Canadian GB

Thank you, Jack.  According to Osprey's Hurricane Aces 1939-40 (pp. 126-27), the red stripe signified that the aircraft was assigned to the flight commander--J.A. Kent himself.

Johnny's Hurricane was one of five received by 303 Squadron on 7 September, 1940, to replace losses incurred during the unit's first week of intense fighting.

Johnny was flying V6665 when he scored his first victory on 9 September (a Bf 110C).

V6665 was lost on 27 September, while flown by Sgt. Tadeusz Andruszko, victim of some Bf 109E's over, ironically, Kent.

Final photos of the finished product.  The camouflage is all WEM's versions of Dark Earth, Dark Green and Sky.  I used thin acrylic washes from cheap craft paint sourced from Michaels around the raised panel lines. 

Decals came from Techmod, and were kind of tricky.  If they folded over on themselves, they were impossible to untangle.  They didn't work well with MicroSet, so I settled them with plain water first, then applied MicroSet.  After an hour, I used MicroSol, and pressed them down into place with a damp q-tip (or, do you say "cotton bud"?).  The decals also tended to break off little pieces after they were applied, so I had to do more touch up than usual with acrylic craft paints (which matched reasonably well).  Anyway, I lost a few in the process, including both of the black wingwalks next to the fuselage.

Flt. Lt. J.A. "Johnny" Kent flew this plane with 303 (Polish) Squadron in September, 1940.  His autobiography One of the Few makes interesting reading.

I was glad to have the opportunity to build something Canadian.  Thanks very much.

Due to the looming deadline, I don't think six weeks is enough time (for me anyways), to do justice to the Typhoon fighter I had planned.  I will replace with a Sherman Firefly, based on Tamiya's 1/48 Ic.   Tankworkshop's resin M4A4 resin set will be used to convert to the Vc type.

I've decided to also do my HMCS Huron in 1/700 from Trumpeter, too. It will be my first ship since elementary school!

My contribution to the GB is to be a Hurricane piloted by Johnny Kent, during the later stages of the Battle of Britain.

Thanks for the compliments.  The 3rd is a LAV III.  I think it was unofficially called a Kodiak (bigger than a Grizzly).

Cougar is done.  Though the pictures show areas that need some touching up.

That mark of F-86 was supposedly Sidewinder-capable, the missiles looked decent oob, so I painted them up & mounted them. Since then, going back through my limited resources I really couldn't find any RCAF machines carrying these?

Outstanding results on your planes, shivinigh and Vance.  They both look great.  Nice work!

the camera will point out mistakes. i use it all the time, usually it's a shiny spot i missed though once i didn't realize i had forgotten to weather one entire side of a KV-2 turret. the trick, like zooming in too far in photoshop, is recognizing what will be seen and what will not be seen with the naked eye. closeups of cars seem to look worse than the actual build.

Seeing all these photos up, I realized I should put up some of my progress.  It's still a working piece, no where near as finished as the others.  I'm just starting into dry brushing the engine bay, and still have a few markings to paint in.  Then onto painting the gun bays.

So, first off, a few prior to paint.

And now, the painting progress I've made thus far.

I'm not too thrilled with my shading on the port wing top roundel, but I figure with the gun bays there, it should break things up visually and maybe draw the eye away from my poor shading. 

I still have a ways to go, so I'm hoping some time in October I may be finished.  I keep having to remind myself to slow it down and do things right.

As usual.... after the pics are taken, I realized there are a few touchups to be made, the anti-glare black is running up the windscreen framing, and it's bugging me now. And the base, obviously, is far too white, I'll be doing something else with that when I have a chance. Calling it 98% finished! A "summer-quality, oob" build, but a long-overdue addition to the cabinet for sure.









And with photos taken, the fibreglass area on the nose... isn't even, but good enough in-person...

AndrewW - love that 3-colour topside camo on the Freedom Fighter, prefer it to the gray-over-gray that is often seen on them!

Well been absent for a bit but got some bench time and finally got my little CF-5 finished.

Since I've been home, I've been working at finishing construction on my Spit.  The other day, I had a small mail order arrive, and I figured since I now had a Perforated Steel Plate base, it was time to get something prepared for the aircraft when it's finished. 

I'd also figured in honor of this being a Canadian theme, I should work that in.

So, here's where my finished Spitfire will rest.

thus demonstrating why i don't do 1/700 ships anymore. might be tough to get another one in given my current GB load.

There was enough interest in the feeler thread so lets do this!

Here are the 'rules':

1 - any subject, any genre as long as its in Canadian Markings

2.  Fantasy builds are acceptable as long as you follow #1 (the CF would love some Apache's)

3.  Canadians flying with the RAF are good to go

4.  Crossovers from over GB's are fine

5.  OOB, A/M, scratchbuilding, the sky is the limit

6. Started builds are fine as long as they are less then 50%

7.  Most important, have fun and share your build

Run dates are May 1st until November 1st (6 months)  Feel free to sign up any time.

This is my first GB so please be gentle.  If I missed something I'm open to friendly reminders.

when does this end in case i need to make a decision to build something else here? i have an AVGP COUGAR LATE and a HUAKEY ARV in the ever increasing warwheel stash. completing both of them would give me 5 canadian vehicles i could use for a group entry.
