Hey Capn, I just had a thought. What I think would be really cool is to build this scene into a shadow box

I had a similar idea at the time.  I have to admit to not being familiar enough with the various Jupiter kits, to know if one could be a suitable donor to start from.

I recall several full-interior builds, both here at FSM and elsewhere, so, it's possible to super detail things.

Now, if the 3d files were available, it might be cool to build the thing to replicate a studio set.  So, having the front half only would "make sense" at first glance.  The PotA backdrop could then be stood up "flat" in front, to "sell" the thing, too.

A twist on the notion of a traditional shadow box, too.

Hey Capn, I just had a thought. What I think would be really cool is to build this scene into a shadow box. Years back FSM had a short article where a person shadow boxed the sinking Titanic. I thought that was the coolest thing, and I still do. Image below.

That is just awseome to me. I don't know if the above is like this, but my vision would be a shoebox sort of shadow box where it is entirely enclosed, with a viewing port on one end. Of course, it would be bigger than a shoebox. You mentioned the Jupiter kit and I have seen some builds with all the control panels lighted like the real thing. You build half the Jupiter. I think this would be a fun project.

Now... someone get building it! Lol.

LIS meets POTAs. I like it!

 

 

There's a reasonably good kit of the Juipter II, with all manner of cool acessories available.

Tough part would be finding a suitable Statue of Liberty for the diorama :-)

 

Probably an easy task with a 3d printer. Guessing, someone has a file out there. A challenge for someone up to the task!

That is a hoot, Gam. You know that early explorers found tracks up there.

Thanks for the 'LiS' video Bakster, it's interesting there how Harris became a 'guest star' on every single episode. I may have said it before but if they had stuck with the more serious theme of the first season I'd have liked it more but I'm not sure it would have lasted for more than one or two seasons. 

You are probably right. The good ones didn't last long.

Sorry to hear about Drake's passing. I've had bouts when I read a lot of military SF but I like stuff about exploration more. Guess I've read about a half dozen of Drake's Slammers and other works, try them Phoenix I think you'll like them. I get a bit bored with military SF because it always seems the same thing- a small group of good guys in some desparate fight against a huge bunch of bad guys.

H'wood optioned Hammer's Slammers a long time ago (per David Drake) and has kept the IP shelved for no obvious reason. 

It was long enough ago that it was before the notion of createing a 'universe' that other authors could build upon and write withing (although a few did, with permisson).  This probably tangles up getting ahold of the IP to make aseries out of it.

It's part of why Drake never optioned out any of his Cinnabar Navy series, too.

But, in thinking about all this, the notion came that a person could base a series in the 'Slammer's 'universe' by telling tales of the other mercenary outfits, and without stepping on the IP.  So, a person could tell a very modern version of Much Ado About Nothing, with the Mercenary troop standing in for Don Pedro's Jannisaries of Messina.  With them returning to a "home base" planet filling in for Messina, and driving the plot line of Claudio finally being able to marry Hero, and all the rest.  There's no reason to not use Elizabethian cadence in the speehes, since we are presuming the far future and all the changes that language would endure, and twisted by relativity.  Which would allow Beatrice and Bendict to be far more mature, and more well-honed in their scorn and acrimony.

Best part, the entire tale would need no huge SFX budget, as a home world might be very primitive and 'natural' rather than all "spaced up" (a feature of many of Drakes "space novels").

I'm sorry to hear he passed.  He was a prolific writer.  I never picked up any of the series though.  I was too busy being sucked into Jerry Pournelle's "Falkenberg's Legion" books.

The publisher Baen Books has several of David Drakes books available free as an ebook download or read via web browser.

You're definitely not one of the casualties.  You're still working the build.  Perhaps it's more like being on the injured list. And despite that, you're still working to achieve the goal of making the summit. 

Thanks for sharing the link about why Lost in Space changed.  That was an intersting look at inside of network television policy and it was fun listening to the interview clips with smith.  I also watched their videos about why the original Battlestar Galactica was cancelled after one season.  I wonder where they get their information from.

It's a shame they took the series in a direction that even as a young kid, I thought it became lame. I am one of 5 kids and we all looked forward to the show. One by one we dropped out of watching it. But I liked the hardware.

Bakster, sorry to hear about all the challenges with the paint.  However, the pictures of  where you've taken it since are looking nice!  I have zero recollection of what it's supposed to look like, but I like what you're doing. 

I must say the new paint booth doubles as an excellent photo booth.

And remember "Perfection is the enemy of the done."  I have to keep telling myself that or nothing ever gets done.  lol

Saw--over in Armor--that a company is promising to to kit out an M-116 Husky in 1/35. 

And given how often the Husky was fitted out as an Arctic or extreme environment vehicle, it might make a great pairing with a Chariot.

The Husky being a touch more "soft skinned" than, say, an M-114 or a LAV-C or the like.  Mind, perhaps a pairing with a LVT-5 might be cool, though.

 

 

Hey Capn,  that is very interesting. You are right. It could make for an interesting kitbash. Or, just build it as is, is cool enough too! I like it.

I'm in on this one Steve. Gotta get all caught up but this islooking like it is coming along GREAT so far. 

They look good to me Bakster! Every little bit is step forward! 

Seats look good!

One thing I didn't think through enough was masking. It will be easier to mask over the black seat cushions and then paint the surrounding chair, verses the inverse. It can be done for sure, but it would be painstaking, times 6 chairs. Forget it. So, as much as I hate do overs, I stripped the orange and started over.  

1. Painted with MRP black.

2. I dry brushed a custom lighter shade of black using Tamiya acrylic. The purpose is to simulate color wear as the Robinsons bounce around in their seats during long Sunday drives. Or perhaps, while looking for a good place to dump Smith.

Aside from that. It gives the seat realism and it knocks down that 2 dimensional appearance. 

3. I blended the two layers by spraying another layer of MRP on top. A very light coat so as not to kill the color wear.

And the snail crawls on.

Speaking of eclipse. I don't recall what area of Texas you are in, and Texas is a big state. Are you in a direct path for the 4/8 eclipse? If not, will you travel to get there? How far roughly?

 

 

DFW gets a direct overlay for totatlity.  Will be about 1340 local time.

If next month, and not last Friday, as my travel-addled brain convinced me.

A video came across my radar yesterday that encapsulates why the TV series turned from a more serious program to a campy silly one. Kind of interesting. Thought I'd share.
