I'm only home for the weekend and then off to teach a course until mid May so the model dockyard is still in hiatus.

Nice to have the rest of you to keep me motivated though!

I'm working on the Revell 1/72 scale U-Boat. I've finished painting, now it's time to weather it so it doesn't look quite so 'new'. Great kit. Lots of fun.

Sorry folks, not a single seagoing vessel in my house (not entirely true: I do have the Disney version Nautilus)...but I think Trumpeter's gonna change all that when they release that big 1/350 Nimitz!

Just putting the finishing touches to a couple of resin ships in time for the Scottish Nationals this weekend. A Combrig Potemkin and a Samek Royal Oak, both 1/700.

I think the Potemkin is the best thing that I've done with 120 photetched mutinying sailors crowding the rails, cheering the people in Odessa. And the rigging, well, it might not be quite a matter of, "Eat your heart out, Jim Baumann", but he might just like to nibble on his left kidney a little! ;-)

I'm in the middle of building Heller's 1/400 Tirpitz. I plan on painting it in one of those splinter scemes from 1943. I've also recently finished Heller's "SMIT Rotterdam" and "La Couronne".

Nicholma,
Be sure to tell us how you like the WEM detail set for PT-109. It looks very intriguing; I've heard good things about it.

I thought I was going to get back at the corvette this long weekend but family obligations and severe relaxation scuppered that plan.

The ship will be in drydock now until the end of June due more travelling ... ah! Construction season in the Arctic!

I'm working on the CMK U-VII crew officer and two guards to go on Revells S-Boot, then Revell's PT-109, then Revell's S-Boot and finally Revell's Vosper MTB. Any body know who makes after market weapons for the PT-109 and the Vosper MTB (preferably in resin).

oh yeah, and I have an ongoing project with Tamyia's Enterprise. I'm down to doing the airwing now. I have almost all the planes I need to start that, but right now I am waiting for Trumperters aircraft to come out and see if they are any better than Tamyia's.

As to my daughter, the project there is to do all the ships in the CARL VINTON's 2003 battle group. Should keep me going awhile, especialy since I have to do each one twice! (one set for her and her husband, one set for me)

Finally completed the Model Shipways NIAGARA (only took two years) and am now scratchbuilding a Hudson River tug, the ROB. The tug was owned by the Cornell Steamboat Company of Rondout, NY in the early 1900's . I am doing it solid hull in 1/96th scale.

When I am in a boat/ship modeling mood I build mostly steamboats., paddlewheelers, sternwheelers and towboats. I'm just finnishing up a 1/35th scale sternwheeler. I'd like to build maybe a 1/24-1/25th scale towboat.

I'm carving up heller's 1/400 Z31 WW2 German destroyer. I get to use up leftover photoetch railing, got the WEM german A.A. weapons p.e. set (nice stuff) and have been using the exacto knife, saw, tubes and sandpaper. Heller gives you gun turrets that are molded closed, but they should be open mounts. It's actually less of a problem than it would seem. I've also opened up the bridge and put equpt. people and windows in it. Now for sub-assembly painting........ cheers G.L.

Just fininshed an SK radar 1:48, with theYE (?) nand the SG in progress. Waiting on the platform are two 26ft motor whaleboat. All due in two months. The latter a big challenge due to the lack of reference, and still fogged about how to go about building them beyond the keel. Ideals welcome.

Just picked up the final materials to finish the last 30% of 1/350 Enterprise (GMM PE set), air wing decals, and ship decals. Plus lots of paint for lightening up the hull colors. This time we try the Tamiya Masking Tape!

Made the classic beginner's mistake and bought a Mini Hobby Ticonderoga. I didn't know a lot about ship kit quality but I do now! That one has turned into a practice ship.

USS Churchill is being held back for winter project along with Tamiya's USS New Jersey. I did sand the hull mold marks off the New Jersey the other night. I obviously got a kit from old tooling. It took hours of wet sanding to clean the flash up.

Just finished a 1/350 Yankee Modelworks Gearing kit, reconfigured as the USS Ozbourn (DD 846). Since I wanted to replicate an early '50's version of the ship, I had to fabricate a tripod mast, update the radar array (GMM photo-etch) and change the gun directors. The biggest problem was finding detailed reference photos for placement of ladders, liferafts, etc. Also couldn't find anyone that makes 3"-50 gun mounts in that scale. Turned out pretty good. It's a gift for a friend that served on the ship. One of these days I hope to get around to submitting it to the Readers Gallery.

Afterlooking at the build lists and % of completion, I don't feel so bad having 3 or 4 kits going at once!

I'm getting the nerve up to tie into my first "real ship" kit... its a1/350 "Halifax Class Canadian Patrol Frigate" (CPF) made by Iron Shipwrights.

I started on the Helo first (only fitting seeing as how thats what I used to work on for a living)

Its more than alittle amazing how much detail you can fit on something only an inch long. I finally finished the helo after adding over 20 extra bits to its tiny airframe.

Now the hard part comes...workin with a big chunk of resinEvil [}:)] Good thing I have plenty of reference pics.

About to start a small display dealing with the Russo-Japanese War, organized around the SealsModel plastic Mikasa (beautiful) and the Combrig resin Imperator Alexander III (also beautiful in the box, but it will be my first resin ship).

Both kits came from Pacific Front. SealsModel is a very small Japanese firm, believed to be run by former Skywave employees. Combrig is a really interesting Russian company. Its resin products now cover almost all the major classes of 20th-century Russian and Soviet warships. Lately Combrig has been doing some American and British subjects; the pre-dreadnought British battleships have my eyes watering. The firm has been around quite a while and the quality of its kits understandably varies, but the most recent ones compare favorably with the very best. And the really great feature of Combrig kits is that, compared with the other resin manufacturers and even the better plastic ones, they're astonishingly cheap.

Youth, talent, hard work, and enthusiasm are no match for old age and treachery.

John,

I built teh Combrig Potemkin, it was a sweet little kit to build up. If you're into Russo-Sino War, be sure to look at a company called ModelKrak (how appropriate is that name??)

At any rate, they do alot of kits from that time period, IJN Tatsuta, Nisshin , and the Russian Peresviet are the ones that pop into my head at present.
