The 2015 /16 Red Hot and Rollin Automotive Group Build--Ended
Posted by mustang1989 on Friday, December 19, 2014 7:57 AM

Ok folks it looks like there’s been enough interest to continue the “Official Group Build” out of this so welcome to the 2015/ 2016 “Red Hot and Rollin’ “ Automotive Group Build.  For those of you who know me, I usually stick to aircraft subjects but have recently been bitten by the automotive bug. So I figured , why not run an automotive GB for a change? No co-hosts. I'm finished with that. It'll just be me running it so lets have another good year of awesome building here.

The guidelines are:

  • It will run from 1 Jan 2016 until 2 Jan 2017.

You can enter models in any stage of completion, as long as they are around the 50% completed stage.

Crossovers are welcome to join.

Any scale, anything automotive but no military vehicles here please. Only street type cars and trucks.

Aftermarket items are allowed. The sky is the limit!

Please share progress and pictures as you build.

No bleeding allowed! lol

You can enter at any time within the one year group build time frame

And finally as my usual final rule/ guideline: Be social, encouraging and have fun!

Hey Mustang, Can I get in with an AMT 1925 Ford Model T Roadster?. It's one of those 4'n1 kits: stock Roadster, hot rod Roadster, Stock 'truck' and hod rod truck. I too am a aircraft builder, but, I need a diversion, so, I have a love for antique cars, so, this one'll be my build for this GB.

Glad we got things set up correctly, thanks Tim!

Here's my planned build, hopefully I'll be adding another later in the year:

Looks like I'll be doing it in red...unless my daughter changes her mind! Wink

Hey, as I'm doing the old Lizzy, those hot rod tires (couldn't say the size)  would prob get tossed...want 'em?

Quick question - two-wheelers allowed - or just foer? Playing around with a couple of ideas of what to use. One will be the 09 Yamaha MotoGP bike with Rossi figure and another at this stage is the 12th scale F2002 (Ferrari, F1) with detail set, but that might take me (if it's a good building year...) the entire year!

Are some other options also. Just finished up a very disappointed one, so I'm in a bit of a tussle as it is....

I'd be interested in the Hot Rod engine. I've got an AMT 57 Chevy that has a big hole running through it for the axle that needs to be replaced. PM me if you want to let it go. :)

Thanks.

I used to have a bin filled with spare kit tires of all sizes, rims, and other spare parts. Now I regretted I ditched them now.

Definitely, it would just get relegated to the parts box anyway. PM me with an addy.

Mustang,

Is it to early to start posting WIP photos? I did some work on the 37 Ford that I'm going to post in the 2014 GB, but since I'll be finishing it up in this GB I thought I might post them here also if it's ok.

Eric

OK guys, I have my group build project(s) lined up and this will be my list.  My post might be a little long winded but I feel I should point out the intent of these builds I hope to complete.  My whole project is the evolution of the Super Modified, at least the way the evolution went in the area I grew up in.  The terms I use to describe some of these cars may mean something different to some of you in different parts of the country but this is what we called them and how they became what they were.  If you are not old enough or never got a chance to see these wonderful machines race first hand, it will be hard to convey to you just what the era was like.  I have many times thought it took a man with stones the size of a Bowling Ball  and an IQ somewhere under 100 to drive these things but we all looked up to them like they were Superman.  I saw lots of racing when I was young and nothing ever got my attention and shook me as hard as this form of racing.  I hope you guys enjoy this ask any questions as we go along.

I will start with a 1927 Model T dirt racer that would have been in competition just before and maybe very shortly after WWII.  I will use an AMT 29 Model A I picked up as a flea market find for a couple of bucks, tear it down and start over.  I will use a Revell Model A engine with the Riley over-head valve conversion and lots of parts bin parts.

Here is a pic to give you an idea of the look I will be going for

Next up will be the Track Roadster or Hot Rod Racer.  I will use a Flinstone 27 T roadster body and nose with lots of scratch built parts and hope to finish with something along the lines of one of these in the photos.

I will build my final Super Modified using the old Monogram Edmunds Super as a base.  The kit is an old started kit I picked up off Evilpay for around five dollars and will make lots of modifications to make it a little more accurate.  I won't copy the Don Edmunds car but will come up with something like what I saw race around the midwest.

Last I will build up the Revell Offy Midget Racer out of the box.  These cars always got my attention also and lots of the Super Modified Drivers I watched would at times climb into one of these for a special show.

With some luck and if the Corn grows well this year, I should be able to complete this project before this GB ends.  I understand that this subject matter may not be "Your Cup of Tea" for some of you but you might find some of it enjoyable.  The tools are clean, the bench is cleared off and I am just waiting for the go date.

Nothing ever fits……..and when it does, its the wrong scale.

mustang, if you mean the Offy Midget kit, its a new one Revell popped out in 2010.  There are two versions ----the Offy powered car and a Flathead V8 60.  The kits are really nice and the only thing I can say negative about them is the box says "Made in China".  I do have a stack of around 6 stashed away to play with at a later date.  The other two kits have been around  since 1963 and 67.  Since I build old junk, I might as well use old junk!    Hope I can work with a fresh NEW kit when I get to the Midget.

Double M, the only 40's-50's 4X4 stuff I can think of is the old MPC WWII Jeep or the Hogans Heros Jeep which is the same thing.  There is the later Jeep stuff and the Jeepsters and Commandos also.  I have seen modelers do conversions in the past with those items.  I am not sure how well they would lend themselves to a 49 merc.  I also see lots of 4X4 parts from the MPC Dodge pickup on Evilpay a lot that might work or even the AMT Blazer.   Good luck with that project.

And yes, you can still get in on this GB, I am sure the guys well be glad to have you along!

MRME-There is also that Jeep kit I keep seeing.  I googled it - Revell 1/25 '03 Jeep Rubicon.  Not sure if that wheel base would work but you might be able to modify some of the components.  It's not 40s-50s but that basic design hasn't changed much fromthat first 40s design.

And for photo reference, the kit I working on:

I too have begun work the kit. I had 2 days off, my first in a month so I had to take advantage.  Sorry I'm breaking the rules but I couldn't waste my limited opportunities.  I'll wait for Jan 1 before posting wip.

Hey MRME - not too late at all, in fact the show hasn't officially started yet. Just post the kit info and Mustang will get you added to the build list.

Wow.  A beauty in Cuba is a rarity.  Some amazing finds down there-not often beauties.  I'd love to do a four door, I love me the boats.  The four doors in all makes have made a huge come back in the car show scene.  The coupes are too hard to find anymore.  I like the new trend.

I plan to do all 3 tri-five cars at some point, maybe painted the same like a theme. 55 has always been my favorite.  Han Solo drove and flipped one in American Graffiti!
