Looks like a beautiful model and R/C-ing it looks definitely in the realm of possibility. I gave up the idea of R/C-ing being impossible when I saw two 1/72 (yes I said 1/72) scale WWI fighters (an SE-5 vs a Fokker D-7) dogfighting in a friend's living room. How big is the model? I have the 1/35th PT boat that I am R/C-ing with two throttles and the Revell/Germany Hermann Marwede kit that I am also R/C-ing both the ship and the satellite boat it carries on board. You gotta love those Germans. They named the ship after the man who started the Lager brewing industry in Germany.

It is important to know where your priorities are. As Ben Franklin once said, "Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy."

Hi James I have just posted my self as a new member on the introduce yourself section.

The reason for my interest is that I saw you are building the 1/35 S 100 a build that I will be following closely as I have this kit on order. As explained in my other post I am in Australia

and it has not been realesed here yet. Maybe a good thing as packaging problems may be solved by the time mine arrives. Will certainly inspect before paying after what you guys have revealed.

Great build, lots of good information.  I had no damage to the hull that I could see from the kit that I just recieved.  But, I did have some damage to the photo etched pieces.  I'm curious as to wheather or not White Ensign, or Eduard will be coming out with photo etched for this kit as they have for the Revell Schnell boote kit?  Keep up the good work, and keep us posted.  I'm also interested to see how one would turn this into an R/C boat.

Hi guys,
here's an important tip for building the S-100:
the hull's under water part wasn't painted red with am black line! The original paint was "Schiffsbodenfarbe III"; a very dark grey - nearly black.
...and the Propellers - don't paint them gold or brass. They were made of steel! So do it with silver or Gunze metallizer paint.

Mr. Schatton told me, the depth charges will be ready to sell as six-packs in the mid of january, for the mines, we have to wait a little bit longer: till the end of january - they will be sold separately.

regards from Germany

Check this thread out before you all chuck the bronze paint overboard:

http://modelshipwrights.kitmaker.net/modules.php?op=modload&name=SquawkBox&file=index&req=viewtopic&topic_id=130092

On page 4 the bloke that is restoring the S-boat in the UK states quite clearly that only at the very end of the war were screws made of steel and he adds a very convincing and very bronze coloured photo of a schnellboot screw to top it off. My 2 cents [2c]

Hey guys, those of you that remember some of us got some damaged hulls, I received my replacement hulls Friday and they were perfect. Packaged and padded very securely in a large padded box, along with replacement torpedo screws and all the ladders that were damaged initially. These small parts were all cut off well back on the sprue tree to afford protection from damage and allow me to cut them off flush. So a BIG thank you to the folks at MRC for coming through with great customer service.

Greetings:

Isn't it amazing that some things we assume were of a certain color sometimes turn out to be entirely another color. Case in point, I just bought the 1/350 Akagi and from what little info I found it appeared she was painted in Sasebo grey. I thought okay so I ordered the Tamiya color for it in their spray cans and figured I was good to go. Well, turns out it's not as simple as that. I asked for help on the Steel Navy forum and Mr. Al Torres explained that evidently she did spend some time at Kure naval base before being lost at Midway. He said if he had to pick a color he would go with Kure grey as a strong possibility. Recently I've been thinking maybe I'd just go with a what if scenario where she survived until later in the war and was repainted in the Japanese camoflague pattern of light/dark green perhaps with some disruptive camoflague patterns on the flight deck as the Japanese did with some of their other carriers such as the Shinano. That way no one could say if it was right or wrong. Also the two tone green color is rather striking compared to just another shade of grey. I still haven't decided yet as I've only glued the hull together with the supports at this point. Another member suggested trying it out on a 1/700 scale version 1st to see how it turned out (I may try this). It wouldn't surprise me if someone discovers some day that the Titanic was not painted black but was actually a very dark grimey chocolate brown. I guess you just have to go with what makes the most sense sometimes such as the propellers on th S boat. I've ordered the 1/72 Revell version with the flak 38 and I'm painting mine bronze.

Sincerely

got mine sort of painted, with a satin varnish over the top. been messing now with ways to add a bit of life to it. going ok with a rust around various fiitings but looking for a way to highlight the rivots/panels. had no success, can any one point me in the right direction? pass on a few trade secrets?

my hull grey is the lightest Tamyia grey, mixed with Tamyia white. givving me a very pale grey. looks ok to me. sticking with it.

cheers

Maybe some drybrushing of the rivets with a shade or two darker than the basecoat they are in?? The pics I have seen, the paint was almost worn off of the rivets anyways.

