You never seem to be put off by sincere and helpful comments and Questions.

Heck no! That would be foolish of me. I appreciate the help! If the advice is something I don't want to do, I don't do it. No muss--no fuss.

Sometimes, an off site comment can make Us see what we don't(You know the old "Forest and Trees thing.)

THAT is so TRUE, TB!  It has happened to me many times. That is why I share the good with the bad. More than once a complex problem is solved by another poster. And that is why I go to such detail with my posts. It may help others, and it may help me too. In fact-- here is an example of an innocent comment that you made that helped me:

You made the comment about building this kit and putting it in an aquarium type structure. Remember that I said my idea for a base came to me in the middle of the night? It was a night of sleeplessness. So --I decided to use the time to ponder about the base. In a moment of inspiration an image popped into my mind. The image was of the Nautilus passing by ancient columns. I thought, wait a second... I really like this idea. Then I thought about how I can make or buy the columns. My very next thought was what you said, about an aquarium. Then I thought. Wait a second... I am sure I can find an ornament already made.  And guess what? I did. What I purchased is for aquariums and it is EXACTLY what I envisioned for the base.

So there you go. Even side comments spark inspiration.

Or how about when you asked about the dome structure on the deck? That came out of left field. I am thinking ... yeah. What about that?

That is another GREAT example of something I might have missed. My mind was so deep in the weeds of the build that I was not thinking about that. You brought that to the surface and man-- I am SO GLAD that you did.

I am sure there are other things I have already forgotten. And I really appreciate you encouraging me on. There are times when the build becomes monotonous. Hearing your and others enthusiam pushes me through some of those dark periods. More than once you posted and it revitalized me.

So you keep on commenting. I appreciate it.

Hi!

Hey, even if you don't always build like this, I will support your efforts. I like your Style of building and your Ability to share comments -Good or Bad. A true modeler for sure! You never seem to be put off by sincere and helpful comments and Questions. This makes you a better modeler than some I know.

Thank You for letting me follow you and hearing my comments. Sometimes, an off site comment can make Us see what we don't(You know the old "Forest and Trees thing.) I'm Waiting for the explosive finish, Don't you dare blow that fine Craft up now, or sumpin lyke dat!

Hi!

Hi back!

Tanker-Builder
I don't think I would want that to go near my sailing ship

LOL. So true, TB! This is before sonar and that's the irony of it. Nemo builds his luxurious weapon of war, and it is nearly taken out of commission by a passing artifact! Needless to say, Nemo learns his lesson and he is more careful when skimming along the ocean floor. Wink

The Columns do not deter me from saying this. She, When totally finished, will be awesome!!

Thanks, TB! That means a lot. I am nearing the finish line now and in a few more weeks this project will be done. The next phase of this will be precarious, but fingers crossed.

Thanks for following me with this project and all your support.

She's coming along very nicely- kudos Bakster!!! The base looks really neat too!

Dodgy- congrads! I'm tempted to pick one up myself. Read the novel and saw the Disney movie back as a wee tyke- love them both! But I've got some much stuff on my plate right now I need another project like I need another hole in the head. And if I buy it I know I'll end up starting on it.

am keeping you in suspense about the base. It will be a drip drip of revelation. With all the drips, good thing it is a submarine.  Stay tuned.

Previous post was drip one. Below is drip two.

Let your imagination run wild. More to come as it progresses.

Back to the "Machine: The reels on the side Far left are indeed Cable reels. Intended to draw the old girl up into smaller waters to hide! The overall presentation is awesome.

Shutters are painted with copper, darkened some with wash and paint, then gloss coated. Paints used are Alclad copper, MRP black, Vallejo wash, and MRP clear gloss.

Cable reels are painted with black craft paint, dry brushed Vallejo silver, and then darkened some using Vallejo wash.

I also added more rust to some areas using an old jar of Model Master paint, I think Burnt Umber. I also added more black wash to the grate just aft of the hatch.

Painting the shutters and cable reels dressed things up. Not so unfinished looking as before.

The new pics are great Bakster!

I like the Vallejo washes as well.  I've a got several different colors and use them regularly.  I've found them to be quite versatile as washes, glazes, and even for airbrushing.

Thanks, PG.

I have not tried ABing it. Interesting thought.

The rest is good too.

Well, you are posing a question as a modeler, so, I'm tailoring my answer to that end.

