If you do get another Biplane, WingNut Wings offerings are beyond outstanding. And their earlier offerings like the Albatros V, Sopwith Pup, Fokker VII and the Pfalz have reasonably low part counts and amazing fit. Their fighters are only about $10 more than a 1/32 Roden and come with instructions and paint schemes that are incredible. Think Tamiya or Tasca at their absolute best. (The huge multi-engined offerings push $200 and would try the skills of the best modellers. But good bipe makers live in their own little world of outrageously great modelling and would think nothing of it.) If nothing else a bipe has more crowd appeal than any type of model with the possible exception of a really well done ship. Talking myself into a Great War plane, tank, ship cycle. Eric

Thank you Eric,

I will check WingNuts out.

Dave: Boy, You're just cruising right along there. And doing one fine job along the way. Very nice work on the 50 cal. and especially excellent effect on the muffler. Are you using the same technique on the muffler as you do on your seats and canvas?

Ken: Sweet start on the figures. Nice paint work indeed.

Despite the lack of show & tell from my bench, I am making progress. I have finished the seat and instrument panel. I'll get pics of those here right soon. Just painting details on the floor and sidewalls now.

Thanks Joe! it's similar but much more simplified. base coat then speckle with some orange and a wash of brown. I still have to weather the truck so it will get more attention then :D (i used the same effect on my willy's MB)

Dave: Oh yeah! She is shaping up beautifully. Can't wait for the weathering treatment.

Now for some update pics from my P-47.

The Utracast seat with molded in harness. I just love these and I get one for each build if available.

And now the instrument panel. The backside of the panel is visible in the P-47 so I added some wiring to the back for effect. Also, the gun sight lens had a nasty seam down the middle that required sanding and polishing.

Thanks for having a look guys.

The tuck is looking great Dave.

Joe, really, a moldedin harness. I looked at the pic before reading and was expecting a fabric one. That looks amazing, and great looking IP as well.

Tiger, your Deuce is really starting to look the part... Almost ready for a cargo load and driver!

Joe, those Ultracast seats are fabulous, aren't they? I have had great luck with theirs and ones from True Details. Both really boost a kit.

Thanks all, means a lot and no getting jealous ;)

Joe that seat and panel, the detail painting is amazing, I remember being able to do that (not as well...lol) wiring looks great.

The truck and my steyr are helping me ease back into modeling so I won't pull out all the stops on them...lol

Hey there, Joe.  It is time that I pop in on what your are up to. Your seat looks cool and I love what you did with the belts. They look like fabric!  Then what you did with the IP is excellent. Way to go cleaning up the seam on the sight and I really like what you did behind the IP.  That is a very nice touch!  It makes a huge difference.  Good work buddy!

Thank You very much Bish, Dave & Stik. Those are high praises indeed. Yeah, I'm pretty much sold on the molded in harness stuff. With just some simple painting and washing techniques you can really bring some realism to them. Couldn't agree more Stik, Ultracast and True Details really turn out some great stuff. Solid detail and usually good fit. I've kind of shied away from Aires and Verlinden because of the seemingly inordinate amount of work it takes to get them to fit your model. I do want to give some of the CMK stuff a try though.

Steve: Thank You so much for popping in and having a peek. Always great to hear from you and thanks for the positive reinforcment.

So far i have only tried True Details wheels, though i do have a couple of their cockpits to use. I don't think Ultracast are available in the UK. I know what you mean about Aires, they can be a lot of work, and Verlinden I would only get if desperate now. I would very much recommend the CMK stuff though, the one si have used so far have been really nice.

Joe, you may want to have a look at Quick Boost products also. Their stuff is made by Aries, but is more simple to use, as the name implies. Beautifully detailed and not too pricey.

Oh man, how could I forget Quick Boost. Indeed, they also produce some extremely nice stuff and I have used their product on a few occasions also and have been quite pleased. Thaanks for the reminder Stik. Wow, this ole memory thing does fail me more often as time passes.

So, tell me, do I come here often?:)

Very good truck. I've only built a couple of soft skins but had a great time with both - lots of unique weathering and cargo possibilities. Good history too: WWII was different than WWI because zillions of trucks etc were used - at least as important as a few thousand tanks.

Going to aircraft for the rest of this GB. Back to California so I can hope to get in some more modelling. I've chosen the old Tamiya A6M2. It certainly lacks the detail of the recently introduced Tamiya A6M3 and M5 (I've got both and they look very impressive) but it has what appears to be excellent fit, a lovely shape and very good basic detail.

Although the A6M2 had its hour in the first six months of the war, Nakajima continued to make them until 1944. So I think this will serve very well as a "Special Attack" plane (Kamikaze). Any single engined plane would do but Zeros were the fastest and had very good range and were the preferred mount. By late war IJ aircraft, unless very new, were getting very worn as ground services declined. So I'm thinking of a very weathered rendition - as many techniques I'm going to use are new to me, that's another reason to use the old kit. Anyway, think of something like this:

On all matters of color I'll be using the recommendations from the "Aviation of Japan" site which is moderated by the very civil and extremely expert aviation author Nick Millman. All the colors used will require some mixing. The green used on the cockpit is a kind of green chromium / yellow mixture that comes across pretty well below. Note that the cockpit doesn't match today's in detail, but must have looked very good in the early 70s:

More coming. If time allows I'll try to get a Revell/Hasegawa Spitfire XVI and maybe the very good Tamiya IL2 into the mix.

Eric

Dave: Excellent work on the emblems. They look great.

Eric: I am thrilled to see you building the Tamiya A6M2. That very kit holds a special place in my heart and my display case as it was the first kit I built when I returned to building after a 30 year hiatus. I built it in 2009 and I had scored it at Hobby Lobby for just a few bucks. For me, it was the perfect kit for getting my feet back under me and for trying out some of the techniques that had come to the forefront in those 30 yrs. I feel that although it is an older kit, it still holds it's own for fit and detail. I really enjoyed building it and it launched me back into my passion and joy for building models. Although it turned out fairly nice I had my "rookie" issues. Here's a pic of my finished efforts:

The blue fuselage band decal is not quite straight, but for first time back it was OK. I used Tamiya paints throughout and weathered with pastels and Tamiya Weathering kits. The fun part was researching the colors. Even though I was used to seeing the A6M2 in an overall light gray, I came to find out that Tamiya's own caramel/green was actually more correct. Took me awhile to get used to that. I'm looking forward to your efforts on this kit.

Bish & TigerEP1: I used pop-sickle sticks and styrene, to make the model holder. Held together with hot glue, used a pin vice to drill out the holes for the tire hub mounts.

TigerEP1: Nice progress on the cargo truck, would be nice if one of the add on packs would include a cover bed.

Thanks Joe Rix. & a excellent job on your Zero.

Great looking figures there Greentracker98.

The Hetzer is fully assembly, the Sherman is getting closer.  Remaning work is mostly the turret.

Would like to enter in my Italeri 1/48 P-51D/K Pacific Aces.  This will be my first Pacific theather model.

I have began weathering the frame (in this case rusting) and I am very rusty (pun intended) at weathering but i hope this is looking alright. I did what i did for the exhaust but sproadically and where i think moisture/ damage etc would be, then i ran a wash of forest green over it to tone it down (more like a glaze as it were) and here is where we are at.

Opinions / critiques etc most welcome !

Personally I think the rust is too much... except perhaps on the exhaust. An in service operational vehicle will be dirty, grimy, muddy, dusty, etc. but not very rusty. The US paint jobs were pretty durable, and the only time you will see a Duece looking like a rust bucket like that is after months of sitting derelict.
