The Starfleet Museum group build
Posted by Woody on Saturday, January 15, 2005 11:32 PM
This is the Starfleet Museum
group build.

The rules for this build are very simple. You must pick a ship
from the website "The Starfleet Museum". There
are no set scales or material limitations. So get on over to
http://www.starfleet-museum.org/ and pick your project.
The vessel you pick will be displayed in this post so all can
see what we are doing. Start as soon as your ready and we'll
wrap this one up on June 1st.Wink [;)]

Would my already started Daedalus scratchbuild fit under your rules? It's not one of the Museum's original designs, but it does appear there.

If it's on the site it's in! Wink [;)] I'd be honored if you joined us Lauren. By the way the good old TOS Enterprise and Klingon D-7 can be found at the Museum, so if anybody wants to build those that's perfectly fine. The more the merrier. Big Smile [:D]

Very cool choice Matt! One of these days I'll have to try a Pyotr Velikiy Class.

I'm sure he will show up sooner or later. Why not just drop him an email?

LOL! Hi there Masao. Love the GB badge thanks.
The question I had about the PV is the bridge and nacelles. Given time line it looked like in a couple of drawings to have the taller bridge and nacelles like the pilot version of the Enterprise but all of the CG images have the later version. Not that its a big deal but with both sets of parts available in the Polar Lights TOS Enterprise kit and the PV will be in the same scale(kit parts will make life easier) I thought I would ask and see before the glue comes out. Big Smile [:D]

I think that like Constitution, Pyotr Velikiy was updated as new technology was introduced. When launched it probably had the 1st-pilot–style nacelles and bridge, then got the production-style bridge and nacelles sometime around 2264 (i.e., first season of Star Trek). I personally like the sleeker production style, but both configurations existed at different times.

Perfect! Thanks for the quick reply. I liked the production look as well so I'll go that route.
I have the layout for it done and started the saucer section today. This is going to be a fun one with all the diferent shapes to the top and bottom sides of the saucer.Big Smile [:D] Tonight I'll start working on the upper layers of the saucer. I think the best way to go about the bottom is to first build up the secondary hull so it can blend in a little better. Thanks again Masao.

I am in but still having trouble picking an easy one for a first time scratchbuilder with no special machines. Everything I see has nice rounded edges. It looks like there are about 7 types that seem like their beginner type builds. They are as follows: Asia Class, Moska Class, Al Burak Class, Space Staions of either G or J, San Fransisco Class, UFP Daedalus Class, or the Wasp Class. Does anyone have any suggestions on which of these would be easily built. I figure trips to some arts and craft stores, hardware store, and sporting goods stores (for ping pong balls) might be appropriate. It is tough deciding which to do. I am eager to learn how to scratchbuild and what techniques are involved.

Quick update. Here is the saucer section of the Pyotr Velikiy:

This shot shows the back edge a little better:

Here is the build up of the top side:

I decided to go with a skin over frame for the short secondary and this is the frame:

Here are the parts on top of the drawings. The nacelles are from Polar Lights TOS Enterprise kit:

Well back to workBig Smile [:D]

Hey Snoopy. Not saying you have to build this one but heres a plan view for one that might help set up a project. Also some parts ideas that can help, Easter eggs are some what out of the stores now but check the second hand stores as they usally have bags full of them. Don't forget about the hardware stores for tubing, pvc pipe and tons of pre-shaped plastic parts for plubing ect.

I would say the Daedalus and Al Burak classes are very doable. The Asia class is kind of deceptive. It looks so familiar in form that one might be fooled into thinking that it could be easily converted from the good ole Connie. The Romulan era UFP ships also have some great starter potential.
Snoopy remember to break your project up into it's base componets and treat each of these as a model unto itself. See Matt's wonderful example above.

Hey, Snoopy! A lot of the Romulan War-era ships are based on spheres and cylinders, so they were fairly easy to draw and I'd think they'd be fairly easy to scratchbuild. Wasp (an early postwar Starfleet ship) also has a sphere for a primary hull (this was my first design), so also shouldn't be too hard. The Asia class was actually designed by Bernd Schneider, so is not quite built in the style.

Maxx: The progress on the PV looks great!

Note to all: If you have any questions or need any supplementary schematics or enlarged graphics (ship markings, insignias for model bases), please contact me.

This looks like the kick in the pants I need to finish up a Torsk -class ship I started a long time back. There is a picture of most of the parts at the Modelers and Hobby Forum-
http://groups.msn.com/ModelersAndHobbyForum/starfleetmuseumship.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=537
I'll have to do some digging to find it, but it's just about ready for final assembly and finishing If I can remember that far back. And worse, today running around town and digging through dumspters I found an emergency light lens and a plastic cover for a combination lock file cabinet that make a dandy saucer- I'm picturing a cross between a Paris class and a Piotr Veliky...

Thankyou again for the feedback and help. I do have another question for you on the PV Masao. It has to do with the two bumps on the bottom. I marked it in the pics is this an optical illusion from the front of the saucer or separate protrusion detail on the flat section toward the rear?:

Many thanks,
Matt

I'm not quite sure what you're asking. This pic is pretty close to what I intended the bottom of the disk to look like: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v22/Masao/PV_wip_011.jpg

I haven't built anything for years (I just draw now) but I'm thinking about trying something small and simple, maybe a Moskva or Comet. If I do, I'll probably be needing a lot of advice from you guys.

WOW...Bummer...I'll have to re-work the bottom. Some how I missed the 3D image of the bottom and went with the conversation we had last year about the PV so I tried to interpret from the 4 view schematics and went with a reversal of the top side on the bottom. I'll switch to the full dome and two small bumps. Thanks so much for you help and patients.

Thanks guys for the feedback and looking forward to seeing what you bring to the build Steven.

Snoopy:
The Bison class and all of it's variants are pretty darn simple- hemispheres, tubes, and spheres, mainly. Just look around your parts box, the dollar store, and the toy section of the thrift store and see what looks like a likely part. Spend some time playing with the shapes you have and something will start to make sense. Follow the link to my Torsk parts and page back a few images and you'll see what I started with. Hope this helps,
Andrew

maxx1969, your Pyotr Velikiy class looks "ochen' chorosho." I'm impressed. As for my entry in the Starfleet Museum Group Build - the Daedalus Class - I have scrapped all of my first attempt save the nacelle, as the patterns were not up to scratch. I began a new secondary hull this evening and hope to post some pics later today (Monday). Must get to bed now. Ciao!

First thing a great big THANK YOU Big Smile [:D] to Masao and Woody for their help on the bottom detail. I pryed off the old bottom detail (note to self: Less super glue!) and after clean up made the new dome on the bottom as well as the "TWO" smaller domes. This is about as close as I can get to the 3D model from the pic. I do plan on widening the back of the sensor section as it does appear to be more pronounced than mine.

Thanks again for the help and feedback,
Matt
