Outstanding Dave.....you know..I just so happen to need an anchor and the entire formast.....the person who attempted this kit used some kind of gorilla glue and the mast is horribly deformed.......

Wonderful.....I love the yard rigging and especially the head rigging(bowsprit/jibboom)

I jumped full speed into the Ferriera...but if you can, please keep us up to date on your build...I want to see pics if at all possible.

Yes, one set of my instructions includes all the sail rigging diagrams.

I am now still stringing black thread for my jackstays. Then I'll be working on the footropes and Flemish Horses. Concurrently with the yards I'll be placing blocks on the mast tops, caps, crosstrees, and all the other places that I can see ahead to put them. Then I'll attempt the bowsprit rigging. At that point I'll take a break to build my DD-485 (USS Duncan). I should be back at the CS rigging by the end of the summer or during the fall (providing I don't die on the way up to the summit of Mt. St. Helens on July 31st Big Smile).

I'm sure looking forward to more of your build logs!!

Rigging takes organization....especially in block placement.  I look ahead and place my modified blocks on caps and trees and under the tops.  Plus I make sure I have ample blocks for around the mask feet and deck.

I have two more CS kits coming so I have my foundation for the Thermopylae..(a correct version).

The third I might convert into a Donald McKay clipper....maybe the small Bald Eagle or Stag Hound.

Do you have the instructions with the sail gear diagram?

I've been using parts from three kits that I bought on eBay. I think I have enough parts left to build ONE more CS some day. The boxes are copyrighted 1964, 1969, and 1974. There are two different sets of instructions.

I'm sure I COULD include all the running rigging but, remembering the difficult time I had including all the rigging in my 1/96 Connie, I'm not sure whether or not I will want to. Knowing me I'll probably go for it anyway Smile.

Mike...typically when a ship was going to be in port for any length of time the sheets and all the sail gear was removed.  However...not if it was in for a cargo load only.  I chose to include them because they add so much yard detail..since the sails are omitted.

I have built only two of these kits without sails...because they were the older pre 1963 kits.

Personally...I'd add them.  Which kit are you building..and do you have the detail to install them?

I am planning on rigging my CS without sails. Would skipping the sheet and clew lines be acceptable or would those lines remain up when the sails were either furled or stowed?

Thanks everyone for your wonderful support and encouragement.

Well I am finally finished(I'll probably still add some more coiled/belayed ropes).

As suggested:

It has taken me 3 months sixteen days, or roughly 390 hours of bench time to complete.

I stayed true to the 1960 version and amended when research dictated a more accurate change.

I used tester paint...both water and solvent based.  I weathered from the beginning by using black and or brown india ink and  methyl alcohol.  

I strayed from the rigging stting included in the kit......I used pre waxed, double strand cotton cord(black, 2 sizes) and thin black nylon for the shrouds and backstays.

I also used similar thin nylon(white) for the running rigging but then created my own wash( alcohol,brown/black india ink, and yellow food coloring) This created the nice old rope look..kinda yellowy grey.

I used thin strips of plastic shim stock for the railings and I completely rigged all the deadeyes and lanyards.  All chain  was from previous stock...but I did order some more from Modelshipways.

I used orthodontic wire .016 dia, for the jackstays.  I drilled each end and bent and fitted then glued .

CA was used entirely(I do have a trick most will never use...I use a small drop of dental acrylic monomer to excellerate the set up time and on porous material it sets up in an instant)

I(as seen) made my own hook blocks(I don't tie blocks off), and I painted(with flat black paint) every joint where running rigging and blocks and yards came in contact(No tie off marks to see).

Of course I scratch build the ways and all implements of rudder repair...along with all details about the hull.

When you post your final Cutty Sark shots, I suggest that you give us a summary of the build. Things like how many hours you put into it, the hard parts of the build, extra parts used, resources, what you would do differently, or whatever thoughts that you may have about the journey.

Well Dave...after I finish up with some final details on the CS..I will take some better images to post..for everyone to see.........then......

I begin on the Ferreira(Revells Cutty Sark)  which will have lots of its own detail and changes...the construction will follow identical in the hull build(I will add a new access on the aft cabin by the wheel..which was added by the Portuguese)....plus I will be rerigging it to follow after its dismasting.

As is my habbit..I will provide ample photographic documentation...and will welcome lots of feed back.

I appreciate your kind offer of contributing to my efforts..but I have already been compensated......not to mention the honor of posting to these pages and partaking in a wonderful community such as this...and mostly for talking to great people like yourself.

Rob, I can't thank you enough or adequately describe how much I've enjoyed following the progress of your CS.  I know it was a lot of work to photograph and post all the images and comments.  I'd love it if you'd continue with future models.  I wish there could be a way for each of us to pay you a little something for your troubles.  Any Ideas from other fans of Rob's?

Well I finished the last control running rigging...and I have a bit of some jib lines to lay.

It has taken me from Jan 1st till March 15th to finish this model(plus build the entire *ways* and rudder repair diorama)  3.5 months..I don't know if that is any kind of record...but I'm happy.

This finishes off the 5th 1/96 scale CS I have built to.date.

I will take some final pics of it in the next coming days and post them here for all to see.

Thanks for following by build log and I hope I have inspired others to take this super model on and make it a great keepsake.

Here is another showing it all finished.  I still have to belay all the braces internally...and you can see the different color of the unstained line and the raw line..there at the bulwork just aft of the davit.

So to recap today's work....

I finished all the mizzen control running rigging   and finished all the top 3 yards of the main.

I finished installing the brace pendants on the main yards as well.  Finished building all the blocks needed as well...so tomorrow I'll finish off the rigging for the main as well.....then I have 5 for yards left and I will be moments from finishing this kit.  Lots of coiled rope left to install too...to finish it off.

all most done folks.
