Yes, those are the plans for the Santiago Galleon. They were originally comercialized by Vincenzo Lusci in the 1960s but the author I think was a Mr. Gay. They are re-released in kit form.

The interesting point in Dusek ship is the hull.

XVIth century Spanish galleons have almost no decoration at all. And only a tiny bit inXVIIth century, much less than other countries. They were becoming more and more black with each tarring. I do not know from where that use of hanging shields in Spanish galleons comes. It is something you see in other countries but it is unusual for Spain.

Seville river,

The best pictures for late XVIth century early XVIIth galleons come from Hendrick Vroom. He travelled through the Meditaerranean and in the 1580s he was shipwrecked near Lisbon. Until he was able to return to the Netherlands he earned his life there painting the ships he was seing in Lisbon. So he became familiar with the ships from many countries to the last detail.

The one you show here, from Cornelis van Wieringen was made in 1625 about the 1588 armada, it could have a mixture of details from both periods.

The last ship seems based on Lusci/Gay Santiago de Compostela plans?

Thank you, this thread is a treasure of practical information and meaning pictures. I have both the Vincenzo Lusci original 1962 plans and the Imai kit, but probably I will never start the thing.

Another kit on some of Lusci's plans, the 1540 Santiago de Compostela galleon, is going to be released this year by a Spanish maker, Disarmodel. But it will be outdated from the start.

I consider the most up to date Spanish Galleon (early 1600s) kit today is the San Martin by Dusek. It is based on the 2012 book by Hormaechea, Rivera and Derqui

https://www.academia.edu/19453876/Los_galeones_espa%C3%B1oles_del_siglo_XVII_-_Tomo_I

https://www.academia.edu/19454708/Los_galeones_espa%C3%B1oles_del_siglo_XVII_-_Tomo_II

They were modelists before becoming historians, so they have a special sensitivity towards building. The only problem I see (not having started yet the kit) is that the 1588 San Martin was a Portuguese man o war, made probably in India, and not a 1600s Spanish Galleon. Occre San Martin, I think from Rubio Serrano 1991 plans, is aimed in that direction.

By the way, the links in the cloud from a couple of years ago do not seem to work anymore.

Cheers!

Krill,

Your pictures say a 1000 words and make it very easy to understand your techniques, which by the way will really help for my next rigging project.

Woderful work.

Good day Bill,

Yes, I know Radek , and purchased a few raritet models from his stock and cnc wood block as well, various sizes ,as test , never did it before ,and just wanted to know , what is it , cnc block ? :)))

and I bouth it.

What I wanted to say - I liked very much his shop service and way of  communication with him as well , all models received in exelent condition and with all parcell relevant information.

about cnc blocks from his shop, pls note, I think, Radek don''t make it by him self... just found supplier... I expect -  from China - they are very accurate in production and shape ,but the only one disadvantage- made from very soft wood...damn itBig Smile... and unfortunately  I was , me personal,I was not able to manage rigging small blocks of 2.0 mm ... tried to hold and rigg them...but every my attempts - just damage blocks when I tried to hold them with tweezers, I damaged them...due to very soft wood...

it was the only one personal, let's say, "negative" remark about 2 mm block only...:)))

than, later on, I found one of the russian small company

http://lavka-korabela.ru/categories/bloki,

who was able to provide me with same block size, same quality made, but from hard wood... I don't know where they find original maker,do it themself, or fpund some maker in China , as well ,as Radek found his supplier, may be... but the only difference in wood origin, but it makes big difference when You rigg blocks as modeller... at least for me personal, it was much easy to rigg this blocks without damage them...due to hard wood material...

please consider all said above as personal opinoin only! :))) looks like due to my ..." hands"

about rigging 2 mm cnc block from Radek shop

:)))

I saw other moddelers made exelent examples with those blocks...

Kirill,

Have you looked online at HisModel in Czechoslovakia?  He runs an eBay store as well as a website from which you can make purchases.  He focuses on sailing ships of all eras. His blocks and sails are superb.

Good day Steve,

This question, rigging plastic model with correct blocks, sometimes became very important ! :)

In this , Lee galleon kit, blocks were included, but due to absolute wrong size and shape ,I didn't use them...and tried to find another solution ...

That time, I didn't know abt specialized model shops , with available correct blocks...and decided to make them by myself ...finaly I made half " set" of ness-ry quantaty and shapes, and another half were fabricated/ resin casted by one of my friend... but I could say -selfmaking all ness- ry blocks for complete rigging 3-4 masts sailing vessel model ...  this is not easiest way  :)))

for Catalan Ship model, there is one mast and one sail, there are not too much blocks , and almost all of them have same shape and size...make them from styrene maybe not so bad idea! :)))

When need to rigg 3-4 masts square rigg ship, with huge q-ty of blocks,

may be the easy way , to fabricate set of master model blocks first, and then just reproduce/ to cast them from resin as much as ness-ry...

Or purchase them in one of specialized shop, if all ness-ry sizes and shapes available...sometimes small blocks , like 2mm ,of good quality, difficult to find...

Krill,

Thank you for the information on how you make blocks, it was very informative. Your rigging work is just amazing, so thanks for sharing.

I have not tried resin casting yet but I was thinking of carving blocks for my Catalan Ship from styrene. Not sure how I am going to get consistent sized blocks though. One more thing to think about.

