May God be with you Tosh. That looks like a carbon copy of the 1/48th scale Corsair I did almost two years ago. I had one helluva time with that one but pulled it off fairly well I suppose. I am looking forward to your progress with this one as you've got a nice selection of "goodies" to go along with this. If this thing is even remotely the same as its 1/48th counterpart be careful of the overall fit and those inner wing halves. Those things gave me a lot of static.

Looks like a pretty cool kit Toshi! I can't wait to see you tackle that Verlinden cockpit. I'm a little too young to remember watching Baa Baa Black Sheep but I do hear my dad talk about it every once in a while Stick out tongue

Yes, it's very nostalgic to just see the box art.  It brings back fond memories of my youth.  Now you've done it, you make me feel really old when you said that you were too young to remember The Blacksheep Squadron show. LOL!  LOL!  Thank you sir for following my build.

Greg

Ok, this is going to be fun!

Where did you get the kit, Toshi? The instruction sheet looks a bit aged. Is this kit available as "new" from Revell?

Looking forward to following along on your first resin job. That looks like a fairly daunting resin cockpit. You'll do great, you always do.

Yes, I've been amped up waiting to get this kit started.  I'm so excited about the build of this kit.  I purchased this kit via eBay.  There's possibly half a dozen or so Baa Baa Blacksheep Corsair kits available.  They tend to trend at or around the $30.00 price point.

I won mines via a bid.  My final offer was approximately $20.00.  There are also two to three Revell 1:32 Baa Baa Blacksheep Zero kits available as well.  The Zero kits tend to trend around the $30.00 price point as well.

As for the instruction sheet, it's tattered and stained with age.  It's still readable so that's a good thing but it definately shows it's age.  Currently, due to the cancelation of Baa Baa Blacksheep some thirty odd years ago, this kit is not in circulation and Revell has stopped producing this kit as well as the Zero kit.

The Verlinden Resin kit is a whole kit in itself.  LOL!  It will definately challenge me during assembly as I've never touched a resin kit of any kind before.  Thank you sir for following and replying on my thread.  You honor me sir!

I, too watched Baa Baa Black Sheepback in the 70s. I even got the DVD series. However, there is a grey area when it comes to Pappy's personal aircraft. There are two variations - one being "Lulu Belle" and the other (I believe is the real one) - "Lucybelle".

However, he also flew one with no markings of Lucybelle or Lulu Belle. That aircraft was to prevent the Japs targeting Pappy exclusively.

Thank you mustang1989, I pray everyday in thanks.  You are correct in your statement in regards to the folding wing halves.  They are a huge challenge at best.

As a youth, I built three Baa Baa Blacksheep Corsairs and I broke all three Corsair wings as well.  I'm hoping that this will not occur on this fourth build!  Wish me luck and thank you for the read and reply!

My understanding of the Corsairs, Boyingtons in particular is that no particular aircraft was assigned to a particular pilot. They simply jumped in what ever was available that was ready to go and that is what they flew on that mission. Most of the photos of Boyington were said to have been staged for the war effort by photographers and that the planes he is photographed in and around are not necessarily linked directly to Boyington beyond those photos. I also understand that most of the models depicting him in "his" plane are strickly based on those photos, and that is where the idea of his plane ususally falls short of reality. But, what else do we have to go by? IF the photo is the best we can do to honor him, then that's what we will do. Build on Toshi, the Corsair is the coolest plane ever made. IMO

Thank you Gamera!  Being this is the first time I've ever worked with a resin set, I'm shocked by how much cutting/sawing/sanding needs to be done in order to get the resin pieces prepped for attachment.  I don't think I've ever used this much CA in my life.  LOL!

To BrandonK,

Thank you so much for reiterating the information in regards to Lulubelle/Lucybelle.  I completely agree in that to honor "Pappy" it's as simple as apple pie, just build either or Lulubelle/Lucybele.  Or even both.  That's what makes modeling so interesting, no matter what, where, how, and or why that happens, it's all up to the builder.

