@cadcyg: The short answer is no, you can't. The dullcoat will fog your windows. Best approach is to dullcoat the tape before you apply it. By the way, I like what you did with the cockpit!

I do my canopies the other way...mask with Tamiya tape and cut out the frames...you can do just about anything over the canopies as long as you leave the masks on... Have you tried "Fast Frames"...just like what you`re doing but pre-cut. I used them a few times but don`t really care for them . Good luck with whatever you decide to do!

Fellow modelers.

I am trying out something I have not done before.  I airbrushed some automotive stripping tape and used it for the panel lines on my canopy.  What I would like to know, could I use this dull coat spray to coat the canopy and the stripping tape giving me that dull look I am trying to achieve for the Black widow?  I don't want it to eat the tape or fog up the canopy.  I want it to seal in the tape.

Thanks Len.  Those are the French markings that're included in the Eduard P-39Q Profipack.  This kit had some parts added to it, i.e. props, spinner, and tires from the Eduard kit, gun pods from an Arii P-47 that were actually bomb racks, and guns from an unknown kit..

Well my 7 year old son and I started building some Revell/Monogram models.  I am a history teacher and my son started to take an intrest in what I do for a job.  he knows Great Grand pa was in WWII and Grandpa was in vietnam.  So we are picking out planes he likes and I wanted to post what we have finished so far.

P-40 WarHawk. My son picked out the colors and I used an airbrush for the frist time.  it did not turn out to bad but I have a ton of work to do.  He wants to build a B-25 gun nose..just right into the fire :o)

We also just started a Bf-109g-10 today

 

The work in these 29 pages are amazing!!!

    Good work yourselves, NavyChris and son.  You gents (and ladies - OWL, I know you're there) with kids interested in what you're interested in are fortunate men (and women ...).  Live it to the limit, and then some.

I am not sure if you are masking your canopies Ordie or free handing them. If you are doing the former, what I have found that works for me is to cut thins strips of tape and follow the frame in one direction, where these cross another frame I take a blunted toothpick and really burnish the tape down good so I have a good "crease" to trace with my knife to cut the tape. When I start painting I almost drybrush the first layer or so on, as that will seal things up and keep the paint from creeping under the tape. If you are doing free hand I have found for me that drybrushing the frames works better than trying to actually paint them.

I am glad to hear such nice praise for the At-6/SNJ kit, I have that in my stash but have several in the que ahead of it.

Thanks for the tip .  I will follow your advice on my RM SBD, now on the bench.  I airbrushed it, and did use small strips of tape.  What I didn't do was run them in one direction only, burnish as well as I should have, or use a knife to cut along the edge going on or coming off.

Thanks, since I'm not the "artist" style builder (e.g., using artist oils/pastels)..... yet, I use a base coat of MM enamel, I find using an acrylic "wash" mixture of water, black & gray paint and touch of dish soap (all mixed up in small glass container to reuse as needed), over a gloss coat (some like Future, I use MM Gloss from rattle can), let it seep into recessed lines, dry, then carefully remove with damp paper towel.  Not perfect but a fairly easy process and works pretty well with any recessed panel line kit (like your 109).  Good luck and keep it up!

Congrats on getting your youngster interested in history, I'm sure you'll teach him on what REALLY happened.  The R/M kits are great value for the most part and your P-40 looks great.  Might want to get a couple more under the belt before the multi-engined craft, congrats and good luck.  That 109 kit is a fun little kit, not sure you saw my build of that kit on the previous page:

Ordie, I love your AT-6...nicely done!

Good looking build Ordie!  Yellow can be a tough color to work with...for me anyways. That kit was a pleasant surprise when I built mine last year...lots of interior detail and the fit wasn`t too bad either. I believe I did mine in the same scheme as yours...not too many yellow birds built around here! Keep up the excellent work!

Ordie, that's a nice build. I saw one at an airshow last year that was all yellow with 'Memphis" markings. I don't know if was accurate, but anything with "Memphis" or "Olathe" has my attention. Thanks for sharing.

As stated many times before, I'm no fan of yellow winged pre-WWII planes BUT....... ALL yellow is a different matter.  That looks great Ordie!

Just to prove I meant what I said when I told Big Dog his son was probably a better modeller than I, I contribute my latest (fourth build, third plane, current era).  This was my first cockpit and my first control surface cut ever, (elevators).  There is so much wrong with it - but I can't help but overdo it, I want to try everything I can, every build, which is going to continue to get me lots of goofs for a while.  The worst is the canopy (and I dispair of ever getting a good one), which I did twice, completely stripping off the first paint job and doing it again.  As hard as it probably is to believe, this second pass at the canopy is actually way better than the first.  Also, I got the cockpit in the fuselage all caddy-wumpus.  There are a lot more errors, like seams I should have filled, etc.  Constructive criticism is always welcome

On the plus side, I cut seat belts out of decal backing (also a first), and that turned out OK.  As far as the elevators go, I discovered cutting them off is a lot easier than putting them back on in a convincing manner.

I will put in a good word for the 1/48 RM AT-6/SNJ kit.  This kit is a great value, IMHO.  You get parts for three different planes (former incarnations of the kit, I gather from talk on the 'net), dropped flaps, two canopies (except for the windshield), diamond tread tires and a fairly well detailed cockpit.  Not bad for under twelve bucks (I paid like $11.21 or so online).  About halfway through the build - realizing how poorly I was doing on this one - I bought another one for my stash, and when my skills improve, I'll probably build it as a 1942 gun trainer.

Thanks for the kind words. I think it really helps that he is already interested in history and aviation. The only drawback so far is that he is more interested in early aviation as opposed to WWII stuff and those models are a bit difficult to build. Since he already has the history interest I am hoping he can learn about patience, planning and problem solving from modeling. Plus I figure the industry needs all the new blood it can get.
