The rest of the deck gun outfit came the other day, so finally all set there.  YAY!!!!   Got all the tube and rod squirreled away in the box.

Playing with a hunk of regular styrofoam 2x4 foot insulation panel from Home Depot.  Got to have something in the range of 16 x 32 to fit her on.  HL has some harder, finer grain sheet but only in 12 x 36 so might have to glue two together to get what I want.

Getting antsy wanting to start on her......Wink

I just started the 1/350. Geez its small parts are hard to work with!

Kit includes 4 torpedos but I don't see any use for them?

Looks like fun PJ. Quite a bit of resin. PE doesn't look too bad though.

The PE does pretty much all of the scope shears.  All of the little plastic stuff for the scope shears on the 1/350 is PE on the 1/144  Also calls out replacement brass tube for scopes and masts (SJ) and styrene rod for the SD mast.  Hate that the prop guards are the temp style.  I'm going to have to figure out install without the saddle mounts for mine.  Other than that PJ and I are identical for starting point.

PJ - if you need brass tube and rod for the scopes and such, let me know, I have extra that I can send, no charge.

Hokey-  Yep, tweezers are your best friend, just wait till you get to the PE........(I can hear the screams and swear words out here already....LOL)

Thanks and highly appreciate you offering the tubes. I looked at my small supply drawer and happen to have some KS 1/16th brass tubes which should be the correct diameter according to the conversion chart. Let me know if I have the correct info.

So the tubes at 1.5mm diameter = 1/16"

38mm = 1 1/2"

29mm =1 1/64"

One inch = 25.4 mm so you are pretty close on the 38 length, but I think a tic short on the 29.  The 1/16th might be just a hair big for the holes in the shears on the PE.  I'm still looking for the callout stuff, but got to get to a bigger HS to see.

They also call for 1mm brass rod for the SJ mast and 1mm styrene for the SD mast.  Looking at .039/.040 for those.

Hello everyone -

I got my chaser and I'm so ready to do this. I was alittle disappointed when I opened the box and noticed some slight damage. But no big deal and I am looking forward to this.

Come on August

Yeah, I’m getting antsy for August as well. Oh well it will give me time to afford a Pontos deck for the U-boat.

My brass plates showed up last night in the mail......will post up a teaser pic tonight.  Except for maybe a better type of foam (have just regular big bead styro right now) for the base I think I am just about set.  Oh yeah, and the wood surround for the base and having a plexi top made after.

I have to sit down and take a close look at all the extra detail parts. My hands are full most of the day babysitting my 4 month old granddaughter. The young lady demands lots of attention From grandpa.

I'm sure! Do you know why 1/350 kit includes 4 torpedos? Use as diorama items or?

Not a clue...... they are in both the '42 and '43 kits I have......only difference I can see is the upper hull and main conning tower.

Maybe a future version?

Who knows. Ok - I'm almost insane already with microscopic parts (just shot a cleat out of view!) and dealing with 1st PE for the left and right sides aft. Geez!

Goldhammer,

That is REALLY cool! May I ask how you got this engraved?

I've been wanting to create some laser engraved plates like this, but the laser engravers are a bit expensive.

I went to a local trophy shop and they made it to my specs.  It is about 3x7 inches.  That one was $15.00, and a smaller one, about 1 1/2 x 3 saying "USS WAHOO  SS238 - ON ETERNAL PATROL - 11 OCTOBER 1943" was $6.50.  Since I can't usually make it over during their hours, they dinged me $4.00 to mail them.

Not that bad in the scheme of things.

I agree! Much cheaper than the $1500 i've been seeing for a laser engraver. I'll have to check for some trophy shops in my area! Thanks!

I went to the trophy place for my USS Indianapolis plaque. Do you find the proprietor looks at you kinda funny when you tell them what you want and what you want it for?
That is the way to go though. I will be do more of that, although our trophy place has the same hours as I work and not open weekends so I have to go down during lunch, order it and go back another day during lunch and pick it up. It's a pain but looks professional.

Must be more strange people in my area-----they don't even bat an eye or raise an eyebrow when I come in and write down what I want.  Either that or she is used to me by now.  They did the plates for the battle field cross scrollsaw plaques (5 of them) I made up off a pattern.

Once I explained what it was for the guy understood and was interested in seeing of the build pictures. I need to have more plaques made. They’re not a bad price.

OK, I took all I can stands and can’t stands no more. Since I have 4 other subs to build I am going to start on my 1/144 Gato. I want to get her done for the IPMS show mid Sep in Salt Lake City and won’t have the time to complete it since the GB is starting in Aug.
So I will be starting a WIP build in the next couple of days called “The launching of USS Puffer WIP” or something like that.
This will be an unusual build using this photo of the Puffer being launched at the
Manitowoc Shipbuilding Co. Wisconsin November 1942 (Burr, cold) and should be interesting to complete.

So keep an eye out.

Now that you have blown the 1/144, you are going to have to go 1/72 for the GB.........ya, right......a water dio on that 4'-4" monster would take 4 men and 6 boys to move, and a full sheet of plexi to make a cover for.

Does cut the field down on the 144 Gatos though.  Will be watching the build closely to pick up any issues with her.

Yeah, it will be a big one alright. It’s going to take a lot of cotton and acrylic gel for sure. I'll be lucky to pull it off but if I do, what a sight. It'll win a prize for sure. The base will be made out of foam so it shouldn't be too heavy. Where I put it is another question. Maybe I'll send her to the Lexington Museum to be next to my Indy and Musashi. I'll bet they don't have anything like that.

As far as a 1/72 Gato, yikes! I will be building the 1/72 Type IX U-boat though, right out of the gate. That will also leave the 1/350 Akula, Ohio and LA.

I really need to get going on the Gato if I want to show her at the contest. The water and base alone will take a couple of months to complete. I also need to get some signal pennants.

Oh boy do I have a surprise for you guys. Cody J has completed the badges for the build, and as usual there will be a few to choose from.
I will be writing an official GB post with rules and possible co-host on July 1st to get ready for Aug 1st.
Here they are, enjoy.

The text on #1 may change.

I will be doing the Trumpy 1/144 Gato as I posted before but modeler's minds wonder when looking at the stash...................ConfusedHmm

I also have the Revell 1/72  type IXC and was contemplating the thought of not doing the 505 but possibly another boat having  the 105mm deck gun and some really cool looking como paint scheme like some of the type VIIs I have seen in pictures but unfortunatelly I haven't located any good paint and armament reference for the type IXC's.

There is more AM for the type VII than type IX it seems.

Steve

Yea there are tons pe and resin for the type VII and just a few for the type IX. CMK has the 105mm gun in resin and would love to put it on my IX but I need to find a good reference source. Most of the reference out there is about the type VII.

If anyone has any references on the IX please give me a shout.
