Like the man siad, the engines are kits in themselves...  Everything is molded in grey, and the sprues look great.. Nice detail, but a few things need work, like some of the recessed panel-lines.. Far too deep and wide for the scale, so they'll get filled and rescribed.. Luckily it's not that way thoughout the kit..

Has a great multi-pose pilot figure as well.. Overall, I'd give it a solid eight...

Sounds pretty nice. I must have been asleep at the wheel or something when these were around a few years back. My stash is much smaller these days. Have a couple of the elderly Airfix 1/24 kits still, though. About what you expect from 1970s moldings, but I have seen some people do great things with them. I am not one of those people....

Also, regardless of fuselage length, besides the deletion of the carb scoop up top, the lower radiator intake was a little deeper and longer than the 'E' model as well. It's only maybe 6 inches or so, but it is really noticeable on plans I have seen, though. It's almost as far forward as the back edge of the spinner on the 'F'.

Thanks, I didn't know there was that much of a difference over-all. Well as I said I only paid four bucks for the P-40E so it's not too big a deal, I'm sure I can scrape up some decals to do her as an E model. I'll save the F decals for picking up a Hobbycraft/Academy P-40F later. Just picked up the E at the show because I figured four bucks for a 1/48th scale Otaki kit was a pretty good deal.

The Aleutian Tiger is OD/NG isn't it? Tamiya's Neutral Gray is quite good. IMO their Olive Drab is very green. You could mix it with Khaki Drab to brown it. Personally my favorite Olive Drab is Gunze, FWIW...

Have to agree with Doogs, what he said sounds right to me.

I was actuall thinking of painting my plane in khaki drab, but I'm no expert in colour so I usually ask here unless I can find out for myself.

RRB: Well the instructions for my Otaki P-40 say to paint the uppersides of the USAAF plane in olive drive....

Almost as good as a FineMolds Japanese tank I did last year that called out a part as the 'jack lack' - still not sure what that is.

Anyway I managed to find a sheet with decals for two P-40Es. Didn't see them since they were with my Japanese decals as both schemes are for P-40Es captured by the Japanese Empire. Guess they would still be elegible though??? And on second thought I think if I sunlight bleach the kit decals they should be usable, only a little yellowing and no other cracking or damage. Not sure how old they are, the box simply says 'Otaki' when I remember the kits I bought back in the late '80s all said 'Arii/Otaki' so I's guessing this kit is older than that?

I suppose it's slightly prettier than just 'gross black'...

The set I have from Rising Decals has the shark mouth so if I do this fighter at least I won't have to hand paint all those teeth (awesome P-38)!

So many Group Builds so little time. Put me in for at least the 1/48 AMT P-40 N in RAAF PTO garb. Maybe the Academy 1/48 P-40C in RAF desert uniform. (I refuse to put shark teeth on any airplane.)

Put me down too please. This is still a ways off...I want to try a large scale craft for this one...a 1/32 or 1/24. Model type and kit company TBD.

Okay...so it's been awhile. But...can I change mine to a 1/32 Hasegawa P-40M? It'll be getting the Grey Matter F/L nose conversion to represent a P-40F of the Free French. 

Also, policy on early starts? Got a few gap days coming up before the big B-25 arrives, but I'm having a hell of a time starting on a new kit. Figure maybe I could get some of the initial hurt out of the way with the cutting...

Scale? I've got the 1/48 Kittyhawk IV (same friggin' thing as the -N) and it looks awesome. Kinda want to get a big one, too, but I've already got that -M and a -E in epic scale.

Don't forget that I switched my build to Revell's big 1/32 P-40e

Duh! Yeah, she's the 1/48th Hasegawa P-40N kit. Looks great in the box and I've heard nothing but good about the kit.

Don't even know if I'd work on the pit. Thinking more about making the fuselage cuts necessary to mount the Merlin cowl. Need to consult the instructions but I think I can do all the cutting/test-fitting without dealing with the pit.

I always did like the look of the longer Packard Merlin engine. If only it was a Rolls-Royce Merlin engine..

Thought I would toss in a nice set of reference pictures. These are from Life Magazine and were taken at the Curtiss plant in Buffalo, New York in spring 1941. Lots of nice reference stuff although some of the pictures are reversed so you do need to know a bit of what you  are looking at. These pictures also show zinc-chromate yellow in all its bright glory!