The builder purchased the kit, the building supplies, and of course his or her time invested.  You can even paint your kit pink with Hello Kitty on it.  There's nothing wrong with that as long as you're enjoying yourself and having fun.  The latter is something that this forum of members has taught me and I apply this fact to my life now!  Thank you sir for the read and reply as well as confirming the information you provided.

With no doctors appointment nor therapy sessions today I get to work on my Corsair build today.  At approximately 4:00pm, I will be reviving via USPS, my Avro Lancaster decals as well as my next build.

Im really anxious and excited to receive my Lancaster decals as this sheet contains the roundels.  I'll also be receiving a second package which holds my next build.  A GWH P-61 Blackwidow.  It comes with a Big Ed set, canopy mask, extra decals, and a cowling and propeller AM items.  I got this at a steel.  If I were to purchase the GWH Blackwidow as well as everything that's AM, I would be spending somewhere or at $215.00.

Instead, I purchased this kit as well as all the AM pieces for half the price via eBay.  That to me is getting away with murder!  My tracking information via USPS designates a delivery today of both items!  I'll definately do a WIP thread in regards to the Blackwidow.

...If this thing is even remotely the same as its 1/48th counterpart be careful of the overall fit and those inner wing halves. Those things gave me a lot of static.

This kit's not related to any other; it was an original tooling in Revell's pre-merger 1/32 catalog.  Monogram did the F4U that is currently available today in the Revell-Monogram catalog; that one, too, was an original tooling, from Monogram's pre-merger 1/48 catalog.  I never understood why they kitted the version they did, though, given that we all grew up reading stories of Boyington, and Ira Kepford (when Revell issued this kit, Kepford's Corsair was the one they depicted, if I am not mistaken) and other Corsair aces and units.  And I never understood why they chose to mold the canopy frames to the fuselage.  Still, it was fun to build it, slap the decals on, and take it out in the backyard to chase Zeroes.

I've seen this old kit done up with some additional care, and aftermarket products.  A buddy of mine did one a couple of years ago and brought it to our club meeting, and I didn't recognize it as the old Revell kit.  I thought it was from a newer maker, like Trumpeter.

You're on a great path, Toshi, I love how your cockpit is shaping up!

Thank you theBaron.  I didn't know that that was the case in regards to the Revell 1:32 Corsair, "Pappy" Boyington series.  I just need to take extra care in assembling the folding wings and the landing gear as those two areas is where I failed three times as a child.  Hopefully, some forty years latter, I'll be able to correct my issues.

The cockpit looks outstanding Toshi. Excellent work coming out of your shop for sure.

Yeah, Resin is great for detail but, it does increase the work load. It's worth it though. Please tell me that you are wearing a mask of some kind as cutting and sanding resin puts up a lot of dust particles that are quite unhealthy for you. Just looking out for you my friend.

Monsieur Rix beat me to the punch by one post. I too was concerned about your lungs working with resin. Glad you did your research and are protecting yourself.

Good grief, that cockpit looks like you're and old resin pro.

Cool you got to see Pappy.

I actually got the information regarding a mask when working with resin from FSM forum members.  Thank you for the read and reply sir.  Yes, after seeing "Pappy" for the first time, he became my idol!

I am actually building one of these at the moment as well. I grew up in the late sixties and early seventies and built all of the Revell 1/32 scale aircradt as quickly as Revell released them. I loved the original artwork by Jack Leynnwood. I started to buy old kits with the original boxes on ebay and figured I would build them to look like the boxart and display them together - a trip down nostalgia lane. Here's a shot of the Corsair without decals and paint chipping. I enjoy seeing oldies built well - thanks Toshi!

I saw Pappy Boyington in person at the Oshkosh, WI fly-in event back about 1977.  He was autographing and selling copies of his book.  I am still kicking myself about not buying one, but it was beyond my budget back then.  And no, he didn't look at all like the guy who portrayed him in the TV show!

There was a flying Corsair exhibited there, along with a P-38 and many others.  They did an air show including a mock dog fight and bombing run- what a thrill that was!
