Submarine Warfare GB August 2016.
Posted by modelcrazy on Sunday, November 8, 2015 9:12 AM

I was thinking about a Submarine Warfare GB mid to late 2016 and just checking intrest. It would be open to anything sub or sub hunter related. Civil war to modern.

As I mentioned in your post over in "General", I've never done a GB but would love to try it out and I do build subs. I'll wait for your "instructions" on what to do sometime in 2016. Thanks.

It's pretty simple. You put out a feeler, kinda like I'm doing, but in other related forums as well, lay out the rules and time frame. Mid to later next year would probably be best because of the number of GB's now, which I am to blame as well, but it's up to the host. For rules you look at other GB's and copy or reject some of the rule examples.
*Most important* be attentive to your signees. Don't let them post and hear crickets for the next few days. We all get busy but don't make a habit of it. Members join to build, socialize, showoff their work and expect feedback on that work. Also, as the host you would be expected to help out finding a answer to a question, which means research...and time.
Sometimes a host will recruit a co-host to help take the load.

That's about it. Maybe we can work together. PM me if you want.

Oh boy, this sounds like fun. Maybe if I a good boy Santa will bring me a Gato, preferably 1/72 if he can fit it in his sleigh.

I think I'm going to go with 1/144 due to the size.

Have been away from my bench for a few months while doing "life stuff" after our move.

Finally getting around to setting up my basement workbench.

Plenty of subs in my stash, will pick some as time gets closer

I like it.  I have a few potential 1/700 ASW surface types in the stash.  Will pick a specific when you have a date.

Just got my 144 Gato to do as Wahoo in a dio with shell splashes and a plate with Mush's quote---Destroyer gunning - Wahoo running.  My plate should be open then.

Steve-  Look on the bay at Omni Models- my 144 Gato was around $43 shipped.

Oh man, I'm looking at a 1/144 Gato on eBay for $19.00 but my wife told me not to buy anything until after Christmas.

That will be a cool dio Goldhammer

Steve

I finally got the 1944 Trumpy Gato on sale at Squadron for $27. I read a couple of reviews that say that the kit guns need to be replaced for better details so I went ahead and ordered the resin gun set from Nautilus. Now I need to get the pe set for the railings and radar and I think that will improve the details even more.

Oh boy, I'm really excited to get this GB rolling! Come on mid 16. I need to wait to see what I get for Christmas before I order the Gato. I believe Goldhamer is building right now and he mentioned the gun.

Yep, ordered out the gun set and the White Ensign PE to toss into the box to await the build.  Going to do the 1/350 AFV 1943 as a quicky as soon as the LHS in Salem says it is here.  Will do that as OOB, SS238 and have a plate made the says  "USS Wahoo -  SS238 - On Eternal Patrol 11 October 1943"  That one will go to the Vet's Home here in town.

If the big one turns out decent , it will go there as well.

Idea for badge-A 688 doing an emergency blow and halfway out of the water at a 30 * angle?

Yeah, I don't have a badge, that may just be the trick. Would look cool, can anyone do that?

Might do a screen capture of that from Red October, or somewhere there has to be pics of those, since they are so dramatic.  But way beyond me.

Yep, in that vein.  Up to you and see what others might come up with for ideas.  Plenty of time.

Wait till you see a blue whale of humpback pull that trick.

Man that has to be a rough landing for the guys in the boat.......Rattle teeth and hocks, along with everything in between.

Looks like their may be more than a couple of 1/144 Gatos in the build, tough competition all around, gonna be fun trying to stay with the rest doing one.

***EDIT**** Sat., 19th.....Got a call yesterday that the1/350 '43 Gato is in, and in the mailbox last night was theW/E PE set for the 1/144 version.  On my way to Salem this morning to pick her up and get the paint for all three.  90 mile round trip. Glued up the hull of the 1/350 '42 as a practice build for the '43.  Also notified the gun set from Nautalis has shipped and ordered the Squadron book on Gato's, and found Ospry has a book on our subs during the war.

Looked at the 1/72 Revell version on Ebay....price not to bad IMO for a 4 1/2 footer, and some PE for her as well.Something to think about for future, but no idea of where she would go....Saw her today in the LHS in Corvallis and she is a monster, even in the box.

Opened up the '43 and about 2/3 of the freeing ports are gone from the upper hull (about the main gun mount on the forward deck on back) on this version over the '42.  Looks like I'll have to put the '43 conning tower on the '42 hull to get a more accurate rendering of my girl in her final trim.

Gun set came in on the 22nd.  Got a little flash to clean up, but they are nice.

After some waiting and serching I found and won the Trump 1/144 Gato 1941 for $19.5 off eBay. Not bad, now I need to get the gun and PE set for it.

Cool.  Got some brass tube and styrene rod called out in the White Ensign PE, and will be sendining some of it on to another builder, can send you some as well, since I can't use it all.