Good day keavdog, Nino,

Thanks for your comments ! :)

I think / could expect...this Lee kit will take oil washes... I didn't see original Imai plastic kit of this galleon, but this , Lee kit, is in very good quality /wood grain presented, as You can see on above posted  pictures...

and my washes works well...I didn' t use oil washes , has no experience with them, but for "stain "( mix of abt 100 ml) I use artists dry pastels powder mixed with water ,1 drop of dish washing detergent and tea spoon of alcohol...

apply/ let it dry/ remove excess by cotton stick...and if results found good - fix it by acrylic matt warnish

in this , Lee kit , plastic is very good /I  like it- it is hard ,and I left it as it is ,for masts and spars without replacement for the  wood, except bowsprit - it was replaced for the wood due to too much load of fore mast standing rigging on it from one side only...

I saw in internet shop that russian repack of Imai galleon, which You mentioned...but I don't know what is the quality of the kit

Wish You All the Best!

Steve, Tanker-Builder ,

Thank you very much for your attention and comments !

This Thread is the Best Entertainment ever. And bringing up your full resolution pictures is just the Wow Factor a newbie modeler (me) needs. Thank You Kirill.

As Tanker Builder said, Does the Lee Spanish Galleon plastic take Oil washes similar to the original IMAI plastic?  I know from other Threads (DavidK, et al…)  the IMAI kits are valued for their quality of mold and material…and they do take “stain” well.

There are two "re-issues/copies" of this kit;  The Lee version and a Modelist version from Russia.  It has been suggested that both Lee and Modelist made pantograph copies of kits in the past. Do you think Lee used the actual IMAI mold for this model?  Your ship sure looks very detailed as far as wood grain and small parts which implies it is from the real mold.

Boy ;

It's hard to believe that years ago I used to do that for clients . After my Chest Crush /Upper Left accident I stopped doing that . It took two years to train my left hand and then I couldn't get the hand to behave  , on small stuff . Besides at my present age I go crosseyed . Very well done .

I wonder though . Is that kit made of the same plastic . Mine took all kinds of regular stains well , just like Wood !

Good day,

Dear friends,

have some small progress in building - mizzen and bonaventur mast stage...

* prepaired rings and rings bolts ,simplest way - made it from soft metal wire, drill 1 mm for th rings calibration , and sweing needle for ring bolt calibration...

and blocks for latin sails lifts - made them from resin casting and partly , from plastic telephn.cards

*than prepaired and installed bonaventur mast's shrouds

and finaly - bonaventur mast stay - first loaded it a little bit, than made loop with splicing imitation and finished/stained a little ...

Wish all of you all the best ... :)

Good day Steve ,

Thanks for your comments,

blocks and deadeyes- yes , half of them I made by myself , from two components steel putty, next half - I asked one of my friend to cast it from resin... presently almost run out of small 2 mm size...

But this metod of making blocks - I didn't like -too complicated to make them looks good and huge time consuming... I think it is much easy to purchase fabric wooden block- more accurte than my "hand made" :)))

I'm afraid bonaventur mast riging I will make with wooden blocks , recently found some shop who made small size wooden blocks , started from 2 mm... they make them from hard wood and very accurate in shape! ...very handy for manipulation!

...I tried blocks from other shop , they are nice and accurate, looks great ...but wood is very soft...and when I try to strope them(small ones), easily damage them but didn't succed to rig them :(

There is small progress with mizzen mast rigging...

arranged additional lead block for MTglnt halliards

fitted topmast shrouds

completed/painted and stained main topgallant halliards crowsfeet /which were secured to mizzen stay

made and installed mizzen topmst stay - this was made just "based on" Anderson's book and old arts /picturs , but this my version of topmast stay mizzen rigging has no specific prototype...

inital my idea was to make it the same as on Elizabet Jonas galleon model (stay completely devided in two separte legs)...but later on I changed my mind due to most of the ancient pictures demonstrated differnt stay arrangement - it started as single rope and later on, somewhere in the middle devided in two legs and than secured to the aft shrouds by means of crowsfeet...

Good day Steve,

Thanks ! :)))

for support and words...

Would like tobshare with you ...there is kind of mental kick, I 've got recently... I mean this artist watercolor pictures - some kind og kindom of presision details ...hard to believe how man can do this!!!Didn't see his works before and now

Loved his style of painting a lot :)))

I found his works when Couple of days ago I visited one of modern art exibition in museum ERARTA , here, in St.Peterburg...

there were more artists and "art objects" represented , most of them looks like metal scrab/garbage, by my opinion... :)))

but this artist, was like pearl between them

Kirill4,

That you are a little tired of the rigging is very understandable. You must know, however, that your WIP is a revelation to many on this site as to what can be acomplished with skill, intelligence, stamina and perserverance. This has to be one of the finest models nearing completion that I'll ever have the privelege of witnessing.

If you feel a lack of motivation just remember that you are helping many modelers by showing how you have built this ship to this point. Take as many breaks from the tasks as you need to rejuvinate your original impetus to create as accurate and beautiful a ship model as you can ... you certainly are!!

In case I forget, Happy Birthday on the 21st of this month!!

Well said Mike ! I also want to wish you an early Happy Birthday and many more years of amazing building...   Dale
