I want to build a diorama of the Arizona Memorial. I will use online images and information to build a reasonable model of the hallowed subject.
I found an image of a bronze replica of the memorial and of the Arizona herself. I'll use these as a guide.
The catastrophic explosion the doomed her, lifted the armored deck from the hull and when it came down, a lot of the bow section underneath was gone. This explains the iconic picture of the superstructure bent forward.
From the drawing, the port hull forward of the superstructure is bowed outward. The bow armored deck is sunken down into the hull and the keel must of fractured due to the portion of the bow that does not line up with the stern deck.
I started by assembling the basic model. All that is needed is the port and starboard hulls, the main decks, the second deck, two turrets and one set of guns.
I traced the outline of the inverted hull onto cardboard and had a local copy shop match the drawing to the size.
your shipmate,
Ziggy
this looks interesting and lots of research .
Nick.
Hi;
I will be watching with interest.you could go to 1/700 and include the Missouri as well, I think .This will be interesting .. T.B.
Lookinf great! Interesting idea.

Ziggy, cut all the railings off the main & upper decks when the decks are in place so not to cause a step between decks & hull. using that same model to build 17 OBBs from the Wyoming class to the Colorado class. http://www.shipmodels.info/mws_forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=165105
ddp59using that same model to build 17 OBBs from the Wyoming class to the Colorado class.
If need some of the spare parts I won't be using, let me know.
Also, ddp59, I want to build the USS Idaho BB-42, maybe you could help me with that conversion?
i replied to your post in my OBB thread but will ask here too, what scale & what time period? still check my reply in my thread as i left a link there for some Idaho plans.
If you get Smithsonian, Nat Geo, or American history channels, look for an episode of drain the ocean, they did one on Pearl. Part of it was on our Lady.
You know there must've been a full load of fuel in the remaining tanks.I thought they drained some. But she still weeps.
The bronze image is about the right size, however this is what I want to model only much smaller.

Thanks David, I had not seen the moorings before, so that is cool and I will order them. I tried to start a thread at shipmodels.info but I get a message to wait for them to be approved.
thread was approved as i posted to it. did you get my email?
Sigep Ziggy Thanks David, I had not seen the moorings before, so that is cool and I will order them. I tried to start a thread at shipmodels.info but I get a message to wait for them to be approved.
Sig...he shows a set of the 1941 moorings are available.
I'm looking forward to the build.
I removed the molded on railings from hull halves and based on the drawings, marked the part of the hull that needs to be removed to replicate the damage from the magazine explosion.
Caught my eye happy to follow along with this Wip and subject matter.
Thanks for showing intrest, I too was established in 1961 and have ties to county Cork.
me, county clare.
I cut out one of the enlarged photos and matched some parts to them. You can see how much I have bow the port and starboard bow sections.
do you have access to a heat gun or even a hand held hair dryer?
Ziggy, see if you can get ahold of Stillwell's book about BB-39.
Mine unfortunately is in some box (I hope) out in the barn.
There's a chapter about the salvage operation which went on for several years.
It includes your drawings and quite a few others plus a lot of photographs.
Modeling is an excuse to buy books.
Zig;
Hey ? Why don't you use a heat gun on those damaged areas .I believe it would look better .
I'll be following.
This is something I've been wanting to do for years but just didn't have the skillset at the time, now I just don't have the time.
My dream is now to replcate her shortly after the attack prior to the masts and weckage removal.

Building a kit from your stash is like cutting a head off a Hydra, two more take it's place.

Thanks for all the great advice and interest in my build. I have a plan, hope it works!
David, I printed the Polish/English copy on the Idaho. I can't thank you enough. Totally awesome!
Mr Morrison, I would love to get a copy of the book you mentioned, the copies I found on-line are not very clear and the photos of the model in Pearl are mostly vacationer photos. I can use my imagination and see how she turns out.
I have put together a temporary mock up and will fine tune it later.
Thank you Model Monkey! I got the moorings yesterday and saw your note, thanks again. I ordered the memorial from Shapeways, however, have not received it yet.
Now much of an update, had to work this weekend (my turn), so just a photo.
Working on the Arizona Memorial. I have a photo I will be using as the size of the diorama, working on no 2 turret, mud lines on the hull and now have both the moorings and memorial.
Best wishes!

I ordered some 1/400 scale people from an architectual company, so I will have people on the memorial.
I have started on the destruction on the Arizona, I cut the hull sides and added styrene to hold the new forward deck and started modifying the rear deck.