And, having some experience of picking over bottles & tin & pot of paint, and sweating out which wash to use, I try to give a good 2¢ worth.

"Hot Diggety, Gold Plated Dingy!"

Nemo likes extravagance. It's like Emmit Brown in Back to the Future: "I figured, if you are going to build a time machine into a car, why not do it with some style!"

Kind of the same deal here. Wink

Interesting info, TB. Thanks for sharing that. That is what I love most about WIPs. It is what we learn from peoples knowledge. Second to that, the comradery.

Okay! Dodgy!

It's yer turn. let's see what ya got. I still cain't fit er in my Budget Yet!, But we's gittin there! If I can sell some stuff at the next train show(October), she may wind up in my harbor too. I'm still trying to figure out the  Great White Shark. Do I put the diver in the cage or in the shark's mouth? Plus I have NEVER worked with this Vinyly and Resin stuff before. I don't even know what to use for a filler! I do know you use C.A. for the resin. But what do you use for the filler around the soft parts and hard parts on the body of the shark?

Hot Diggety, Gold Plated Dingy!

Now, That's what I am talking abouy! The Reddish tinge is Gorgeous. That baby is coming along Fantastically! Speaking of Ned land, C'mon guys They are in the transitional times between steam and sail. It's Hardtack and Beans and Salt Beef and Pork, still on many ships, Especially Whalers and the like.

Now on Nemo's "Machine", the food was way better, more like the normal food ashore. What's wrong with Bacon and Eggs from the sea? It's out there if you know to look. Can't tell it from it's land based Counterpart.

"Shutters" suffices.  Brass would be good, but  mt reflex would be bronze with a copper or brass wash.

The doohicky at photo left is clearly meant to be a windlass o some sort.  It can be near any metallic color.

The "springs" might be coils of wire rope (might be).  Could be anything you want them to be.  I'm thinking an oily black with a silver or titanium wash.  Perhaps a clear brown oil wash over that (or greeen) to look like it had been submerged a few times.

Hey Capn, that is some good advice. I like the copper/wash idea. The rest is good too. I will see what I can do.

I appreciate it!

Thanks, my Friend.

Greg

That latest round of pics are doing your work some justice, Steve. Good idea using the HDR. Really looking good. YesYes

Hey Greg.  Yeah for in camera HDR processing, not too terrible. It does push the reds though.  I'd probably do better taking bracketed images and process them on my PC. But for this purpose, it did Ok bringing out the weathering and some of the red tone. Albeit, a bit too much red.

Thanks, my Friend.

Speaking of color. I intend to paint the shutters brass. I think that is what Capn called them. You know, the domed structure TB was asking about? There are other structures on that portion of the deck too that look like some sort of cable reeler. They look like springs. Sorry guys, I am not a nautical expert. Some of you might have a better term and description of what they are. But ... what I am driving at is color. What do you guys think? Probably steel? Thoughts?

Installed: Prop, chains, side (floods?)

I used an HDR function on my camera that seems to bring out more weathering detail and the color is a little closer to reality.

I thinki from here I start painting the deck structures.

Life has been throwing some fast balls of late so progress is slow. As minimal as it is, here is what I accomplished:

To add color to the boat, I am making the chains and screw brass. I mentioned using Vallejo wash over Alclad brass. I tell ya, I absolutely love the effect it produces. The image below drops a lot of nuances and sadly, you don't see all the weathering. But...for what it is worth... here it is.

Gamera

I finally got around to watching '20,000 Leagues' again over the weekend. Breakfast looks good but I'm reminded of Ned Land blanching as Nemo describes all the food at his table being various forms of sea life. I always found the scene a little weird, I mean Land is a sailor so he's used to eating fish ain't he?

Gam, that is funny you should say that because I had thought the same thing with that scene. Too funny.

Those photos look great to me Captain! Modern phone cameras are mostly 'idiot proof' even for an idiot as big as me. I'd go with trying to capture what the eye sees although I'm not good enough to adjust photos that much.

I have a 'Creature From the Black Lagoon' figure that I want to do all in greyscale since the movie was in B&W. Not sure when I'll get to it, should be an interesting challenge.

Uh Oh!

I spent two seasons sitting in that Structure! Didn't recognize it at first. I earned my Post Doc.There! Lessee, does that make me an official "AGGIE" ? The Litter? Is part of the story, Why the negatism? I used to see stuff like that all the time. When I left I would put some other trash in my throwaway sack. Help Keep the place cleaner!
