Ok, I finally got to do some work on the YT-1300 (not calling the Falcon, but I'll get to that in a second).

First off, Love the AAT's base, Steve, great job.

The X-Wing's psuedo-snap tite construction (and mulitcolored sprues) are Typical of Bandai kits, Raven, so expect more of it in down the road. Makes construction easy, No?

And finally, Senor. I am amazed at your Falcon, and though mine is 1/144th, it isn't coming anywhere near the amazing detail of yours.

Which leads me to the progress pics. I was slightly disappointed in the depth of the detail for this kit, so rather than attempting to correct it to match the movie Falcon (which would take for-e-ver), I decided to raid my spare parts box for added-on details.

First pics are from prior to Christmas, when I couldn't resist pre-painting small parts. Nothing has been glued down yet, they're just snapped together.

This kit didn't come with any fancy options (which odd for a $90 Finemolds kit), especially for the engine, so I painted it blue, then dry-brushed Black over it for the "glow". Cheap, but effective, since I'm not one to light up my kits (or one to order a bunch of extras online....sorry, no offense, Senor).

Now, looking at the 'bays' on the mandibles, I found that I couldn't stand the look of the upper stern-most two, so delved into my spares and constructed a couple new panels to cover the open holes.

This was the first test-fit:

I kind of like the antenna array mounted on the port side, giving the ship more of a balanced look (with the cockpit mounted). I wasn't sure what more to add to the starboard side beyond the green filler plug.

And that's where it sat until today.

I assembled the cockpit, added a pilot (from a 1/100th scale Bandai Gundam kit), who needed half his helmet cut off, plus his feet to fit under the canopy, glued on my add-ons, and painted a first coat around the open panels, in preparation to glue them in.

my camera refuses to zoom in any further than that. I hope that's clear enough for you to see (it doesn't look that great on my monitor...sorry).

OK, so only that last one turned out. Oh, well, they're in-progess pics, so as long as you all get the basic idea, right? I'll take plenty more as I get more done on this.

I painted the hull with Metallic Grey, XF-56, which came out really dark, but it's just a base coat for future weathering and wear, so I'm ok with it. At this stage, it's hard to tell where I'm going with this, so I'll try my best to describe what's in my head. [I started painting it before I though to add my greebles to it, my bad.]

The cockpit armature will be the same Metallic Grey over all, once I get enough of a break in the weather to go outside and spray the canopies.

The upper hull will be Metallic Grey on the sides, between my nearly straight edges on the bow and stern (looks like butterfly wings.. I just noticed that...). The forward mandibles, upper bow-blocky-thing between them, and the rear engine deck will be the same color (though I am honestly not sure what color to do right now. Red is just too overdone, and grey is kind of an obvious choice....Suggestions?_)

The lower hull will be primarily Metallic Grey, with only the front tips of the mandibles, panels around the forward pair of landing legs, panels behind the midline sections (the half-hexagon sections), and a panel in the aft center section being the same, heretofore unknown color. (Again, Suggestions would be welcomed...though grey does take weathering really well...hmm...).

That's about all I've got to share with you. Sorry about the poor quality of the pictures, my camera isn't always honest about the appearance of my pictures.

Keep up the great work, everyone.

A nice start there Klik. Surprised to hear about the lack of detail in this kit. Even in 144 I would have expected more from FM.

Yeah, it was a little disappointing, Bish.

Those pics were so bad, then, when i got done posting them, I sat down and took some better ones, then painted some more.

Better detail pics:

First off, I forgot to post the Greeble-bits I collected back when I first cracked the box lid.

Ok, now for some Real pics of the kit:

Close up of the cockpit, with the pilot in it:

You can also see, to the right of the cockpit, the antenna I added to the now-sealed maintenance port. Santa was nice to me, and gave me a double kit (Dragon's 1/700th USS Cole vs. Soviet Typhoon) that, when finished, yielded a treasure trove of extra parts (an entire sprue from which I only needed 8 parts, with unused parts including missile tubes, small guns, radar arrays, and antennas), some of which I used on this ship.

Better overall view:

Close-ups of each of my add-ons:

The antenna array I built out of spares, placed in the hole where it will be attached when painting is finished:

With all those pics taken, I felt I couldn't just leave the paint scheme to the imagination, and since the glue had all but dried, I finished the coat of Metallic Grey.

I just snapped the top and bottom together, then snapped the cockpit arm on to give you a general impression of the layout. I still can't decide on a color to complement the Metallic Grey.

Sorry about the lengthy double-post, but I only have the weekends to work on this guy, if I'm not too exhausted, and I couldn't leave all this to next weekend.

