds me of a story. My parents had a dog that liked to bolt out of the yard. So, they got an electronic fence. On a visit there my brother was telling me that the dog was going crazy during a lightning storm. They had him in the garage and he tells me it was so bad that the dog was jumping on top of stacked boxes. I am thinking... THAT does not sound right. Then it hit me. I wonder if the electrical storm induced the dogs collar to shock. My guess? That is exactly what happened. Told my brother... take the collar off during storms. Beer

Back to flooding. Joe Rix lives in Moab. Moab had a bad flood event too. Wondering if anyone has heard from him on that. I'd write him myself but the PM function is STILL BROKEN! Shaking my head.

Greg

She really looking great, Steve. Yes Really like the pic a page or two back taken from the stern, it's cool.

I've come to like the look of unpainted PE on unpainted models. Must be from looking at so many sales/promotional pics from Eduard and so forth.

Hey thanks, Greg. Good to hear from you. I have been loosely following your work on the Formula 1 GB. There is nice work being done there. I like what you did on the engine. That looks really good how you have it built up and painted.

If I wasn't so tied up with things I would have joined that one too.

Ahoy!

They could be spots to shine across the windows thereby Blinding the Sea Life from Seeing in. Pointed across the glass they would, To Sealife, Create a fog!

Ahoy back!

You might have something there in that it might represent additional lighting. Good thought.

This was tough to photograph a good color rendition but it is what it is.

Regarding paint. I used the same paint and process as used on the parlor windows.

Few things to note:

1. TB is right what he said that it will be a dark boat. To mix things up a bit, as you can see, I painted the railings, steps, and even the foot rungs in an aged brass. With that said, I didn't want it tinsel looking. Instead, I want the pieces to blend, subtly. Thus the dark brass.

2. Don't ask me what the pieces to the left are. I have no clue what their function might be. These get mounted to the hull, one on each side of the parlor windows. I thought they looked plain and odd, so, I added domed structures to them. At the least it makes them a little more interesting. This was why I had to go into the Bullion Express box. What I needed was in there.

So... I will leave the railing in a safe place and until the end of the build. With all the handling yet to come, I'd for sure accidentally mash them if installed sooner.

Well... I think from here it is time to start masking the hull.

End of update.

"Hmmm, I like both ideas for the skylight both TB and the Captain."

Same here. Will be a tough call.

More work being done on the PE. The rungs are removed from the sprue, cleaned up, and secured for paint. The railings are secured and ready for paint as well. I will start painting them today. When that is done, move towards painting the boat.

My path for the base is still unclear. I may just mount it to a base via brass posts and call it done. The sea creature thing is just not speaking to me. We shall see I guess.

Btw Gam. I had to open the orange bomber box last night looking for something, aka the Bullion Express. It saw the light of day. Like in the movie the fly, it was saying, help me. Help me.

Yeah!

You got that blessed rain, all we got was that earthy of imminent rain without even a spurtz. Just that glorious smell of nature and dark Clouds. But the Skylight would be uncovered, The Salon Windows are, soooo--- Besides, it would break up a large area of steel, iron and rust? Colors, on top!

Oh, just to let you know, based on my money thingies, $25.00 and I can pull the trigger. The lights fell into my lap from a model railroader! I have to budget, even down to the taxes on a subject and shipping. You oughta see these lights.  they ain't as big as a half grain of long grain rice!, Red, White, Yellow and Blue! I think they are for H.O. Scale Emergency vehicles and there's two long paired strips of Clear white ones. About a foot maybe. The colored there at least four of each.

There is a programmable switch for the colored lights from a Police/Ambulance type flash to a wave type effect? I dunno, never worked with them before.