Hi

I to am building the S100 as an R/C version and like you have now got the three engines exactly in the same place as yours quite by accident.  I was wondering what we need to do about the Rudder syatem.  As there are three rudders One main Centre and two astern of these one port and one starboard.  These two outer rudders I believe shound not turn the same as the centre one.  Do you have any suggestions or have you completed this task and if so could you please advise me.

i used the kits rudders and linked together with a plastic tiller arm, had to drill out each rudder so could fit a brass rod to fit into a brass tube, thought i had it right, till i tried it in the test tank [bath] and they did'nt work, it might have been ok for the real boat, but not for r/c, so i had rethink, and in the end i used the kit centre rudder and the outer ones, used a small graupner size rudder, which still needed cutting down and filing to shape, and this time the boat moves when in the  the bath, the good news is you don't need to drill out as they come already fitted, its a bit on a pain, but hopefully it should work on the boat lake,

Thanks Keef666

Many thanks for the information however, when you say you cut the two outer rudders to size did you mean that you made them the same size as the kits and if so is this true for the centre rudder as well. I have three Graupner rudders ready for cuting if necessary could you please advise. What about the control system of these three rudders, do the two outer ones turn less than the centre one and if so how.

Sorry to be a pain but I am relatively new to this moddelling game and can do with all the help and advice I can get.  If it makes life easy for you my email is, mastin33@gmail.com The only other model I have ever built is the Graupner Wiesel, I have load of photos if you are interested in seening any.

Regards and Best Wishes

Hi Snapdragon

My Name is Mike and if you are interested about converting the S100 to R/C then I am in the process and am willing to share my build experiences with you. I am not an expert having only built on other boat the Graupner Wiesel which was R/C and needed quite a lot of modificataions to make it true to the real boat. I have photos if you like to see some.

At present on my S100 I have installed the three propshafts and engines without much difficulty for a novice moddler like me. and have dry built some of the sub assenblies ready to be final fitted prior to painting. Of course your experiences on your build would be most helpful to me as well. My email address is. mastin33@gmail.com should you wish to talk this way or send any additional information.

the center rudder is fine, and it fits on the the center propeller, but i found the kits rudders were not going to cope, so using graupners small rudder, which was still to big it would foul  the middle rudder, so that why i cut it, but not to the same size as the kits, about 10 to 15 % bigger, so now it turns in the bath,  as i am only using a 2 channel radio, forward and reverse, the real boat can use it engines to steer at low revs, we use the rudders, i see if have any photos of the rudder lay out,  and for people making this as an r/c model as you build it, check you joins, around the front and main deck , torpedo doors and the skullcap bridge any gap when its on the water, if you can were theres space, silcone some foam etc, anything from food or electrical package, it the worse does happen. she should say afloat, and as its feezing on our lake in england this time of year, hope this helps a little

HI keef666

Many thanks for the information egarding the rudders I think that I  have got the drift, so what you are saying is that the two outer rudders whilst smaller than the center one are slightly bigger than the kits and providing they dont foul the center one all is ok.

By the way I am using a 7 channel radio/receiver system as I have bought this for my first boat the Graupner Wiesel. I even have the Gun Turrerts and Lights operating from servos. So I am looking forward to seening what is possible with the three gun systems to make them operate from servos etc.

I look forward to seening any photos you may send regarding the rudder system srtup and many thanks for the additional information regarding floation of the boat due to any mishaps etc.

Best Wishes

Nice looking boat Keith. Is that the official Schnellboot Weiss? The ace of spades emblem is great, is that a decal set or home grown? Your mines need some way to roll off the stern Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Keep the screenies coming,

Wooden balls with cocktails sticks? Great ! I also like the rubber boat you put on board instead of the horrible square monstrosities.

 <edit>

just thought i would add this photo of an early s-boat,  made it five years ago, she is 42" long and goes like the real ones.

The S100 Schnellboot has just been released in Australia. Will be inspecting the model to see if

the packaging has improved and there is no damage to the torp tubes as reported earlier by

some of the members. If all OK will rush home with it. Been following the build with great interest.

Hello all you other big boat nuts out there. This will be my first "big boat" build and I am very much looking forward to it.

But

I have a question-----does anyone else out there have a problem with the forward 2cm mount?

I mean it fits together ok and all but it does not look right.Wondering if any one has seen or can direct me to some good reference of the actual mount. Any help greatly apreciated.

Hi,

I have built my s 100, with 3 x 500 motors, 35mm 3bladed brass props, and a 14.8 volt li/po pack. The "effect" rudders steer with the main rudder, and also have the "effect" effect, if you see what I mean. I have also fitted the 20 mm quad flak 38 in place of the 37 mm flak gun. This is a tamiya kit"20mm FLAKVIERLING 38" . It is trailer mounted, so I had to make a simple deck mount, copied from the REVELL 1/72 kit. Looks great, goes well (at least scale speed). Have painted a swastica on the flag, I think this must be a P.C. ommission. It gets lots of attention at the lakeside. I would now like to make a FAIRMILE D dog boat to go with the S BOOT.

Hi Grem 56 ---- I will tell you a little secret . Most vessels ,allied and axis ,that had underwater or waterline exhausts were fitted with anti flood flapper valves .These were needed because on a rough sea the water force against the side could and would have caused untold havoc on the powerplants. The systems were very simple and always seemed to work 100% of the time ,maintenance notwithstanding. The system works on the pressure coming out the exhausts and it works flawless even when the port is way underwater! The exhaust on my biggest houseboat (before I graduated to a converted bouytender ) were 6" and on my O.S.R.V. they were 10" so yes they were composed of BIG pipes. That,s all I can add here !     tankerbuilder