My hope is to make this slightly disappointing kit worthy of being in the Star Wars universe.

Comments, Criticisms, and Suggestions requested.

Nice use of the spares box Kilk. Its hard to comment any further. It looks pretty good to me and of course accuracy isn't an issue.

Judging by the Tamiya paints, its a fair size for a 144 kit.

Really great work, Klik. No offense taken. I went a little overboard with the extras cause I don't know when to quit. I really like the 1/144 version. Seen some great videos online from people doing nice paint jobs. Also love the engine grill you did. Looks indeed like its glowing.

Senor- The falcon is coming along great. Are you seeing the light at the end of the tunnel yet or is there still alot to do?

Klik - It's a nice start on your YT-1400 (since we are not calling it the falcon,LOL)

Raven - I've been reading on the SSM forum about the Bandai releases, alot of praise for the kits. One thing that I heard is that the color inserts for the nose can leave a seam where one should not be, so watch out for that. Not sure why they used color inserts, it looks like they provide the decals for that.

What I'm looking forward to is the 1/48 AT-ST they are coming out with. It's supposed to have an interior and two Imperial drivers and, get this, Chewbacca. Looking forward to what Bandai offers, would love a blockade runner.

Hey Nuc. Yes, getting close to the end. I love painting so I've finally gotten to my favorite part. And the death star panel base is coming along as well.

I saw mention of an AS-ST. I have the MPC kit, but a new one of those is defiantly called for.

Bish, there are so many kits that are needed. I hope Bandai will get to them. I like the Fine Molds kits, but the company was really slow in bringing out new kits. I'm really interested in the AT-ST, other kits that would be great:

1. A Blockade runner

2. A-wing ,

3. B-wing

4. Nebulon  frigate

oh the list goes on and on.

For a while I did wonder if FM were still in business. I could never find a website and it seemed to have been ages since they released a new kit, that was until the Darth Vader TIE kit was brought out.

A plastic TIE bomber would be nice as well.

Thanks

Fine Molds is still in business, they just lost their license for Star Wars. They still have a line of armor and other stuff, I believe. Mostly on the asian side of the world though.

That's god news Doug, I don't think you have to much to worry about.

Nuc, ye, I have seen some of their aircraft kits, but never got one. But I do wonder how much this will hit them.

Hi everyone,

Would you like to be the first to own one

www.ebay.com/.../111589062504

Looks like a nice garage kit, but I'm sure when the movie comes out we will be able to find plenty of these in plastic at a better price, but if you want to have it first here is your chance.

That is pretty cool.  Out of personal curiosity, are garage kits like that legal for sale?  Not that it matters, I am just curious.

Also, sorry I have been too busy to get started but I have been checking on everyone's progress and all the work so far is impressive.  I'll do some catching up this month for certain.

Usually garage kits get around licensing issues by calling the model something else, like x-type space fighter. I did get a kit of Boba Fett once that was called Boba Feet, thought that was funny. However this guy is calling it what it is, so I guess we will see.

Will agree with you on everyone's progress they are doing a great job. I will hopefully get started on my project this weekend. We are supposed to have mid 70s temp, perfect for working in the garage. However I do have some fence repairs to attend to also. House work takes priority.

Some more of the X-Wing:

Painting the pilot (Luke?Yeah...probably Wink)

Getting there. Some options with this kit, such as a glass or plastic-framed canopy and different nose cones. The red fuselage panels are colored styrene, they look good enough that I didn't feel any need to paint over them.

Never having built one of these will be a treat I hope...The basic power uniot ( I think).

Now to clean it up and paint...

Lots and Lots of flash and pin marks to clean up but that's part of it...

More later... Doug

Nice star Doug. One thing to watch with this kit is the stand. Its like a ball and socket joint and the top of the stand is rather thin and breaks easily. I have lost count of the number of times I have had to repair mine. Getting the rider to sit right can be a bit tricky as well.

Thanks Bish... I was looking at that earlier, and I may have to go a different route. Not a fault, but there are a number of delicate looking parts in there that might not take well to a fall, and your warning would be well heeded!

Thanks...

Ye, there are. Mine is missing a couple of small parts, thought I have had it 15 years or more and it has gone through a few moves. Its looking the worse for wear but I keep I because its one of the few of my old builds to survive. But I have got 2 more that I plan on doing on bases and maybe using clear rod to support them.

Very true Bish, my wife accidentally knocked it off the shelf and the stand broke to the point that i haven't been able to fix it yet.  It must have broken at just the right spot because the speeder bike keeps drooping down.

Thanks guys. I painted his goggles Tamiya smoke, then belatedly remembered that they were yellow in the movie. Methinks I'm overdue for a rewatch.
