Do not know where he was from. I am having a hard time finding anything on him.

Lt. Victor Schmidt

507th 463rd P-47N-2-RE Thunderbolt "Chautauqua"

This is about all that I have found so far. I tried to get a couple of photos to post but I could not get them to upload to Photobucket.

Doug

I see the problems trying to find anything on Lt Schmidt. I did find a list U. S. Army Register of officers reserve corps. It does list him being from New York Look at the yellow highlight.

Bish and anyone else interested heres a slightly more indepth look at how i achieve my leather and cloth effects:

You guys mostly know the basics i would think so i start with after you have your base color etc.

Above i have done my base coat by hand and it's a bit spotty but that's alright. the following stages will cover that (also note the larger the piece the harder it's going to be to get the effect and the longer it will take)

Here i have added a heavy wash to the piece in a darker brown than the base, like a regular wash this will tint things in the valleys darker while toning down the highlights. Mixture is really how you wanna make it.

here it is dried:

In between washes i like to use a thinned out light color (sand in this case) to highlight the high points similar to dry brushing but with the paint thinned and wet as it were. then i use a little ore water and went blend the parts so they transition (sadly i forgot to take a photo of this process)

once that is dry i do another even darker wash and :

As i said its harder on larger flat surfaces but here's a pic of my Steyr i am working on :

Drybrushing is next once you have the colors where you want them but go minor otheriwse it looks cheap imho.

(PS i know the GMC top is canvas i didn't have any kahki avail. I will fix it :D

If you have any questions comments please feel free and i hope it helps someone :D

Nicely done Dave. I will try that when I can get some washes or get some mixed up. On the khaki what kind of wash would you use? Or color I guess Is what I was trying to say.

Thanks TigerEP1, when it came time to paint my US cargo truck I didn't really have a way to hold the model and air brush it.  Then on my Opel Blitz, I came up with a holder that attaches over the wheel stubs.  It made painting much easyier.

Hey all this is just for fun. My wife likes Bi-Planes so she picked this one out. I have never done one so I really enjoyed doing this kit.

Dave, thanks for the tut. I will give that a try. What do you use for the wash, i normally use oils and will give that a try, but just wondering what you use.

When i am dry brushing with Acrylics, i usually do them with a bit of thinner other wise they dry out real quick.

Nomad, I'll get the roster updated soon. The new format here is noconducive to keeping up with threads in a timely manner. Way too much time is wasted navigating the revamped site...

Ok Nomad, your Zero has been added to the front page roster. I'm not sure one would be likely to see an overall gray Zero in 1945, but most anything is possible...

Thanks guys :D

Nomad, for kahki i would use a mixed darker version like add brown or green to it for the darker parts and then lighten it with off white or sand for the highlights.

Bish i currently only use acrylics (tamiya , craft, polly scale and model master) oils are great for engines etc but might leave too much of a sheen , though with leather than isn't a bad thing, lemme know how it turns out!

Dan ,

that holder is genious! I will have to fashion something like it , thanks!

Doug: Great job on the Zero. It is very nicely done. I hear ya about vacuform canopies. The couple that I've used look like they were cut out by a blind surgeon during am epileptic seizure. lol. That's also a sweet looking Stearman. I especially like how your prop came out. Very realistic.

Dan: Man, the Sherman is even looking better. Nice work. Those figures will do it a treat for sure. I too am quite impressed with your jig that you fashioned. Very ingenious.

Dave: Wow! Thanks for giving a run down on your process. That really produces some excellent results. I may have to give that a try on some of my aircraft seat cushions.

Thanks all for the complements on the Stearman. Joe the prop was a decal that came with the kit.

Stickpusher:

Thanks for adding me.

I just used the colors I have on hand. Like I said it was a quick build. I have no money right now to order more paints like I would love to do. Maybe after Septmember I can get back to restocking my paints and get some new ones.

Dave:

Thank you for breaking down your steps. I will copy that and save it for future use.

Stearman is very sweet. That's a kit I've been considering for a couple of years. Good history and massive funk appeal. (Probably should do my WNW Pfalz III first I suppose.) Eric

Thank you for the great comment on the Stearman. It is a good kit. Theires are made with .008 guitar string. Easy to do. If I do another Bi-Plane I will do the cables a little different. I will attach them with just the bottom wing on and then I can get them cut to the right lengeth.

Like I said my wife really likes Bi-Planes and she has her eye on another one. As soon as I can get the money I will get it for her.

Stik, No joke about the site. Why is it that in the Internet world (at least for the past few years) every change to a perfectly decent site is a step backward? Netflix has become almost bizarre. And security concerns - that bother users like me not a wit - have made Mozilla dicey since they put Flash in Cyber-Gitmo. Or the wizards in Microsoft a couple of years back trying to find the best way to confuse their still massive user base - "I've got it: eliminate core features known by hundreds of million users and turn powerful computers into smart phones - we'll call it Windows 8." My brother has a new Accura crossover and the tech stuff is so bewildering that he has a hard time turning on the radio. Maybe I'm just "progress impaired." Eric Eric

If you do get another Biplane, WingNut Wings offerings are beyond outstanding. And their earlier offerings like the Albatros V, Sopwith Pup, Fokker VII and the Pfalz have reasonably low part counts and amazing fit. Their fighters are only about $10 more than a 1/32 Roden and come with instructions and paint schemes that are incredible. Think Tamiya or Tasca at their absolute best. (The huge multi-engined offerings push $200 and would try the skills of the best modellers. But good bipe makers live in their own little world of outrageously great modelling and would think nothing of it.) If nothing else a bipe has more crowd appeal than any type of model with the possible exception of a really well done ship. Talking myself into a Great War plane, tank, ship cycle. Eric

made a little progress and a small step backawards myself today...

The accessory kit came with a rolled up ope top config and a set of doors if i wanted to use the closed top. I haven't fully decided yet.

I then decided to try and drill out the cooling holes on the M2 and well, fubard that which saddend me as i used to be really good at stuff like this, i was using a pin drill so next time im gonna try a dremel (im really good with them...lol) So the hunt for a replacement M2 has started with the current winner being the AFV club machine gun set at 14 bucks from sprue brothers:

Well thats handy. I am sure the other one will come in useful for something. I have some rifles from old dio's that are no more and i have kept them in case i need a rifle sticking out from under a tarp or hidden in some dark corner.
