Revell 1/96 Cutty Sark

I started this kit Jan 1st......I'm beginning the last three yards for the mainmast..that is in nearly 3 months progress..short a week.  I'm *clipping* along......

Mizzen yards and rigging almost done

After rigging the main and lower topsail yard...I figured it might be easier to rig the mizzen yards first..then work forward...so that is where I am....rigging the mizzen yards..first(well second after the lower main yards).   Sometimes backing up is going forward....

Now onto the yards mounted...I fixed the main yard and ........now some images.

Some blocks and the sheets installed on lower for yard......I'm using chain as in the original...when at all possible.

Well..after further thinking on the subject...I opted to keep the stud yards...since they are only on the main and upper yards, plus their running rigging is exciting...so I'll use them in the stowed position.

So here is my first yard...the for- main.  I .added the flemishhorses and foot ropes along with their stirrups.  I began with the jackstay for the sail(if there were any).  Still have to add some blocks...but, looking pretty done.

Backstays nearly finished...and I tinkered on the first yard as well.  I think I will forgo any stun sails and yards..since the CS is in the yard for repair.....all of that had been removed anyway by now.

Flemishhorses and jackstays........are my next goal...I will lay out for production.

Glad to be of some service....don't abandon your model.....reinvent it.  Go the extra mile and make it more then it was originally intended.

I have built this particular model 4 times...for various people and reasons...and I never fail to glean from the previous experience.....from the knowledge and skill I have aquired..

Don't feel indifferent in posting images as you build.....it helps you and others.....and I'd appreciate to see some pics myself.

Excellent build. You're making me want to blow the dust off my abandoned CS project. Does anyone make a photoetch scroll or aftermarket piece to replace those awful decals?

And finally one from the port side, full view.  I've developed some tricks to make the standing rigging go by faster for myself...so I'm pretty excited it is nearly done.

Jumped over the rail and looked up at all that standing rigging........Formast nearly done.......then onto the yards.......Now that is gonna be a detail work out in of itself.

One thing I always try to do is be resourceful.......using whatever I can to achieve the necessary result.

Skill come bay way of practice and that by way of good practice.  Mistakes are made...but good technique is only achieved by more attempt and by good teachers.

Thanks Dave....I represent my ship builds like my telescope builds...I provide ample images and ample dialogue to encourage and inspire...along with description.  Patience is required...but vision is as important.  The Revell kit is a great starting point...and detail additions enhance.....a great kit.

Static models are great...but a *story* is needed to induce intrigue and curiosity.....along with attractive subject matter...besides the subject.

I second Dave's thoughts on Rob's build log. Rob's modeling expertise and his log have inspired me to carry on with my CS.

Although I don't have the talent and skills that so many on this site possess, I am having fun just looking at this log and thinking about the experience and enjoyment I get simply trying to carry out some of the details he's used on his model.

At least I'm now at a stage where when I break a delicate little item (stanchions on the railings for instance) I have the courage to replace the broken ones with wire. They may not look as good close up but it all adds to my model building education.

Rob's build is a LOT of fun to watch. Now, of course, he has two logs of interest to me - The CS and the Ferreira. Looking forward to new posts in both.

I ordered a couple weeks ago 42LPI chain for sheets and haulyards.  I expect to keep the detail up as high as possible on the yards and booms.  No turning back.  I hope to achieve a far greater realism and detail level then what is found on most high end wooden kits...costing many hundreds of dollars.

Wider angle.. I'll finish up the last 2 port backstays and .then onto the formast backstays.....

Well...I finished painting/weathering the deck and rail of the Ferreira...so, I'll foul her anchor and re- board the Cutty again and get back to rigging her backstays.

Sorrty I haven't been posting but I have gotten a bit side tracked with the Ferreira.......a dn its mounting in plexyglass.  I'll be back at it after I finish with mounting and base.

Thanks.....I never believed I had to use all the kit parts and am fully persuaded to be a heavely grounded modifier to said kits.  This is my 5th 1/96 CS kit and my 6th is in the mail....for use in my conversion to the Ferreira.
