The F-18 is a monogram anyway, all the F-18's that RoG made are from Monogram molds (as far as I'm aware).

only thing though, unless it's like glued to that spot, that Tomcat has a pretty dangerous place, no?

the Mig is the old Revell kit from the late 70's. They still have it on the shelves today but with different markings. It is a good kit for what it is. I built it OOB and I understand that there are aftermarket parts to make it better.

I like it though it was easy to get together.

Revell 1/48 F6F-5, two views. This was one of the first three kits  I bought after returning to the hobby after a long spell.  I went for the name I knew.

I'm currently working on a Revell AT-6/SNJ 9as an SNJ).

Bomber Boy, My father flew with your wife's grandfather! I was looking for a picture of the AMBII from the ground with full crew. I have a picture of her in formation en route to Bordeaux on her last flight. There is writing on the back of the photo, briefly describing her final mission. The author may have signed it, but I am still trying to decipher it. When I saw the crew photo of Good Pickin', I was taken back to my childhood - flipping through all of Dad's war pictures. My dad is in the front row, second from right. Somewhere in my family's possession is the last photo of AMBII from a distance just before she blew. It was the only picture from his time in the service that dad had in a frame. He had reunited with and kept in contact with several of his crew buddies through the 452nd Bomb Group Assn. If I recall, my father was one of the last two surviving crew members when he passed back in 2000. If you can find any other pictures of the AMB crew and are willing to share, I would be grateful. If your wife's grandfather was the OE Wright, I may have a picture to pass along to you as well. I am still trying to get the rest of the pics and books from my mother. Please contact me at your convenience.

JATO takeoffs are indeed impressive things. Saw one at an air show in Dallas as a kid and it's probably one of the top five coolest aviation things I've witnessed.

Rounding out that list would probably be:

1 - Harrier demonstration. Just because it's so unnatural and weird to see something hover like that. Moreso in person.

Seen that too. Simply amazing.. and freakin' loud too!

3- Low flyover by a Corsair. Grew up in Dallas and every 4th of July we'd drive 5 minutes to Addison Airport for fireworks. The Cavanaugh Flight Museum's there, and they'd always bring out their flyable aircraft to keep people entertained until it got dark enough for fireworks. One of their aircraft was an F4U Corsair. Hearing that thing dive and then rip across the runway with the Pratt & Whitney R-2800 screaming was what jarred me out of gray jets and got me into WWII aviation.

That rocks! Seen this in Chino several times and yeah, what a thriller!

4 - Last year, out in the backyard with the boy, hear engines. Nolan says "daddy airplane!" (he'll notice anything in the sky...it's amazing). We look around, don't see anything. But the engines don't sound like a jetliner or the Cessna-type planes that usually fly over. Much deeper. Then a friggin' B-29 plows overhead at what looked like a ridiculously low altitude. I'd guess maybe 1500, 2000 feet. We ran out front and watch it, my son laughing maniacally, while my wife rolled her eyes. Found out later that Fifi was paying a call at ABIA that day, so we must've seen her circling into approach. Cool to see a B-29 fly, and cooler still for the unexpected randomness of it...

That ROCKS! Never seen a B-29 fly, but that has got to be one of the best things to ever happen!

Germany, 1984... and lets just say that 1000' AGL was well above this guy...

Nothing quite like a low-pass!

This one was snapped with my wife's cheapie camera, and no time to zoom in, at a concert this past summer. (I wish I'd taken the good camera ) A pair of CF-18s in full-on afterburner - what do you think - 1000 feet or so??? They may have put out more noise than U2 did that day...

Yeah, I've seen a USAF one do that in 700 feet of runway. The difference: no RATO's! he did it all on his own power. That was a sight to see!

They can... but it is no where near as fast/steep/or impressive as a JATO T.O.  C-17's can do a heck of an assault T.O. as well when needed.

Since there is no masonry forum on FSM you can put it here. After all, the F-4 is proof that if you put big enough engines on a brick, it will fly.

 

One afternoon about 20 years ago I was doing a post construction check of a parking garage we designed at Portland International. It was backed up right against the fence, across the way is the OAFNG ramp.

They were taking off in staggered fours.

Oh the Sturm und Drang. The Donner and Blitzen. Those engines really do put out those little orange rings in order, they are really loud too. I just about went to aircraft heaven on the spot.

I got to see both the Thunderbirds and Blues when they were flying Phantoms.  It was literally a viseral experience when they made a low pass in the six-ship delta formation with those twelve J79's roaring.

Heck a tank is fine here, as long as we can post an A-10 in the armor section.

I helped my nephew build a Revell/Monogram M-48 last spring.  I was kind of impressed.  It isn't the greatest kit, but with a little effort, you can make it look good.  I got myself the Sherman.  After 43 years of model building, I don't remember a single Sherman.  Again, not the greatest kit, but I enjoyed it and it didn't come out too bad.

So, whadda ya think?

Very nice collection of the kit figures!  This is one of the reasons I like building the old Monogram kits as much now as I did back in the late 70s, they really came out with some great figures with the kits.  I really regret having left modeling behind for about 18 years in 1982, because Monogram developed a couple more really excellent figures (eg, the Visible B-17 crew, and the crew in the ProModeler Catalina kit).  Sure, there are aftermarket makers today who make very nice 1/48 figures, too (like CMK, Tamiya, Eduard), but my favorites are still the USN aviator in the Devastator kit, and the USAAF bomber pilots in the B-17 and B-24.
