Completed 12/4/16 Sunday WIP Minicraft 1/144 USAAF B-17G
Posted by Toshi on Tuesday, November 29, 2016 2:56 AM

To my fellow forum members,

Just for a little driving practice, I wanted to see if I could go the distance and drive from Streetsboro, Ohio to Mentor, Ohio.  Both my kids and Mrs. Toshi were worried.  If I couldn't drive back, they were all prepared to come and get me.  Well, I told them I once drove across this great country of ours in four days solo.  So this was no problem at all for me.

I once drove from L.A. California to New York in Times Square.  Then again I was seventeen and really stupid.  The only difference now was that I'm fifty.  But still stupid!  LOL!  Luckily, I felt great and was able to drive back.  Why did I go to Mentor, Ohio?  For one thing and one thing only.  That was to visit Hobbytown USA!  I went over several kits and thought of getting everything.

Interestingly, this kit caught my eye!  It was well neglected and stashed under all of the other kits but still covered in its factory seal.  A 1/144, something I would never even considered at first glance.  Especially at 1/144.  A B-17G no doubt.  Well, so here goes myHuh? very first B-17G.  Indifferent

Great start. I have a few 144th scale jet fighters in the stash to break up the monotony of the bigger stuff

To tempestjohnny,

Thank you.  I've never thought of a 1/144 kit to break up the monotony.  That's a great idea.  Come to think of it, it definately feels that way.  Now on to the prime and paint stage.  Thanks for visiting!

Wow, thats a tiny little thing. I built an Academy He 111 last year and was surprised to see the detail. Nice little kits.

Steve

Building a kit from your stash is like cutting a head off a Hydra, two more take it's place.

You want to try a small kit?  try a wwi biplane in 1/72 scale!  Looking good so far, can't wait to see it finished

...and look for that 1/72 camel in a future thread.....

I really like the way Academy's fit and finish is.  Their details on kits are exceptional.  I enjoyed building their 1/72 aircraft.  My first armour build was a Academy M1A1 Abrams of which was very inspirational.

I'm looking forward to my next project of which is the 1/48 P-38 Lightning of which you built.  Thank you for the visit!

I've never made a bi-plane as of the present.  I made the Monogram Wright Brothers aircraft when I was 8 or 9.  I'm looking forward to your 1/72 Camel thread.  Will it be a WIP project?  I'll keep an eye out.  Good luck!

Toshi, those things are so tiny that there is not much 'in progress' to show!  I had it built in the time from when I woke up on Saturday to when my kids woke up...painting and decaling took a bit longer, but I was still able to finish it in a weekend.

I will probably post pics tomorrow  (saturday) when I can get some good light, as it is right now, I leave for work when it's dark, and don't return home until it's dark....

Holy magnifying glass Batman! Surprise

Looking good so far. Props for going so small! I'm the opposite! I always try to find the biggest kits I can, I just like them.

LOL!  Thank you Reaper420.  I too like to build large scale aircraft.  Check out my last WIP that I completed.  Trumpeter 1/32 Night Attack Harrier.  My next build after this 1/144 B-17G is a Academy 1/48 P-38 Lightning with AM goodies.

You amaze me Toshi.

Going from a 1/32 kit to a 1/144 is quite a jump and you do fine justice to both. I'd like to try doing this one because I need a quick and easy build to as you said "break the monotony". I've been working on my Wife's favorite kit the PT-109 and I just can't help myself not to put many hours in improving the Revell's kit details. I usually enjoy detailing up a kit but the last few have almost been a chore.

I'm finally retired. Now time I got, money I don't.

Looking forward to your building this diminutive beastie. What you've done so far looks good. I had lots of problems when I was attaching struts (aftermarket PE) to my four SOC-3 Seagulls for my USS San Francisco (CA-38). Just masking for the clear canopy was a real challenge!

Thank you Uncle Jay Jay.  The PT-109 kit is a very cool build!  I remember putting this very kit together at 8 or 9 years old.  I thought the torpedo tubes were really cool and I still think so.

Now you've got me wanting to pick up a PT-109 kit!  LOL!  The different scale here is refreshing to do.  I would have never attempted a 1/144 if it wasn't for it being a B-17G.

Thank you for the read and reply!

Here is the next update.  I sprayed Model Master Gloss Clear Acrylic #4638 yesterday. I've also attached the landing gears and propellers.  These are minuscule at best!  LOL!

Next up, decals and then to seal everything in with Model Master Flat Acrylic #4636.

The B-17G 1/144 would look fantastic next to your 1/144 Mustang especially in your hands.  The decals are from Cartograph.  They are excellent!
